Interesting origin story for the beloved Selina Kyle. The gritty artwork screamed Gotham. I appreciated the discussion of PTSD and trauma. The relationship between Batwing and Catwoman was nice - predicated on respect and understanding - despite their seemingly conflicting goals.

This book is so similar to the novelized version by SJM. I really enjoyed this graphic novel. It was dark and mysterious, exactly how I pictured it would be when I read the novel. This is a nomination for the Maverick list for Texas!

The original book was a 3 star read for me so I was hoping the graphic novel would add something to that, but it also fell pretty flat. I'm not sure exactly what it was but it just wasn't memorable.

Catwoman is one of the most important characters in Batman mythology, and this is just one of the many elements that make Selina a strong and driven character.

Compared to the novel, this graphic novel is able to stand on it's own. The story adapted well to the new medium. however the art didn't quite live up to my expectations.

This adaptation was practically perfect. So far, these DC Icon novels have translated very well into graphic novels. I think the best thing about this adaptation is the coloring. I think making choices about what to color and when to color it was outstanding. This is such a great way to introduce younger readers to the DC Universe. Of course, they will be upset when they find out that Selena and Luke are not really a couple in the main continuity. Still, this was a blast.

The art made the story pop off the page. I'm a huge fan of Catwoman and an even bigger fan of Mass's work. Kudos

Thank you to Netgalley and DC for an arc of the Catwoman: Soulstealer graphic novel!

I read the novel version of this story two years ago and really enjoyed it (no surprise--I love anything Sarah J. Maas writes), so the story wasn't new to me, but I always love a graphic novel, and I especially love seeing how a graphic novel can bring a new light to a story.

I honestly forgot how much I love this story--I love how Selina is willing to do anything to protect her sister, and how that motivation drives her through the entire book, I love the dual perspective with Luke and the relationship that builds between them, and I love the allies Selina makes and seeing their characterization.

The graphic novel did a fantastic job of bringing this story to life. It kept all of the important storytelling elements and showcased them in a new way. Highly recommend checking this out when the book is released, whether you've read the original Soulstealer book or not!

I really enjoyed this graphic novel. I haven’t yet read the full prose novel but this definitely piqued my interest! Also love that Harley Queen and Poison Ivy were in this!

I loved the novel version of this book, but the GRAPHIC NOVEL! Absolutely took the story to a whole new level! I loved the illustration style along with the amazing story line, just *chef's kiss*. I love Selina Kyle as a our heroine, she is just phenomenal. Her journey throughout this story is so powerful as well. I would definitely recommend this graphic novel to anyone really.

Although I love Sarah J. Mass and all things super hero, I haven’t had time to read her novel of the same name. I was thrilled to read this graphic novel version and was not disappointed. I had no idea other DC characters played so prominently in the storyline nor that the League of Assassins was featured. I’m very excited to read the novel now, which has been sitting on not only my library shelf but my personal bookshelf as well. Nicely illustrated with helpful colored transitions to aide reader identify speaker/thinker.

To start: I haven’t read the Catwoman novel, but have read all of Sarah J. Maas other novels. Also, I am not a huge superhero fan. But I love graphic novels and Sarah J. Maas, so, thought I would give it a shot.

In the end, I think this adaptation had an engaging story and decent illustrations - some frames looked a little rushed. I like the color changes in dialog boxes to know whose thoughts you are hearing. Again, with my lack of superhero knowledge I had to look up characters like Harley Quinn (never heard of her). Some of the transitions between scenes seemed a little choppy and I felt like I was missing too much backstory. I would give the graphic novel a 3.5. But (now) I am more interested in reading the actual novel, which has been on our library shelf for a long time.

Thank you Netgalley and DC Entertainment for this ARC. I will be purchasing this for my library; I think my students will enjoy it. I would probably enjoy reading the actual novel more.

Thanks to NetGalley & DC for the early copy in exchange for an honest review. Disclaimer: I never read the original Soulstealer book.

Soulstealer follows Catwoman who is struggling to raise her younger sister with a plethora of hospital bills to pay off. She gets in trouble with the police but is rescued by Talia al Ghul and taken to the League of Assassins for several years of intense training. She returns to Gotham in disguise as Catwoman...but why is she back?

