Just because Gabrielle is a friend, doesn’t mean this is an honest review.

She has such a way with words, and I feel so honored to be apart of her writing journey. This is the fourth book I’ve had the privilege of reading early, and it’s quite literally always a privilege.

The blurb of this book really drew me in. I mean could you imagine having to choose between your family and the lie you have always known and going to a new country to try and live out your dreams while your future is so uncertain? I couldn't do it, the stress alone would kill me. But Siobhan has to make these kinds of choices and this is a beautiful coming of age novel that will stay with you.

This book read young and it was because of the unlikable, unreliable lead. Which those aspects are fine. But when someone I believed was 18 acts 13, it destroys my enjoyment of the book. I was excited to read this based on the description but it was a solid miss for me.

I enjoy Gabrielle’s writing style. Very clear and easy to read. I will admit the story was a bit slow to start but once it picked up it captured my attention. A story of a girl not allowing the past to define her future.

I disliked a lot of the mc characters personality but I think Gabrielle did a great job at envoking the dislike by her excellent character build. I really felt Gabrielle understood how to write a young girl and I didn’t expect her to act out any differently.

Overall I think this is a fantastic book!!

2.5 stars

I liked the first part of this story, it was a story of a girl,Siobhan, whom mother decided to leave her family for another younger man, yes it wasn't the father this time, so our heroine in order to get some attention from her dad started to steal but she is always caught by the Irish Garda. Siobhan dreams of a new life, a new home and thanks to her talent of writing, she will get an opportunity to live her American dream but is this really what she was looking for?

I liked the first part of this book, it was going so well about writing and everything unlike the second part of the story where Siobhan's character got so worse. She is a big bother and a bore with all her insecurities and the desire to feel wanted and blah, blah, blah,in addition to all her stupid decisions about her life. I found no sense to this character and at the end I just wanted to tell her that she got what she deserved. I didn't like her and the ending was so lame. What I could not understand is Connor in all this story, why is he there?

Anyway, I was waiting for something better when I started this book, I liked the author's writing style, it is the only part that I trully enjoyed all along my reading and I hope that she will write better stories.

Before I start my review, can I please comment on how STUNNING that cover is?! I would buy that book immediately if I ever say it in a book store just because of that cover.

Now let's get to my review. Twist in the Wind by Gabrielle McMaster follows Siobhan Murphy, a troubled girl with some very sticky hands. The problem is... that I can't really describe her as something else? Siobhan definitely grows as a character throughout the book, but all in all, she showed terrible behaviour towards her whole environment and that bothered me a lot. I enjoyed the story, but I feel like I would have enjoyed it more if I didn't dislike Siobhan that much.

The writing style was good! The writing was clear and easy to read. The story had a bit of a slow start, but fortunately I did manage to get into the story! By the end, I really felt for Siobhan and I may have shed a tear or two. Gabrielle McMaster did a great job at making me sympathize for Siobhan (although that didn't make me like her more!).

There was also a particular part of the ending that I loved because it was unique and unexpected. I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll just keep it at that. ;)

Thank you GenZ Publishing House and NetGalley for providing me an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

DNF. Boring and unlikeable characters. Really couldn't bring myself to finish this, such a shame because I loved the premise.

DNF for this one. I just couldn't read it. I was not invested at all and the characters were just ugh.

Inspirational, the kind of story us kids with questionable pasts need.

'I felt free. I felt like I was finally me.' - Epilogue

"Twist in the Wind" by Gabrielle McMaster was a fantastic read, for a couple of strong reasons. For me, the strongest is that Siobhan and I are cut from the same cloth. Her mom's gone, my mom had an untimely exit, and still the world has a way of its perching itself on your shoulders. It can be hard to be a teen in that position, and McMaster did a wonderful job of finding relatively safe outlets for her adventurous young main character to explore the boundaries of the hand she was dealt.

Now, give that MC a chance to find herself - and do what she loves in the meantime - and you've got yourself a pretty good read. Watching Siobhan grow up, and experience the growing pains related with that, was a treat. Even if I did find myself cringing for a good portion of her time in LA. Siobhan's relationships with the world - and the people - around her were genuine and felt fully fleshed out by the end of the book. Her friendships with Niamh and Annie were real, and her relationship with Connor was raw and sweet. Even the relationships with her dad and his fiance, while rocky at the beginning, found a way to grow with Siobhan - much as these things do in real life.

The strongest draw to this book, to its cast of phenomenal characters, was the freedom that McMaster paints from page to page. I definitely wish I'd had a book like this around when I was a teen. This was the first book that I had read from McMaster but it will definitely not be the last.

Thank you to GenZ and McMaster for a review copy of this book. All opinions in this review are my own.

This book does well at examining grief, familial relationships, and how pain can impact us. I liked the way I could connect and relate to the characters. This book is good for many reasons, but I think it could help teens that are struggling with the loss of a parent or are having difficulty fitting in.

The concept and plot of this book had potential, but the main character was so unlikable it distracted me from the rest of the story. I kept anticipating a big change with Siobhan’s attitude and choices, but the change wasn’t substantial enough. At times, the book felt choppy and awkward due to the way some of the dialogue is written. This could be easily corrected with revisions and edits. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the e-arc. All opinions are my own.

You're allowed to write books with self-centered, unlikable leads, but when they're as juvenile and Siobhan, it makes it a lot harder to keep readers invested and I don't think there was enough good here to make up for how much I loathes Soibhan. I'm fairly sure she's supposed to be 18, but she has the emotional maturity and stability of an 11-13 year old the whole book and it really got on my nerves. You're clearly supposed to be rooting for her but I just couldn't. I'm not a fan of characters blaming all their suckiness on their life situation, so this one really didn't work for me.

This book did not work for me. It had the bones of a good story, but they were completely overshadowed by how much I disliked out main character.

She was a complete "not like other girls" character. She enjoyed stealing, and couldn't accept a compliment. It irritated the heck out of me, especially because everyone seemed to fall head over heels for her. I mightve been able to cope with this if it weren't for for way she treated other people.

This girl was the worst friend. I couldn't deal with the way she used everyone who cared for her. I'm sorry, but I can't bring myself to like a character who drops everyone who cared for her just because she was living in a different location. She was never there for any of her friends, despite them being there for her through everything. It made me so mad at the end when they all forgave her, she didn't deserve it.

I mightve enjoyed this if the main character didn't bother me so much, but it wasn't to be. This wasn't a bad book, but I didn't find it enjoyable.
