BAKING WITH DORIE by Dorie Greenspan

We love food at our house and Dorie is just the person to help you find a wonderfully tasty and eye-pleasing recipe to create for your family. She not only gives you a color photo of each culinary delight, but she also has handy tips and helpful hints so you can make the best recipe ever.

Highly recommend.

I am delighted to have received a complimentary copy of #bakingwithdorie from #netgalley I was under no obligation to post a review.

I am a newcomer to the ~Dorie Greenspan Culinary Universe~ and I must say that I was missing out. The recipes are so well-written, everything is painstakingly and simply explained in a tone so approachable, it's hard to imagine someone (anyone, really, a baking newbie or a seasoned veteran) not feeling encouraged to make most of the recipes. There are 150 recipes, but there are also a lot of variations in the "playing around" section of each recipe, so it's a very versatile cookbook, and, therefore, with more than those 150 recipes initially listed.
"Baking with Dorie" has to be one of the most beautiful cookbooks I've ever seen. The photography is lush, gorgeous, beautifully saturated - the colors are just perfection. Everything is just so outstandingly beautiful I just want to live inside one of the pictures. I'll reiterate: there aren't enough adjectives to describe how polished, lovely and mouth-watering the photos are. I adore it. My one criticism is that there are a lot of overhead shots and there are some recipes, like the marbled cheesecake, that I'd have loved to see the actual inside of the product, as in a side shot of the cut up slice.
Though, as I mentioned, "Baking with Dorie" is my first contact with a Dorie Greenspan cookbook, it's impossible to engage with food media nowadays without hearing about her and her recipes. Therefore, I think I can say that I believe that there are at least a few repeated recipes or variations of well-loved recipes that have appeared in previous books. That is not bad in my opinion and, to me, is beneficial, as BwD is my first foray into her books.
I'll be updating this review as I make some of the recipes, As of now, I have her recipe for Vanilla Ice Cream in the fridge just waiting to be churned (update 1: It's delicious.)
Update 2: I've just made the Breakfast-in-Rome Lemon Cake, which my dad labelled "magnificent", and my mother stated that it'd been a while since she'd had a cake this good - I had to adapt it to gluten free and it still came out of the oven perfect.
Update 3: I've now made the Rugelach and the Brown Sugar oat squares: both recipes came out wonderful. There is a certain effortlessness to both the language and the recipes themselves that make the book all the more enjoyable. 5 stars is not even enough.
Update 4: I've also made the Potato-Parm Tart and the Devil's Food Party Cake and both were amazing, and very simple and easy to make.
Thanks to netgalley, the publisher, and to the author for the limited access to the book.

Dorie Greenspan's latest cookbook, Baking with Dorie, will become a go-to baking cookbook for years to come. It is filled with beautiful images, great descriptions, and helpful photos to use as guides. My favourite section was the breakfast section. There is something about a suite of recipes to make your morning a little bit brighter. I also enjoyed seeing deserts from around the world. I can't wait to get my hands on this cookbook.

This review is based on NetGalley ARC provided in exchange for an honest, unbiased opinion.

Greenspan covers everything from scones to pastries to savory tarts, including helpful information such as weights given in both grams and ounces. Her clear instructions set up readers for success, and tips for variations on some recipes provides room for experimentation for more confident bakers. The photography is beautiful and will no doubt prompt some readers to head to the kitchen and begin baking immediately. I'm looking forward to making the brioche buns, orange spice cake, crumb-topped ricotta coffee cake, and blue cheese bites. Most of the recipes are simple yet sophisticated; the few that are more complex are well thought-out and manageable with careful planning. I appreciate that many of the recipes introduce flavor combinations from around the world, including New Zealand, Poland, and France. A great new addition from Greenspan.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an advanced copy of this in exchange for an honest review.

What a treat to be part of Dorie Greenspan's thirtieth anniversary of "cookbookery"! This is a beautiful book on baking, with many lovely pictures, and many delicious-sounding recipes.

With lovey pictures, amazing recipes, and tons of ideas to vary the recipes, this is a "must-have" cookbook. There were so many amazing recipies I couldn't decide what to make first. I particularly liked that Dorie included a chapter on savory baking and that so many of her recipes took into account that many home cooks don't have specialized equipment.

