Danger at the Cove is the second in the Island Sisters cozy mystery series and it might be even better than the first! Dennison writes mystery with skill and propels the reader clearly to the Isles of Scilly and the charming hotel.
The mystery is slightly grittier than most cozy mysteries and for that I find it enjoyable. You could sense the real danger and dread.
My only negative is the "Hollywood" sister, Margot. She honestly gets on my nerves but I do feel like she has grown a bit since the first book so that is some progress.
I would recommend this to my readers who want a well written and charming cozy. Highly recommend!

In Danger at the Cove, we meet a cast of characters involved in the re-opening of a local hotel on an isolated island. Two sisters have taken over stewardship of the hotel and are making improvements to reopen; one sister invites an old friend with Hollywood connections to stay, in the hopes that those connections might drum up interest for the hotel. A mysterious newcomer joins them with ideas about a business endeavor involving an old shipwreck and investor funding that seems a shade off.

The whole vibe of this book was sort of a cross between Murder on the Orient Express and Murder, She Wrote. The setting and characters created by Ms. Dennison are fun and quirky. I felt so immersed in the Tregarrick Rock Hotel, and felt as though I could see the cove and sea of the Isles of Scilly.

I enjoyed the slow pace and character building of Danger at the Cove; the style and tone of the writing feels like a lazy Sunday afternoon with a cuppa and a visit with your best friend.

Thanks to Hannah Dennison and Minotaur Books for an advanced copy of this novel in exchange for my review.

Adorable little cozy mystery that will keep you entertained and intrigued until the very end. I loved trying to guess the plot in the story in the culprit and overall had a great time reading it I would highly recommend this if you’re into cozy mysteries of any sort and want a quick escape from the real world. The setting and characters of this one are so well written, you will fall in love. Also, the cover art is gorgeous and pulled me in immediately.

Margot and her sister, Evie are finishing up renovations on their hotel so they can officially open. However, when an old friend shows up early and demands a room, things don't go as planned. Two people are found dead on the hotel property and the sisters begin to wonder what will happen with their hotel.

This cozy mystery has a great plot with wonderful characters that had me wanting to read more. The characters were very relatable with their flaws. The story is full of danger and mystery because everyone is trapped on an island with a killer. It was a little predictable, but it didn't ruin the story for me. I would highly recommend this book to cozy mystery fans!

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC in exchange for my honest review!

Description
In Danger at the Cove, the second book in a delightful cozy series by Hannah Dennison a surprise visitor makes an appearance on the island—and murder ensues.

Renovations on Tregarrick Rock Hotel are coming along, and Evie Mead thinks they just might be done by opening day. Then one of her sister Margot’s old Hollywood friends, Louise, arrives unannounced—and expecting VIP treatment.

Evie has half a mind to tell Louise to find other accommodations, but Margot pleads with Evie, saying that Louise—despite her upbeat and demanding attitude—is grieving her recently deceased husband. Evie pities her, and besides, the sisters need help. A simple rewiring project has resulted in a major overhaul of the hotel, and they’re way over budget. The small life insurance policy left to Evie by her own husband is gone, and they are desperate for funds. Margot believes that Louise, a marketing guru, can put the hotel on the map and give it the boost it needs.

But when a member of the hotel staff is found dead, and then another murder follows, the sisters’ plans crumble before their eyes. Who would do such a thing—and why? In a rollicking adventure involving a shipwreck filled with buried treasure, a dashing and mysterious Australian named Randy, and old rivalries stretching back to far before Evie and Margot ever set foot on the island, it’s all hands on deck to find the killer—and save the hotel.

Danger at the Cove is the second Island Sisters cozy mystery by Hannah Dennison. Released 17th Aug 2021 by Macmillan on their Minotaur imprint, it's 304 pages and is available in hardcover, audio, and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links throughout. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats, it makes it so easy to find info with the search function.

This is a modern cozy set on the Isles of Scilly, off the coast of Cornwall. The author is skilled with settings and the descriptions were clear and easy to imagine. The characters are well drawn, three dimensional and distinct. The author gives more than a passing nod to Christie and other "closed setting" classics of the golden age. I was impressed with the clear and concise writing in this mystery and although I hadn't read the first book in the series, I had no trouble following the plot or keeping everything straight in my mind. There are some minor spoilers (but nothing major) if the books are read out of order.

