I've taken quite a break from reading WWII historical fiction - but I enjoyed this unique story that takes place on Guernsey. I knew a little bit about the island due to a different book and movie adaptation - but this was a unique take on it, with a focus on the police force and how they had to acclimate to the German occupation, along with a touch of romance.

Overall, this was a slower-paced novel - definitely focused in more on our main character, a Guernsey cop, rather than the overall plot. However, with any war-centric. novel, there is obviously tons of tension, danger, and characters to rally against.

Overall, I did enjoy this book, but I don't know if I would be running to grab something else from the author.

This was a heart wrenching WWII love story. Not just a love story, but a story of sacrifice and difficult decisions. Jack must choose between protecting his love, Johanna, or his own family. In an ever changing world, Jack’s choices as a policeman have everlasting effects and it was hard as a reader to know what the right decisions were. Impossible circumstances. The author did a wonderful job helping readers connect to the characters in a way that you just hope they’ll all be ok, knowing they most likely won’t.

I love a good historical fiction book, so I've read a bunch. This one was fine, but not amazing. Jack is a great main character doing his best to be a policeman during the war on the island of Guernsey. The author does a nice job of sharing his internal struggles with following the rules and also wanting to help people. This whole book felt a little on the surface and that it never got too deep into what was happening. As a reader, the fear of living during that time was not relayed well and the love between him and Johanna was also not connecting. My other complaint is that the book title is misleading, I kept waiting for Johanna to have a huge part in this book, but she didn't, she just remained a secondary character with a complicated background. Overall, 3 stars.

The history of Guernsey has always fascinated me. I feel that it sometimes gets overlooked. This was such a good and heartbreaking book to dive into and I'm so glad I did.

Thank you to the author, MJ Hollows, the publisher Harper 360, and NetGalley for providing me an ARC in exchange for my candid review.

This is the story of two star-crossed lovers who are living on Guernsey Islands during WWII when the Nazi's occupied the islands. It is the story of a local constable who continued to serve under the Nazis and a Jewish German nurse who emigrated from Germany prior to the outbreak of war.

There are a few things that I did not like about this book. First, the lead character had so little backbone and integrity that I think that he could have been described as a collaborater. His character annoyed me more and I felt little empathy for him.

Second, I believe that the author tried to include way too much in this attempt. It included not only the island, but labor camps and on and on. It was a very implausible story and everyone understands that very few stories during WWII ended in Happily Ever After.

I think that the story could have been shortened and not so expansive. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/55337941-the-german-nurse?ac=1&from_search=true&qid=HERuHkQ9de&rank=1

1940 Island of Guernsey and WWII is going on. The story is told through the eyes of Jack Goodwin a Guernsey policeman. When the Nazis arrive on the Island it is Jack’s job to work with the Germans to police the Island. He has to find a way to keep the love of his life Joannah, Jewish German nurse of the list of Jews. The story was a bit slow for me and the title was misleading.

Thank you #NetGalley, #H.Q.Digital and #M.J.Hollows for the advance readers copy for my honest review.

Although I have read many books set during both world wars I found this one to to be very interesting in its own right as the setting is the Channel Islands between England and France. As such it is an area I don’t know a lot about but the flavor of the setting was very well portrayed by M J Hollows as well as the story which was truly well crafted. This one will stick with me long after I’ve moved on to other stories. I thank #netgalley and the publisher for this copy of #thegermannurse to read and review.

Thank you net had for the advance reader copy of this novel. This was a fantastic historical fiction set in WWII at the Berlin zoo. This was a very different perspective of this time period a.nd I enjoyed it. The women who kept the zoo running while all the men were pulled away are heros. So much loss. So much fear. Loves the dual time of Katharine and Bethan. Well done!

I love reading historical fiction books which occur during WWII. Based on the island of Guernsey, this story is really about relationships. Living on the island during the war, the inhabitants endure the typical difficulties that were pervasive … shortages, acts of rebellion, etc. This is an emotional read as you experience the decisions that Jack has to make to help protect his loved ones and keep them safe.

Thank you to NetGalley and HQ Digital for my advanced review copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own.

I liked Jack, Johanna, and Henrik as characters. I thought the story was slow to unfold but full of detail. So much sadness and struggle. You wanted to throw something at the Nazis and scream about their lies and cruelty to the islanders. The most action seemed to be the last fourth of the book but the story was still good.

Special thanks to Harper 360 and netgalley for an E-arc of this novel.

The book had an interesting storyline. Character development was good.

Its a WWII novel, (historical fiction). I really enjoy historical fiction, not so much historical romance and I found this to be more historical romance. If you enjoy more romance in your WWII novels, then you will probably enjoy this novel

The Nazi-occupied Isle of Guernsey is the setting for a story that ultimately revolves around making choices; in this case, Jack, a local policeman who is tasked with keeping the Guernsey islanders safe while acquiescing to the demands and decrees of the occupying force, finds himself having to decide whether to protect his grandparents or his girlfriend Johanna, the "German Nurse" of the title. Johanna has her own secrets--a Jew, she is hiding from the Nazis after her parents were killed in Germany. Every decision made has its consequences and outcomes, and ultimately, Jack must choose...

I like to read books with a different perspective on WWII. This story takes place on the island of Guernsey. The main character is not the German nurse, it is Jack, a policeman on the island. The book was not what I expected and the reading was slow.
Thank you to Netgalley and Harper Collins for allowing me to read this ARC and give an honest review.

I was first drawn to this book by the premise of WWII on the island of Guernsey and read the initial description believing that there was a central love story at the heart of it. Sadly I was mistaken. I have read countless historical fiction novels on WWII and had taken a brief break from them during the distressing events we have all endured during 2020-21, I had high hopes for this book but came away with what I wish it was and not what I loved about it.
The writing is incredibly verbose, to the point where I had a hard time getting into the book and finding any means of bond with the lead characters. I agree with other reviewers that it is very well researched, but that the number of facts put into the text seems unnecessary. I found myself wishing for more about the characters and their inner workings than getting more factoids that belonged in a work of non-fiction.

Thank you to Netgalley and Harper Collins for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. All of the opinions in the above review are of my own.

The Germany Nurse by M.J. Hollows
Not what I thought this book would be like. The German Nurse was hard to follow and not much of a page-turner. I can't give this book a 5 star rating but I would a 3. There are good areas of the storyline, just few and far. I have to say the ending was good!

This book was phenomenal! I am a huge WWII history buff and I am a nurse, so this book was MADE for me. It is very well written and MJ Hollows' story telling and character development was phenomenal. The author brings the reader in to the world of WWII Guernsey and in to the lives of the main characters. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone with WWII interests and have already recommended it to my fellow bibliophiles at work!