I love baking and I love finding great baking cookbooks! This is a great addition to any cookbook collection. I'm not a huge fan of digital cookbooks so this would be one to purchase when it's released. There aren't many photos either but the ones that are printed and beautiful and just makes you want to grab your apron and head to the kitchen for a day of baking. :)

This book is such a gem. The range of recipe is so wide, the instructions are clear and easy to follow, and the "playing around" bits are awesome! I also love the photos- sometimes it's difficult to visualise something, and you need to read and see the steps to follow. This book is great for home bakers!

I almost feel like by definition, anything by Dorie Greenspan will be amazing. 😀 She’s a legend in the food world, a present-day Julia Child. Is a review really necessary? (Yes.) Is it going to be anything lower than four stars? (No. <proceeds to stalk lower-starred Goodreads reviews>) In fact, this one may earn 5 stars, and absolutely deserves it.

My initial foray into blogging for a wider, not-myself audience (we’ll overlook the LiveJournal days) was as a food blogger, and Greenspan actually attended the same foodie conference I went to in my second year–IFBC, if you were curious. While I did get to meet her briefly (and she was as fantastic as I expected), I’m still kicking myself for not showing up with a bag full of cookbooks for her to sign. Perhaps one day, post-covid!

Baking with Dorie is beautifully photographed, its purchase practically justified for that alone. Can the baked goodies leap off the page and onto my plate? (While I’m at it, can they be calorie- and yeast-free? 😀 I know, I’m dreaming!) I loved simply drooling over the pictures and found them inspiring in themselves before I even examined the recipes.

A number of the “breakfast stuff” in particular contains yeast (which I don’t optimally get along with), so while I might not make these for myself, I’m confident they’d make great gifts for loved ones–and would still make my kitchen smell great, which is half the fun! I loved the how-to on biscuits and scones (two things I definitely can have), and am excited to try some new varieties and see how they compare with some of my tried-and-true favorites. Cottage cheese biscuits, in particular, sound like a great option; I often have quite a bit of cottage cheese left over from the week’s meal plan, and never know what to do with it. Problem solved!

I also love that the ingredients lists include both “regular” measurements (cups, etc., for us mortals) and metric. Said meal plans have seen me dipping my toe into metric lately, so having both is nice. The inclusion of both savory and sweet recipes also makes me super happy–something for everyone.

Section overviews and pre-instructions blurbs give insight into the “whys and wherefores” (as well as shine a light on Greenspan’s own experiences with a recipe), and instructions are clear and easy to follow (yayyy).

All in all, a gem, and one I’m looking forward to purchasing upon release (and, one day, getting it signed :D).

I received an eARC of the book from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

The book is well organized and there are a lot of interesting and unique recipes. There aren't a lot of pictures but the ones that are in the book are sharp and nice.

I have several of Dorie’s books and they never disappoint. This one is no exception! The recipes themselves are very familiar yet sophisticated. The photography is absolutely fabulous and actually shows the food (unlike some books that focus on the author). My favorite part of this book, however, is the focus on detail. Her instructions are absolute perfection and she discusses ingredients in some detail. But she also adds very helpful notes, like how to use biscuits in nonconventional ways. If you like to bake, you need to add this book to your collection.

This is such a beautiful and useful baking book! I should expect nothing less from Dorie, but I need to get this one as a print copy ASAP! So beautiful, easy to follow instructions, and a staple!

This cookbook is very beautifully done. The food photography is mouth watering. The recipes all seem well written with steps that an average chef could follow. However, I do not feel like the "simple" tag on the cover is fitting. It is certainly more gourmet than simple. I was looking for a recipe that I could make for my family (including my small children) to try and I landed on shortbread.

Now, for a dish for a holiday meal or to take to a dinner party, there are many options which I will definitely be trying. For example, I want to make the Big Banana Cake or the Buttermilk Scones. I would consider myself a seasoned baker, so nothing in any of the recipes seemed beyond my skill level, nor do I feel like they would be for most people.

I would love this cookbook in my printed collection. I think it is visually appealing and would offer some great ideas when you really want to wow people with what you bring to the table!

Dorie Greenspan is a columnist for The New York Times who, with Baking with Dorie, has written her 14th cookbook! She has the most interesting about me section on her website, and you should check it out. I am glad I did! Now for the review, this cookbook was awesome. From the beautiful photos to the easy-as-pie instructions, I found myself baking some of her creations. They all came out delicious. I can see myself purchasing a copy for my cookbook collections or as a conversation starter on my coffee table.

Baking with Dorie is scrumptious! Clearly written recipes for classic, everyday baked goods like cinnamon-raisin bread and chocolate eclairs are interspersed with more unique offerings, like iced honey-apple scones with spelt and "little marvels" (small meringue cakes with whipped cream and a layer of yummy spread, rolled in an outer coating).