I liked the way the clues were hidden throughout the book and not just waved in front of readers' faces. The intertwined mysteries are cleverly constructed and the denouement and resolution are well written and satisfying. I enjoyed this installment enough that I intend to keep an eye out for further books in the series and to go find the series starter on the author's backlist to get "caught up". There's lots of skullduggery, hidden motives, secrets, sunken treasure, shipwrecks, and theft. The descriptions are a little more graphic than the fluffiest of cozy mysteries, but nothing egregious. The language is PG with light cursing, nothing to scandalize. Spelling and vernacular are mostly American English (color, honor, television, etc) and used in context for clarity.

Four stars. This was a thoroughly enjoyable light read. This is a very well written example of the genre.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

This is the 2nd book in the series and if it's possible, it's better than the first. There's something magical for me about the setting, I have no problem imagining the Tregarrick Rock Hotel. I also enjoy Evie, Margot and the rest of the characters. For me, this is a modern British Whodunnit. I'll anxiously await book 3.

Danger at the Cove: An Island Sisters Mystery
By Hannah Dennison
Minotaur
2021

Review by Cynthia Chow

After being shattered by the death of her beloved husband, Evie and her newly divorced sister Margot left the States for the Isles of Sicily’s, an archipelago off of the Cornish coast. Raised in the the hospitality trade despite their departures into Hollywood productions and life in Soho, they are about to reopen the Tregarrick Rock Hotel once the electrical systems are all up to grade. They are definitely not up-to-par and ready for guests yet, but Margot pleas for them to accept her bestie LA friend Louise Vanderhoven as an early arrival. Pulling at Evie’s sympathies are Margot’s declaration that Louise is devastated after the passing of her own husband, a sentiment rather betrayed by Louise being accompanied by the new love-of-her-life. While even Margot raises her eyebrows at her friend’s quick recovery and eagerness to take on another husband as soon as possible, Evie can’t help but be charmed by the handsome finance investor Randall Campbell. Louise is also on a mission to film a movie on Tregarrick Rock, one based on a book that Margot had long sought to turn into a movie herself. While this would fulfill a dream she had formed with her now ex-husband, Margot is not sure if she is willing to see her long-held hopes once again go up in flames.

It’s a tragedy then, that before either the hotel opens or their dreams of a movie can begin that their young handyman goes missing and never returns with Louise’s one lost bag. When events quickly escalate into multiple murders, an injured Louise, and a mysterious ancient shipwreck just off of the coast, Evie and Margo find themselves trapped in yet another stormy, gothic mystery. Delicious English meals, deceptive identities, and a brilliantly dry-witted and wry detective sergeant all lead towards escalating tension and multiple reveals of crimes and greedy criminals.

Having somehow missed the previous entry in this series, I was surprised at how quickly I fell in love with Evie and the Tregarrick Hotel. I probably shouldn’t have, as Hampshire-born Hannah Dennison is also the prolific author of the delightful Honeychurch Hall and Vicky Hill mystery series, both of which are inundated with charming, witty characters. Devon and Cornwall Constabulary Detective Sergeant Patricia Williamson is spectacular, arriving with subtle interrogation methods and an unsubtle ability to narrow in on secrets. Everyone does seem to be hiding something at the Tregarrick Rock Hotel, and while some may suspect a culprit early on the solution is never that simple. The charm of this British Island setting is as alluring as the characters, all of whom are multi-faceted and make it impossible to judge which is the most entertaining. A suspenseful ending that introduces an even more attractive future is sure to have mystery readers eagerly anticipating their next visit to the Isles of Sicily’s Tregarrick Rock Hotel.

I think I liked this even more than the first in the series. It was a fast, engaging mystery that pulled me in right away. Sisters Margot and Evie are almost ready to debut their boutique style hotel with old world vibes on Tregarrick Rock in the Isles of Scilly, off the Cornish coast. As a sort of preview, Margot reveals a friend, recently widowed, is coming for a visit. Louise turns out to be a tall order, lots of luggage and a lothario in tow. As the renovations are finalized, and the tide reveals the skeleton of a sunken ship, having not one but two members of the hotel group die is worrying. There is a bit of humor, a nice sense of sisterly bonds and a bit of secluded island a la Christie thrown in. I particularly chuckled when the local law, Patty, quoted Lee Corso. How would she know this?! A fun read.

Danger at the Cove (Island Sisters Mystery #2). By Hannah Dennison. 2021. Minotaur Books (ARC eBook).

Sisters Evie and Margot are renovating the Tregarrick Rock Hotel when an old friend of Margot’s arrives at the island with others in tow for a movie project. But the project never takes off as a member of the hotel staff is found dead and presumably murdered. Two sisters who are night and day, locals and a staff of workers with history, a diva and a mysterious Aussie, all on an isolated island prone to high tides and storms. Danger at the Cove was an enjoyable mystery and flowed nicely from the first installment of the Island Sisters Mystery series.