Soulstealer also focuses on Luke Fox who is Batwing (Bruce/Batman is out of town) and dealing with PTSD and Catwoman's rise to infamy.

I am a long-time fan of DC and was pleased to see Luke getting more of a focus since he's pretty much forgotten within the Batfamily lore for some reason. He's fleshed out very well here and I like the PTSD addition and how it is incorporated in the story. This is a very stupid nitpick but I couldn't understand why he was paired off with Selina. It's hard to take this pairing seriously since Bruce/Selina have been dating since the 50s....how do you compete with that? That said, it was well-written here, it's just my nit-pickiness not letting me really enjoy the relationship.

I especially LOVED the Gotham City Sirens (Harley, Ivy, Selina) misadventures in the book, they were my favorite parts! Their banter was great and I liked that Harley was still having trouble being 'free' of the Joker. They were all very human characters which I loved.

The artwork was fantastic and fit the story very well. I especially like how the style was 'gritty' which is befitting of Gotham. Great graphic novel and a great introduction to Gotham City and its various criminals while fleshing them all out.

This was a great adaptation of the Sarah J Maas book of the same name. I felt that this was a fresh way to re-read the story and fall in love with the characters.

The art in this was where it shone. I really loved the direction the art took, and felt it added a great deal to the overall reading experience.

Thank you for the e-arc!

Thank you NetGalley, DC Comics and Sarah J Maas for giving me the opportunity to read and review this title before publishing. I have a lot to say, beginning with: I ADORED this story.

The scene: this is an off-canon Selina Kyle/Catwoman story that essentially takes a “what if Selina Kyle was never up against Batman, but one of his protégés? And what if she trained with the league of assassins?” and let me tell you, this was a wonderful idea.

I am a Batman and Bat-family fanatic. I’ve read almost every major Batman story written at this point, and a number of Catwoman led stories as well. I’ve never seen this particular approach. It does something different with her origins and her story in Gotham while still staying very true to the roots of who she is. Sometimes creative liberties taken with “what if?” stories end up seeming like an entirely different character, and sometimes that works, but I certainly don’t always prefer it. This story takes the Selina Kyle we know and love and puts a new spin on her. Not to mention: gives her a new love-to-hate rival and love interest.
This story was thrilling and captivating, and I had no trouble finishing the entire book in a day. The team up with Poison Ivy and Harley is kick-ass and full of girl power, without getting anywhere near campy. Selina is morally grey (but I’ll always maintain that she’s closer to the lighter side,) and she cares for her own those she knows have suffered first and foremost.

The art: for the most part, I was dazzled by the art in this novel. The gala scene, at around page 100, with Selina in the red dress and dancing with Luke with the lanterns in the background: this whole scene was completely swoon worthy. I don’t always like the style of mostly black and white coloring with artistic splashes of color, and I wasn’t sure about its use here at first, but I think this is my favorite I’ve ever seen it. My ONLY qualm: particularly during fight scenes, which tend to be darker in coloring and have a lot of movement going on, the darkness of the coloring made it much more difficult to tell what was happening that I would have liked (ie. Who just kicked that person in the gut? Who did the gut kicking? Who just went flying backwards? Did someone just leave the scene? Did that guy get knocked out, or is he still up?) It is hard to confidently assert this qualm, though, as I think it may have been a consequence of the device I was reading on.

All in all, I LOVED this book. I’ve already purchased the hardcover of the regular book version of this because of how much I enjoyed it. I wholeheartedly expect to purchase a physical copy of the graphic novel when it releases. I will absolutely be recommending this to friends.

This is the graphic novel version of Maas' Catwoman: Soulstealer novel. It has been a while since I read the novel, but this version seems accurate to the original as far as I can remember. Selena Kyle fights in the underground to earn money to care for her sick sister. Then, her mother is arrested on drug charges and social services comes for them. Selena fights the police that come to take them and earns her third strike. Rather than go to prison, she is offered a place in the League of Assassins. Over the next two years, Selena uses the League to gain information about Lazarus Pits, a cure-all, so she can cure her sister's condition. She returns to Gotham after stealing money from the League and starts setting up her own Pit. Meanwhile, Luke Fox, aka Batwing, a veteran is doing his best to serve Gotham while Bruce Wayne is away. He must discover where a new villain called Catwoman will strike next and how to stop her.
