This book is beautifully written, beautifully photographed, and inspired me to bake more. There are baking books I use just for the recipes and books I use just to look at, and this book hits the sweet spot where it is good for both inspiration and day to day use. I love that there are measures AND weights in the ingredients list (now that I've bought a scale I deplore recipes which force me to convert to weights myself) and I wasn't frustrated by a long list of new ingredients to purchase. This is a wonderful addition to my cookbook collection.

This book should be another James Beard Award winner! “Baking with Dori” is an awesome addition to any baker’s cookbook and bakers book collection! Her recipes are classics with new variations of familiar recipes and several new ones! All the categories listed contain a nice collection of recipes with brilliant photographs and easy to follow instructions! Tried several of the recipes and some of my favorites so far are the Carrot Muffins, Chocolate Chip Cookies, The Daily Bread, and Oatmeal Cookies with Nuts and Chocolate! Easy for beginners and experts alike so happy baking!

This book is a treasure! It has amazing recipes, gorgeous pictures and clear explanations - what more could you need? I love the diversity of the recipes. I also love that she is teaching us how to bake using the best ingredients and the best procedures. There is a time and a place for "quick" and "easy" but sometimes I want to be taught and this cookbook fulfills that for me. I love the little blurbs she writes before each recipe. I received an ARC of this wonderful cookbook but you better believe I will be buying a physical copy as soon as I can. This is a book I will lovingly turn each page, staring at the photos, salivating at the anticipation of recreating them and happily getting smudges throughout it from all my baking attempts!!

I liked this book for the sheer simplicity of its recipes and they're recipes that I will use more than once.

This book has it all, sweet, salty, and savory and I was excited to try a few of the recipes. If you are intimidated by bread baking then you will be surprised at how the author makes it easy to try. Biscuits with Berries? OMG! Don't wait just make them because they are that good. S'mores Ice Cream Cake? To. Die. For.

This is a fantastic cookbook for those wanting to improve their baking skills or simply want to try some new recipes. I can't say enough about how easy to follow the directions are and the pictures are just amazing. Have a fun time baking your way through this book and I promise that you will be everyone's favorite person.

Solid, unfussy recipes. Lovely photographs.
Well written, easy to follow.
Love the number of savory baked goods. I love to bake but don't always want sweet things.

Highly recommend this cookbook!

I am not usually into cookery books but the yummilicious picture of the cake on the cover of this one made me stop and want to read it. Dorie Greenspan doesn't just show you how to bake, she makes you fall in love with the whole process of it. She starts each of her recipes with beautiful, soul touching tales of how she came across the dish and the memories behind it. It is extremely personal and you get the feel of being in the kitchen with her reminiscing, laughing, baking and sharing stories together. And while the recipes inspired my heart to bake, the beautifully shot pictures of the dishes was a treat to the eyes. Some day, when I have more time on my hands, I hope I'll bake her each one of her dishes, and when I do, I'll think of this book and the fond memories it gave me!

Do you love baking? You will enjoy this book!
I'm not a huge baker but I must say, like reading a book out of your normal genre, this one made it fun and doable.

Thank you for my eArc copy in exchange for an honest review.

I have been playing with Baking with Dorie: Sweet, Salty, Simple for a few months. I collect baking books and I have high expectations for Dorie Greenspan. Overall, I quite liked this book and there are four recipes in here that have become a part of my regular repertoire, which is a lot for an individual cookbook.

My very very very very favorite recipe is the first recipe in the book – “The Daily Bread: White Bread Edition.” I first made it 4 months ago, and while it is not the every day bread in the house, it is the “I’m feeling a little fancy but still utilitarian” bread and has made many appearances in my house and has been gifted to a number of neighbors. I do one thing differently – I use powdered buttermilk instead of powdered milk. I haven’t yet made the braided ring loaf with this dough, because every time I suggest it, my housemates just want to toast this bread and make sandwiches with it. Maybe I’ll make it over the Winter holidays.

