A dark and gothic retelling of Cinderella? Sign me up!! This is a mixture of cinderella and the good ol faustian story. Set in the Victorian era, Ella was once taken in by the lady of house as if she were her own daughter until she died and now Ella has been stationed as a lowly maid instead. With the new position comes new horrors: work that breaks her body down, peers who hate her, and the biggest threat of the house, her once step-father/ legal guardian who has been raping the maids and firing them, and Ella realizes any day she could be next. The only comfort she has is the library and when she stumbles upon a particular book a very strange woman with black eyes appears and offers her a deal, 7 wishes for her soul. Ella agrees and thats when dead bodies start dropping with every wish she makes. One mistake after another, and with every wish a new murder results and Ella loses a piece of her soul.

I adored the premise of this story and I thought it had so much potential to be amazing. Ella is a 17 year old girl and if I am being honest, irritated me. I liked her at some parts but other times I just couldn’t understand her rationale. Ella is not careful with her wishes, and everytime she made a wish I wanted to scream at her to think carefully, to word carefully, to make better wishes. If these wishes are going to cost you your soul and a murder results, you’d think the wishes would be better thought out. She wastes her first wish on a pair of shoes. Her soul for a pair of shoes. I can’t. When Ella starts trying to do things herself, I actually really liked her. She cares for her friends, she wants to help, she tries to protect the other younger girls from the master of the house. I actually enjoyed her more ruthless nature, like yes girl. Take matters into your own hands. Her romance with Charles was fine. I just didn’t really care for it as much. I care about Ella’s relationship with the maids, Aoife and Leah, those were the people that really brought out the best in her. Overall the story has a predictable course as you read it, the ending is drawn out perfectly clear. It’s definitely an interesting take on the Cinderella story.

Wow, what a fun read! I kind of knew where it was going, but it was a fun way to get to the end and find out I was right. And, left it open ended enough to leave me to continue to ponder the ending.

This was an amazing retelling, very unique and dark. Its supposes a Cinderella retelling, but can work as an original tale,

Once upon a time Ella has a visit from her fairy godmother, but this is not a fairy, it's a demon, and can great 7 wishes to Ella, in exchange for her soul. She has a hard life, after Mrs Pembroke (her benefactor) dies, goes from being a lady to become a servant, lives in constant fear and knows that she deserves better.
When the fairy godmother offers to grant her 7 wishes, Ella doesn't hesitate to close the deal, she swears not to use the last one and to use the others properly, it. What she did not know is that each wish has a price, one higher than what she would like to pay.

She is an intelligent, ambitious and also noble woman, she not only wants a better life for herself, but also for her friends, but some of her desires can be selfish and that will cause her problems. She will create a domino effect. You can empathize with her, even knowing that she doesn't always make the right decisions, you understand her motives. She is an interesting morally gray character; she can have good intentions but can be selfish too.

This was a great book, very creepy, nice mix between gothic historicals with fantasy. Its set in the Victorian era, woman don't have power, specially woman of the low class, Ella used the resources she had (in her case wishes) to aspire to something better, although it did not always go as she expected, she took her opportunities and dreams for something better.

I have so many thoughts and feelings for this book...

1. The story in itself is FANTASTIC.

2. The characters are well developed and each character I felt like had their own personality.

3. The plot is perfectly creepy ... I was reading at night and I may or may not have flipped my light on once or twice.

BUT

THAT ENDING!

I have never felt more depressed after an ending before.... I don’t always need a happy ending, however, I was literally in shock for a few hours after.

A great book and if you don’t need a happy ending you will really enjoy this book.

Thank you to Netgalley for this arc ebook! I love a retelling, especially when it is a little dark! This book delivered on both things and was a retelling of Cinderella.