This is a cookbook to thumb through for inspiration or to turn to for regular favorites. The design of the book and photographs are inviting and the text is pleasing without being chatty. I'll be buying this one, for sure!

Oh my, this is a wonderful cookbook! I admit, I was unaware of the author, Dorie Greenspan, until I received this ARC. Reading BAKING WITH DORIE: SWEET SALTY SIMPLE is a real treat. Of course, baking the recipes is a treat for more than just the reader. Greenspan’s recipes are eclectic, tasty and easy; there’s nothing unnecessary added to the instructions or ingredients. This book is a treasure and delight. I was so enamored of it that I bought an earlier cookbook because I didn’t want to wait until publication. This one is next on my purchase list. I received my copy from the publisher through NetGalley.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A rainy afternoon, a sleeping dog on my lap, a cup of milky tea - I am curled up on my favorite reading chair with a copy of “Baking with Dorie”. Perfection.

This beautiful book is jam-packed with deliciousness - you can practically smell the bread baking, scones crumbling, cakes rising and cookies crisping as you scan the recipes and linger over the beautiful full-page photos. The author covers a wide range of baking treats, with each of the recipes laid out with simplicity and many featuring interesting twists on sweet versus savory. Measurements are conveniently provided both in terms of cups (volume) and weight. On many recipes, the author also notes “playing around” options - variations to explore when the fancy for something even more original strikes.

🖋 Breakfast - Could there be a better showcase for delectable baking than breakfast? The largest chapter in this book, fully one quarter of the recipes covered deserve a starring role at your next breakfast or brunch.

Bread, brioche, scones (one of my favorites - here we have variations with yogurt, buttermilk, cottage cheese, tangerines, blueberries - you name it!) , muffins, coffee cakes, loaves, Bundt cakes, squares and quick breads.

🖋Cakes - the author treats us to everything from decadent iced layer cakes ( try double-decker salted caramel cake!) to spice cakes, marble cakes, tortes, jelly rolls and cheesecake.

🖋Cookies - chocolate chip, chocolate chunk, oatmeal, (all the usual stars are here), plus sure-to-be-new favorites like coffee shortbread, cocoa-cornmeal biscotti and olive oil brownies.

🖋Pastries - gorgeous creme-puff indulgences (including one-bit cinnamon, chocolate eclairs) and a selection of meringue based marvels (pavlova and snowballs).

🖋Pies and cobblers - a wonderful assortment of fruit pies and tarts (apple, berry, pear, pumpkin, lemon, cranberry Linder); as well as almond or maple, custard and creme, and even (one I recognized from T.Vs. Great British Baking) - a flaky, gooey and chewy British Bakewell tart.

🖋Salty sides - this section highlights mouth-watering supper-time tarts, pies and quiches including a fig and goat cheese tart that looks amazing.

🖋The author closes with a bakers-howto invaluable set of recipes for crusts, doughs, streusels, icings and toppings.

I devoured this book and believe it would be a wonderful and well-loved addition to any bakers library, regardless of their skill level.

A big thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for an advance review copy of this book. All thoughts presented are my own.

This cookbook is fantastic! The imagery is beautiful, the recipes are unique. If I had a hard copy I would be dog-earing every page. I know for a fact I will purchase this when it’s available because I wanted to try nearly every recipe within its pages! It would make a great gift for the baker or dessert lover in your life.

I love a cookbook that reads like a novel, has beautiful pictures of each recipe, and teaches you something about cooking or baking that you didn’t know before. Dorie Greenspan’s newest cookbook Baking with Dorie: Sweet, Salty & Simple does those very things! I much appreciated that Dorie gave measurements with traditional measuring cups and also with grams, which is much more accurate. I liked that many of these look like traditional recipes, but they have a surprise ingredient, flavor combination or additional ways you can “play with” the recipe. I loved that she put her “pet” recipes in this cookbook, which she calls her Sweetheart recipes. Each chapter/collection of recipes has its own table of contents, where Dorie brings your attention to her Sweetheart recipes, denoting these with a red heart in front of their names. There are so many recipes that I am looking forward to making, but I must admit that the cake collection will probably be my starting point. Now to decide between the S’mores Ice Cream Cake, the Lemon Merengue Layer Cake or the Lisbon Chocolate Cake, that graces the cover. Thank you to NetGalley and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for this digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.