My second favorite recipe is the lemon curd. I’ve used it to top muffins, make lemon bars, support the fruit in a fruit tart. My housemate and I have eaten it with a spoon out of our individual jars.

I spread that lemon curd on a slice of that bread, toasted. I whispered a little prayer to all the gods of my ancestors and a tear trickled down my face. I am only exaggerating a little bit.

The “Classic Chocolate Chip Cookies” are very good. It isn’t my favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe, but when I had my extended household vote on it, Dorie Greenspan’s cookies won. I’m sorry Sarah Keiffer. Your cookies will still be my favorite.

The Almond-Herb Crust is amazing. It’s perfect for our bumper crop of tomatoes and cucumbers – for tomato parmesean tarts, or layered with goat cheese, cucumbers and salt. The crust is also great as a cracker.

That said, the Almond Herb Crust raises my biggest complaint about Baking with Dorie. Her recipes frequently require a standing mixer or a food processor. Greenspan is hardly the only author who does this, but it bothers me every time I see it. Not everyone has a standing mixer or a food processor, and there are many reasons not to have one. I don’t have a food processor and have made the crust without it just fine. But when I was still a newbie baker, not seeing by hand instructions would have made me feel like I couldn’t attempt the recipe.

My only other complaint is that I wish the savory section had been bigger.

Next year during rhubarb season, I’m going to try the “Dark Chocolate Rhubarb Tart” and perhaps reread Molly Harper’s How to Date Your Dragon, which features a pie shop claiming to have the world’s best chocolate rhubarb pie.

Don’t look here if you are looking for a lot of gluten free or dairy free recipes. That’s not what this cookbook is about, and that’s fine.

I received this as an advance reader copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Delicious!
This book stimulates the appetite for sweets from the very first page. Even the cover looks absolutely amazing!

This is an excellent cook book for everyone. There is lots of fantastic recipes and all of them contain helpful tips from the author. There is an interesting recipe for anyone who wants to bake - for cakes, cookies, bread etc. - something for everyone.

The recipes are long and very detailed and the way the author describes it makes you want to go to the kitchen and bake something. Everything seems simple even if you don't have a lot of experience. The author describes how to do everything, step by step, and how everything should look like.
I'm going to use many of the recipes here, especially for cakes.

For those who are food nerds, Dorie Greenspan is not a new name to you. So my inner foodie has totally geeked out by being allowed to check out a copy of this book early.
My favorite recipes from this collection are the ones that are a base that you can change and play with. She even gives suggestions of flavor combinations to try if you’re wanting to shake things up. The Everything Cake and the Lemony Yogurt Muffins are quickly becoming new favorites in my house.
My husband and I are also big fans of cocktails and appetizers, especially on the weekends, and the savory tarts in this book have become a flavorful and welcome addition to our weekend snacking.
There are so many recipes, and ideas to change up the recipes, that even the pickiest eater will find something to love in this book.

The book is an excellent choice for beginners. Dorie has given proper explanation of the science behind baking and takes all measures to make anyone who follows her recipes become a pastry pro

Baking with Dorie - Sweet, Salty & Simple is just as delicious as all of Dorie Greenspan's books! The photos are drool-worthy and Dorie's advice is like having the kind support of your mom melded with a professional baker in the kitchen with you. My other Dorie cookbooks are stained and splattered—which is the best compliment, in my opinion. This one will surely end up just as battered with so many options for breakfast, dinners and desserts. Dorie's smart basics will help any level of baker and the short but interesting intros to each recipe are helpful inspiring an idea for a whole meal around it. Recipes have very helpful planning notes with timing, so you don't accidentally dive into a recipe without the time you need to complete it. I especially like the "playing around" notes from all of her cookbooks that allow the home baker to feel comfortable riffing on flavors and ingredients. I'm looking forward to diving in to Crumb-Topped Ricotta Coffee Cake, Szarlotka (a Polish apple cake/crumble/torte combo), French Riviera Lemon Tart and all of the savories...blue cheese and fig bites, tomato tarts and cheese puffers. Dorie tells stories along the way, sharing her wealth of travels across the world and the treats that inspired these recipes. #BakingwithDorie #NetGalley https://www.food-trip.org/post/baking-with-dorie-sweet-salty-simply

