This book gives the reader insight on the Bronte sisters' motivation, family life, and struggles. It only covers a short period of time but it still contained a lot of information about their lives. It stood apart from other books about them because they included other family members like Maria, Branwell, and Patrick Bronte. This book is suitable for children, the writing level is not too complex. I wish the illustrations were colored and more sophisticated. It would have also been helpful to know what year the scenes in the book occurred so readers can match it with the timeline at the end.

This just seemed...unfinished, I guess? There wasn't much background story here before just jumping right in (what happened to the Bronte's mother, for example? Or why didn't Emily want to publish her work?), and the story ended abruptly when their brother Branwell died (seems like an odd place to end a story that's not really about him). Some of the art panels seemed extraneous, focused on scenic details, and didn't really add much to the story. And the black & white artwork and imprecise style made it difficult to discern the characters' emotions from their faces (I couldn't tell when someone was crying, or just had freckles, or had some type of facial pox-like affliction).

I love Jane Eyre so I was excited to have a book to give me a brief introduction to the lives of Charlotte and her sisters. I vaguely knew the outline of their lives but it had been awhile since I had read into them. This graphic novel was a great way to dive back into it. I will say it was a little hard to distinguish the sisters at first, I kept reading the book in spurts so when I would come back it was hard to tell between them especially with just black and white art. I did really like the art style, its very unique. It was hard a couple of times to figure out the action of the characters but I think that might be because it was a large two page spread and I was reading on a tablet and couldn't see the two pages together. I do kind of wish the timeline provided at the end was at the beginning but then it might give away some of the plot for someone who knows nothing about their lives. Overall a quick and fun read that's pretty informative.

While it's not my favourite, I'm glad to see the Brontë sisters' story getting out to a wider audience. The illustrations were interesting, and this would be a fun one to recommend to teenage girls as encouragement for pursuing their talents and dreams.

Emily, Anne, and Charlotte Brontë are three famous sisters who wrote in the 1800s. They had to look after their aging father and their alcoholic brother, while trying to make a name for themselves. The sisters ended up publishing under male pen names before revealing their identities.

The Brontës had tragic lives. They lost their two oldest sisters and their mother before they were ten years old. All of the siblings died as young adults, under the age of forty. Their brother, Branwell, was addicted to drugs and alcohol, so his sisters had to look after him as well as their father. I read a few reviews of this book and many people criticized it saying that it was so tragic and inaccurate. Some of the timelines may have been changed to fit into the story, but the Brontës did lead lives full of tragedy, which was reflected in their gothic novels.

The illustrations in this graphic novel were in black and white. The images were simply drawn without a lot of detail. I would have liked to see more detailed drawings. However, the simplicity and harsh black lines reflected the dark nature of the lives of the Brontë family.

I enjoyed this graphic novel biography of the Brontë sisters.

Thank you Graphic Universe for providing a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I have always been fascinated with the story of the Brontë sisters but have never really read anything featuring al three of them or their story. I think the art in this graphic novel was amazing and went so well with the story. I don't typically read graphic novels, but this one I can say with confidence I enjoyed.

Thank you to Netgalley for this review copy.

This Bronte graphic novel takes a lot of liberties with the actual timeline and life between the sisters. While I wasn't a big fan of the novel overall, it's a good starting point for those who are not familiar with the Bronte family, but take the situations and dialogue with a grain of salt. I did enjoy the artwork, although I'm sure not everyone will. The line drawings and very dark shading can be jarring and take a moment to take in.

Two out of five stars.

I am a huge Bronte fan. I love the classics and I love graphic novels and this was a beautiful mix of both. I feel it is a nice modern way to bring the Bronte sisters back to life. I really enjoyed the story and the illustrations are beautiful.

The topic of this book isn't normally something that I would pick up. I am not the biggest reader of classics. But I loved the fact that this was a graphic novel and really helped me picture and internalize the Bronte sisters. It was great.

I wanted to read this book because I've been wanting to add more graphic novels into my reading. The few that I've read have been good, but I'm not sure to make of this one. Since I'm so new to the genre, It's hard for me to know whether or not the language, aesthetic, or fonts were bold choices or not. To my untrained eye, it all fell a bit too much on the dark side for me.

I've always been interested in the Bronte sisters and this book provides some unique insights into their lives, especially in a time when it was incredibly hard for women to be published.

After doing more research in the history of the sisters, it does seem that this book took liberties with the facts, so it's good to keep that in mind as you're reading.

Thank you again to Netgalley for the chance to review this book!

Such a lovely graphic novel! Helped me learn a lot of things about the Brontë sisters that I didn't know, while being a really fun, quick read!
Really appreciated that it was strong on the feminism and felt really badass. I think it's a great gift for young girls that are into writing to encourage them to embrace their skills and work on them!
Plus, the art style was super pretty and created a nice, simultaneously dark and cute atmosphere to accompany the story of the siblings!
Lovely!

A huge thank you to the publisher for this review copy!

When I saw it, I quickly requested it because I own two books about Branwell Brontë and I'm very interested about learning and reading about the Brontë family before the 2021 biopic adaptation of Emily's life comes out. The autobiography of Branwell is very dense and I thought thatpicking up a graphic novel would be rafraishing.

I very much enjoyed this. I was ensure about the illustration style at moments but from one page to another, I would change my mind and found it absolutely stunning. I would gladly buy some of them as prints if it was possible. The art feels simple and intricate at the same time and I personally think that it's very powerful.
I will try to find the Jane Austen graphic novel by the same author mentionned at the end and I would absolutely recommnd anyone interested to pick Brontë up when it's out.

I received this ARC from Netgalley. Here are my thoughts:

I requested this copy for two reasons: I've been wanting to read more graphic novels and I wanted to learn more about the Bronte sisters.

