Unfortunately, I did not like the writing style, not the characters either. Characters: She - beautiful, smart, perfect, nice name, he - a joke man, the nanny - trying so hard her young body magic on him and the hell mother in law.

This fast paced thriller is about a mother- in-law that will go to great lengths to destroy her son’s marriage. Caprice hates Saffron with every fiber in her body. As Caprice plots her vendetta, Saffron has nowhere to hide. This book was amusing, entertaining and had me on the edge of my seat! Thank you NetGalley and Avon Books for my copy.

Reading Between the Wines book review #122/115 for 2021:
Rating: 4🍷 🍷 🍷 🍷
Book 🎧: The Unwelcome Guest
Author: Amanda Robson
Genre: General Fiction (Adult) | Mystery & Thrillers | Women's Fiction
RELEASED on August 19, 2021!!!

Sipping thoughts: This is the way an Amanda Robson’s book reads:
-Ooh I know what is gonna happen!...Oh crap! That is NOT what I expected.
-So I KNOW that is NOT gonna happen…Oh crap! It definitely did happen.
-Wooh okay that is finally coming to an end…Oh crap! There’s more??!!
When people say that psych thriller authors are losing their shock factor then these people must have not had a chance to read Robson’s books. While you will see some things coming, trust and believe there are many things you won’t. I also wonder if the things you see coming are meant for you to see so you are shocked with all the other twists and reveals.

Quick Synopsis: Saffron and her MIL do not get along due to Caprice being the worst MIL ever. She does anything and everything to undermine Saffron as a mother and to prove to Miles she is an unworthy wife. Diabolical craziness ensues!

Cheers and thank you to @NetGalley, @amandarobsonauthor and @AvonBooksUK for an advanced copy of @TheUnwelcomeGuest.

This is the first book I read from this author. The premise was really intriguing and I was expecting a lot of twists and unexpected revelations. unfortunately Ii didn’t enjoy it very much, although it’s well written and the has some interesting characters.

Wow, this book was actually super entertaining! I honestly had low expectations and didn’t think I would enjoy it, but I actually really did like the story. Such a fun thriller and a quick read!

Candice is Miles mother. Miles is Candice’s everything and favourite so. Miles is married to saffron and they have two beautiful boys. Candice does not like Saffron one bit - she is not good enough for her little (big) boy.

Oh my goodness, Candice is one determined lady, she attempts to break the living couple up multiple times in the most shocking and sneaky ways. This is a very fast paced book with events happening in quick procession of each other which is the authors style I’ve come to know and enjoy abs adds to the shock value of the plot. It was very enjoyable and if you enjoyed Guilt then this is another Amanda Robson book for you.

Not sure why I waited so long to read this one. But once I started I could not put it down. Very, very clever. Loved it. Thank you netgalley and publisher for this arc in exchange of an honest review.

I wanted to love this domestic thriller. But the plot was so predictable and one-dimensional. Each chapter was written addressing the person they were talking about, which I found to be an odd writing style. I was constantly wondering about who is talking about whom. Besides, this was shocking and disturbing and made me feel like I AM confronted. Because of this, I can't connect with any of the characters. It was such a turn off for me. Now I wouldn't mind the second person perspective if the narrators were limited to one or maybe two. But the multiple narrators made it extremely exhausting for me to wrap my head around. I never truly understood why Caprice hated Saffron so much. All the characters were so unlikable, far fetched and just unrealistic. I'm disappointed as I had such high hopes for this book. The premise was interesting but it just wasn't executed well enough. Now there might be readers who might give this book 5 stars. But this is just my personal opinion.

I went through The Unwelcome Guest pretty quickly, and enjoyed the ride! Amanda Robson tells a twisty tale with some crazy characters that keep you guessing. At times I couldn't believe the story went the direction it did, and that is one aspect of thrillers I most enjoy. The premise of mother in law moving in when wife already has a strained relationship with her is cringeworthy, and then to add in the nanny into the mix really creates the potential for problems!

Absolutely adore Amanda Robson's work - I have read all of her books! This one did not disappoint! One thing I love about this authors writing is how much time you spend in the characters heads - it's such an interesting way to read a book and it's one of the things I love about Amanda Robson's work - it's so completely different! Would recommend this book to everyone!

My first Amanda Robson book and I loved it. Another name that would perfectly fit this would be Mother-in-law From Hell.⁣

🖋 This book follows Saffron, her husband Miles and Miles mother, Caprice. From the beginning, Caprice has been hell bent on destroying her son:s marriage. Her views on Saffron are pure evil and hatred. She believes Saffron is a workaholic who doesn’t devote time into the family, something that she, Caprice did when her husband was alive. She was a stay at home mom and raised her kids all hy herself. Now, she wants her own daughter in law to do the same.⁣

💔 After her husband’s death, she moves in with them and the hatred becomes deeper.⁣

👌 Everything becomes easier for her when a new nanny for the 2 boys arrive. Hayley, who’s from New Zealand is desperate for a job and this seems like the perfect one. It requires taking care of the boys, and practically being treated as family as she gets to live inside the house

🍿 Soon, Grandma Caprice fills her head with stories about how Saffron hates the boys and how mean she can be to them behind everyones back. Caprice is determined more than ever to use Hayley to create suspicion and end her son’s marriage. ⁣

🔚 The ending was very surprising and shocking. I wished Caprice had another ending perhaps put away in a home but well, she was very wicked and devious. I love how everyone got what they wanted and I think there might be a book 2 focusing on Hayley and her mother in law. That would be truly amazing.⁣

Thank you very much to Netgalley, Avon books and Amanda Robson for the arc cop

The book was very surprising. I wasn't sure about it at first, however each page was getting more and more interesting.

