The concept of total shareholder return is explained really well in this book by Bill McNabb, Ram Charan, and Dennis Carey. It has extensive discussion on how companies invest its resources.

I was interested in reviewing this book because of previous books I have read by the authors (particularly Ram Charan's The Leadership Pipeline). While the book is intended primarily for the C-suite and Board of Directors of For-Profit organizations, I found a lot of relevance as an investor, a talent management executive in organizations, and as a board member of a not-for-profit organization.

The authors reframe TSR (total shareholder return) to focus on Talent Risk Strategy. The prime objective of the new TSR is the creation of future value. This book offers an exceptional exploration on what is important now for organizations to do well now and be future-ready. This is a very timely book given that the Business Roundtable has emphasized the need to look beyond just shareholder value and think in terms of other stakeholders (for example, customers, talent).

I found myself highlighting passages and ideas throughout the book to use as a part of how we think about talent, risk and succession planning. I also plan to use this with the non-profit board I serve on. . I highly recommend this book to leaders within organizations (for-profit in particular but also not-for-profit too) and for all of those who serve on boards.