From the first perspective, the artwork was different from the usual books in this genre. As I'm not well-versed with the different styles, I cannot comment if this was a good rendition. I personally found the artwork a bit weird - it didn't appeal to me somehow - the inconsistent sketches of the characters and storyline appeared shoddy - again I don't know if that's in fact a stylistic choice.

From the perspective of the actual story, there are certainly things I learned about the Bronte sisters and their early life. But I'd have liked more details and especially ones showing the depth of each character. They did come off as ill-tempered, mean and brash with one another. I'm not sure if that's how they are known to be or that's again a subjective portrayal by the author.

All in all, It's a quick read, without too much depth into the sisters lives and passable artwork.

In this graphic novel, we follow the three Brontë sisters in their pursue to publish their work in a time when women publishing books was frowned upon and financially support themselves through writing.
We also see glimpses of their personalities and their relationship with their father and brother along with fan facts about their books.

Generally speaking, this is a very easy read and I get its appeal, since it is a nice way to be introduced to the lives of those women whose works still influence us today, especially for a younger audience.

But I also had some complains. For example, the language and dialogues were quite simplistic and the characters of the three main heroines felt a little flat. Also, near the end after their brother dies, the point of view changes to him for some reason and he wraps up the whole thing pretty quick, describing how his sisters died.

Some other complains I had, were in regards to presenting the three women only as writers. Don't take this the wrong way, but I would kind of like to see other aspects of their characters other than being authors as well. I also didn't like some instances of how the women acted but I don't know if that's because of the way the author handled them or if that's based on reality.

For example, I didn't like how Charlotte and Emily described Anne as the meakest of them (and to be honest, Anne was an absolute delight in this) I found it quite deminishing.
I also found it ironic that the same sister who is known as the rebelious one, was the most, how to say this, scared one. I mean, Emily was presented lowkey anti-social and mean. I get being scared of being judged, trust me I have been there, but I don't get being mean to your sisters for writing romance, and taking inspiration from their own lives, especially to Anne who -as this graphic novel suggests- was in love with someone who got sick and died. And all that while being unwilling to speak up about her rights to publishers and hiding behind Charlotte and Anne.
Granted tho, after finishing this, I went on to read in some other sources that this iffy image of Emily we have, could very well be a product of Charlotte's bias against her, or her biographers' attempt to make her (Charlotte) seem better.
I also read that after their deaths, Charlotte would go on to 'polish' and 'hide' her sisters' works which is also a big yikes for me. My first instict is to think that Charlotte may have been a bit jealous or insecure about not being the only one with talent in the family, but whatever.

So, see, I went on to learn a couple of things after finishing this, because it made me curious to know more.

By the way, after the story wraps up, we see a few notes from the author/artist about her thought proccess while writing this, and that's nice, but she mentioned that Anne was the middle sister which is inaccurate, because she was the youngest. What's with that part?

Anyway, this wasn't a negative reading experience by any means. I just expected to see more. If you know beforehands what this book aims t0 do and treat it as only an introduction to start learning about these three women, I believe that you will enjoy it.

This graphic novel tells the story of the Brontë siblings.

As before the sisters became writers and sold their works, the family had many financial problems, compounded by the addiction of their brother Branwell.

It spans a short period of time, before Emily agrees to submit her manuscript, until shortly after their works are published.

The Brontës are classic writers of English literature and are recognized worldwide, but they had to go through great obstacles to become what they are now, such as: having to use men's names in their works or having to put up with their brother and help with the illness of his father and overcome the death of his mother and older sisters.

I have been a fan of the Brontë sisters since I was 7 and picked up a $2.00 copy of “Jane Eyre” at Walmart. I have read their works innumerable times and count some of them among my favorite books of all time. I was prepared to be absolutely obsessed with this graphic novel. Unfortunately, this was a major let down for me. While it told the biographical story of the sisters and their meandering and sad rise to mostly posthumous fame, it did so in a “quirky” way that was boring at best.

The language of the sisters constantly flitted between formal and old fashioned and modern. The conversation surrounding their early writing and the desire or lack there of, to publish read like an after school special.

Art wise this also left a lot to be desired. The “zooming” in on the action of the panels was jarring and not well done. At times it was almost impossible to make out what was happening. Not to mention the fact that you could almost never tell which sister was which unless they explicitly mentioned their names.

All in all, this was kind of a mess. This was wonderful concept and a good introduction to the early lives of the Brontë’s, but the execution left a lot to be desired.

Brontë is an incredible book , to know the stories of three historical women, to know their lives and understand their situation of being a woman with the graphic novel explaining their dreams, lives, and family also they got what they wanted. Brontë is a unique book because knowing the sisters allows me to read their books. You should definitely read. I recommend it.

To begin with, I am fan of the Bronte sister so naturally I was intrigued by the description. Santoni did a fantastic job with portraying each character and retelling of the hardships the Bronte household faced. This book resonated the works of Marjane Satrapi.

Thank you Netgalley and Graphic Universe for giving me the opportunity to read this book.

Brontë by Manuela Santoni opens up the life of the Brontë sisters and the risks they took as they strove to live on their artistic talents.

THINGS I LOVE ABOUT THE BOOK
The author does a good job of reflecting the Brontë sisters' different personalities. Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Brontë all show different traits and perspectives to their work and family. The author also reveals the emotional turmoil the sisters went through while submitting their work to an industry that is full of men while caring little for women writers.

DISLIKES
I wish the book tells us more of what happened after the sisters found success via their artistic work.

WHO IS IT FOR?
Fans of the Brontës should not expect much, especially if they are already conversant with the sisters' background. However, this is a good introduction for those not familiar with them or their work.

Many thanks to Lerner Publishing Group for review copy.