Brilliant, utterly brilliant!

I have read an earlier book by this author so I had a look at my review and had also given that book 5 stars and said I was so pleased that Ms Robson had authored other books because I couldn’t wait to read them. I have not got round to reading any of her previous books but when this new one arrived on my Kindle I could not wait to start, and I was not disappointed.

The format of the book is the same as the other one I have read. The book jumps from character to character so you build up a picture of everyone’s feelings and views. People might find this method confusing but it adds to the story as your sympathies switch from one person to another and I found myself rooting for different characters throughout.

The obvious person to hate is Caprice, the archetypical mother-in-law from hell. She has always hated her daughter-in-law, Saffron, because she is married to her wonderful son, Miles. Nothing is good enough for Miles and despite him and Saffron being happily married with two lovely young sons, Caprice spends her time scheming to replace Saffron with a better version and obviously who is more amenable to doing what Caprice wants.

Caprice has moved from an annexe in the house to be in the house and despite all Saffron’s efforts to make her mother-in-law like her can do nothing right. Saffron is a workaholic and relies on a nanny to do most of the childcare although she is a loving and caring mother.

The story begins when Hayley a young New Zealander gets the job as the new nanny. She is beautiful and Caprice immediately starts scheming to make Miles fall in love with her. Hayley is encouraged to flirt with Miles and although he completely rebuffs her, she falls in love with him.

Caprice tries anything and everything to discredit Saffron even going as far as to bruise her grandchildren and implicate Saffron in child abuse. However, she seems to get thwarted at every turn and all her plans fail. Not surprisingly Saffron is full of hatred for her mother-in-law and spends her time imagining how her life would be if only Caprice was to die. Then suddenly she does, and we are left wondering whether it was natural or had she been killed. There are twists and turns on every page, and I really could not put the book down until I reached the end.

I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone if you have a good relationship with your mother-in-law!!

I really wanted to like this book and there were parts that I did but the characters - UGH! Amanda Robson managed to create some of the most unlikeable characters that I've read all year and that's saying a lot. Miles is a complete oblivious pansy and his mother Caprice is absolutely horrendous, the only saving grace was Saffron but she still was not tenacious enough in putting a stop to the brutal behavior her mother-in-law exhibited in HER HOME!

This book is fast-paced, but there's nothing new about this story and it feels recycled. The Monster-in-Law, Caprice is truly the devil incarnate and if I were Saffron, I really don't know that I would have had my mother in law ever living with me - this woman was evil. The house would never feel like a home with Caprice in it and I don't understand how one could live in such a chaotic and manipulative environment. Overall, I think Caprice is jealous of Saffron at the root of all the disarray but it shows up as disapproval for her son marrying a woman willing to work and note devote every waking second to being a home maker. This book was jarring and chaotic, fast paced and a tad predictable.

Thank you to Avon Books UK and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

A superb read that till the end left me in suspense trying to work what was really going on. The twist at the very end was simply so unexpected. The story was well structured to keep me wanting to read and the characters were o believable. I wonder how many other people have a mother in law from hell?having read this I now know that my mother in law was not a nice person and I know that she would have liked to destroy my marriage but Caprice certainly took the biscuit with her canniving ways.
Highly recommend his book and the author.

An enjoyable read which is written from all the main characters points of view. We have the well to do couple Saffron and Miles with their two children and Miles' mother-in-law Caprice ensconced within the same family home. The problem is that Saffron and Caprice have a love to hate relationship which makes for a rocky, and unpredictable, ride. Throw into the mix Miles' brother Aiden who fancies Saffron rather a lot and the baby-sitter Hayley who quite likes Miles and we have the ingredients for a very interesting roller coaster ride. This is an unpredictable story and, if you like plenty of drama in a story then this may well be for you. Many thanks to Netgalley and Avon Books UK for the read.

Full of intrigue and suspense with moments that gets your heart beating a little faster.

This is a well written story that's multilayered and skilfully plotted that keeps you on your toes as the narration moves between multiple points of view and covers some hard hitting themes.

I really love these types of stories and this one fulfilled all my expectations. Amanda Robson has delivered a compelling read that will blow you away.

A fantastic read. I loved the writing style of the character narrating their internal thoughts to each other. Really different but it worked. A mother in law from hell who wants Saffron gone. A new nanny and some other juicy characters. I really loved the storyline and the twists on the way.

'The Unwelcome Guest' grabbed me from the start - a beautiful rich and successful family Saffron and Miles, and their two much loved boys, are joined in their happy household by Caprice, Miles' mother. Caprice has always disliked Saffron, not thinking she's anywhere near good enough for her son and Saffron knows this, but Miles is blind to her dislike. The story develops with chapters from the view of various characters, not just Saffron and Miles, but also their new NZ nanny who is everything that Saffron isnt as far as Caprice is concerned - and also Aiden, Miles's equally rich but less attractive younger brother.
Caprice tries plot after plot to break up Miles and Saffron's marriage, and you can't help but think that her scheming ways could have achieved such great things if she'd harnessed her energies in a different direction!
A quick and entertaining read - 3.5 stars from me
