I was intrigued by the topic because I work in human resources in a medical association in the U.S. But this book is helpful for leaders, managers, and employees in any type of organization since we all are experiencing increased conflict and toxic environments. Clive Lewis is a business psychologist and brings extensive experience and examples from his work with organizations. His book helps describe what a toxic workplace looks like (and feels like) and the impact it has on employee health, stress, and productivity. It also helps elevate the conversation and provides a variety of tools organizations and leaders within organizations can use to address toxic workplaces.

He talks about the "toxic triad" in the form of a Venn Diagram which beautifully shows that organization systems, line managers, and employees all contribute to and can mitigate a toxic environment. At the end of each chapter, he shares the top tips from the chapter broken down by Organization, Line manager, employee responsibility with actions to mitigate the toxic environment.

The only critiques I have of this book is that it covers a lot of ground (maybe too much) and I wish the chapter on diversity and inclusion (and equity) was threaded throughout as opposed to its own chapter near the end. Also, workplace mediation is not something we have used in the United States (which is too bad) so that was less relevant to me.

But I do recommend this book overall, because there are a lot of great practical tips and tools to help diagnose environments as well as how to have the conversation to address conflict. I plan to use this book to help shine a light on this topic in my organization.