Dorie Greenspan, award-winning cookbook author, and kitchen genius has released another incredible cookbook, Baking with Dorie: Sweet, Salty & Simple, which, like her other cookbooks, is a “must have” for anyone who loves to bake and wants a complete cookbook collection. Not only does this wonderful cookbook contain a lot of fabulous, and often unique recipes, but it also has plenty of tips and hints on improving home baking whether the baker is a beginner or whether the baker is advanced.

The recipes include dozens of breakfast breads and pastries (muffins, biscuits, scones) – baked goods that bakers actually want to make and that can be made fairly quickly in the morning and served for breakfast and brunch. There are mouthwatering cakes, cookies, pies, tarts, quiches, and coffee cakes, as well as basics like crusts for both sweet and savory tarts, pies, and quiches; Greenspan has also included a variety of delicious recipes made with choux paste, both sweet and savory.

The recipes are printed in standard form, with instructions that are succinct and easy-to-follow. Everyone will be able to find dozens of recipes that they are excited to try and can easily create picture perfect baked goods. The book also includes beautiful photographs which make it difficult to choose what to make next.

Dorie Greenspan is a household name when it comes to bakers; she has been baking and wooing lucky tasters for decades and has actually outdone herself with this excellent cookbook. You can’t go wrong here. There is something for everyone

Dorie Greenspan is a treasure to the world. I've adored several of her cookbooks, not simply for the recipes, but for her voice. Some cookbooks exude arrogance. Dorie's books feel like an aunt taking you by the hand and casually talking you through a recipe without any strict edicts involved. Most every recipe includes variations of ingredients and/or techniques so that individual bakers can make the recipe their own.

As the title says, this cookbook is all about baking, and there's a wide spectrum involved. There are basic chocolate chip cookies and pie crust recipes, as well as those for more complex éclairs and layer cakes and pies. There's even a section of savory baking recipes that, in a suitably French-influenced way, seem to revolve around cheese. Readers of Dorie's other cookbooks will see new takes on old favorites, too, like her cheese puffs and her famous World Peace Cookies.

The two criticisms I have of the book are on a more technical level. (I did read a galley so some information such as gram amounts were incomplete, but the formatting itself is set.) First of all, I wish every recipe had a picture. The photography that is included is stunning--I wanted more! I want to know what the final versions should look like! Also, some of basic building block kinds of recipes, like the pie and tart crusts, were all the way in the back, and I wish they were actually within the relevant section for easier reference.

Overall, though, this book is a winner. I'm sure it will be a bestseller and a book that many people wear out with use.

Another fabulous and tasteful book by Dorie! Dorie continues to please the palate and all of the senses. Dorie so French in her selections and New York in her juxtaposition of them. It’s the kind of book that might leave you buying no other because you will want to spend all of your time baking your way through it. Greenspan’s wisdom and experience in the culinary industry oozes through her instruction which is patiently delivered. Grab your knock scarf, put your hair up or cut it off, add a swipe of lipstick, roll up your sleeves because you’re baking with Dorie and you should experience her brand of joy.

It's no coincidence that this book is coming out in the fall, since it's sure to make a great gift for the baker in your life. Gorgeous color photography and Greenspan's warm and approachable tone accompany recipes from basic white bread to cream puffs. Nearly every recipe has a photo (my preferred ratio), so you'll enjoy paging through for inspiration.

All I want for Christmas is a copy of this book and several bags of flour.

Just when I decided to start a cake marathon, I discovered the variety of pastry doughs.

Everything about this book is delightful and I look forward to baking my way through it.