Danger at the Cove is book two in the An Island Sisters Mystery series by Hannah Dennison.
This Cozy has plenty of plot twists and suspects that will have you guessing to the end. There are likeable and a couple hard to like characters. The setting is an island which adds to the mystery.
I was given an ARC by St Martin's Press via NetGalley for an honest review.

This is book 2 in the Island Sisters Mystery series. I adored book one and this one was just as great. The protagonist, Evie Mead, is very relatable. The stories remind me of "if Agatha Christie designed the Clue board game."

I found the characters extremely quirky, some endearing and some hatable. The fact that the writing can cause you to hate characters and still love the story speaks volumes.

The setting was great. I mean what better setting is there for a mystery than an old inn on a secluded island? Tregarrick is definitely a place that I would love to visit.

Let’s talk about the plot. Several people on an island, all with their own motives, no easy way on or off, and everyone is a suspect. Brilliant.

I am looking forward to more adventures with Evie and Margot. I hope to see more of the part time characters in the next installment and a possible romantic interest.

I had an advanced digital copy of this novel from NetGalley and purchased the audiobook. I was concerned that the narrator had changed; however, Ella Lynch did a fabulous job.

If you are a fan of cozies and locked room mysteries give this new series by Hannah Dennison a try. Best read in order but still a great read as a stand alone. Evie and her sister Margot are struggling to get their boutique hotel up and running. The Art Deco hotel is located on an island 28 miles off the coast of Cornwall - hence the locked room sub genre.
Evie is a recent widow who was, she thought, married to a wealthy man. In the first book, Death at High Tide, she discovers the harsh reality - she's broke and the new owner of the Tregarrick Rock Hotel. Now partnered with her sister, Margot, trying to get the hotel ready for its grand reopening, things have gone sideways. The rewiring of the entire hotel may delay the reopening. Needless to say the bills are piling up. When one of Margot's LA friends, Louise, arrives unannounced, it's a bit of a mixed blessing. Louse has a talent for marketing but she is a real diva. Being a recent widow she gets sympathy from Evie but then Randy appears. He's Louise's boy toy. By the middle of the book things really get interesting. With a couple of murders to solve - not good for marketing their new venture -Evie tries to unmask the killer and save their investment...and their future.
The pace is a bit slow and the murders take awhile to make their appearance but it's worth it. The setting, the main characters and the mystery make for an entertaining read. I will happily add the next book in the series to my TBR list.
My thanks to the publisher, Minotaur and to NetGalley for giving me an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you Minotaur Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read "Danger at the Cove: An Island Sisters Mystery" in exchange for my honest review.

This is the second book in the series and it was even better than the first. There was more mystery, more intrigue and several characters thrown in that made you wonder if they were the culprit.

Evie Mead and her sister Margot Chandler are fixing up the Tregarrick Rock Hotel on the Isles of Scilly. They are getting ready for their upcoming Open House when Margot's friend from Hollywood Louise Vanderhoven arrives for a visit. Her husband just passed away and Evie thinks that she's not quite acting the grieving widow. Especially when her new boyfriend Randy arrives.

Not expecting their food delivery for a couple of days Evie asks Ollie to grab a few things when he goes to run errands. When Ollie doesn't return Evie is worried but Margot and the others tell her not to be concerned. When Evie finds a bundle of wet mail and some tomatoes on the path, she feels that something has indeed happened to Ollie.

We are reintroduced to Patricia Williamson from the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary. She has a slightly "insane" method of questioning people but her methods do help in this case because what seemed silly at the time actually help Evie put the pieces together.

When another person ends up dead it becomes obvious that people knew each other from before and were not admitting to it. Money, lots of it meant for investing and pirate treasure also figure into this mystery.

This book had me totally hooked from the beginning because the characters are well written and interesting. You can relate to Evie and Margot. The descriptions of the hotel and the Isles of Scilly are captivating. I read this book in one sitting because I wanted to know what would happen. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

There's a lot going on at Tregarrick Rock Hotel. Sisters Evie and Margot have their hands full with renovations, but it's looking like things might just get done in time for their grand opening. Margot is sure that they can accommodate one of her old friends who just arrived from Hollywood with little advance notice, and the friend's new beau, who arrived with absolutely no advance notice. And then there's a murder. I didn't reread the cover copy before starting the book so I wasn't quite sure who was going to wind up dead and not knowing definitely added to the suspense.

I've really been looking forward to the second Island Sisters mystery and this one is just as much fun as the first book. The hotel and island sound enchanting, especially the garden of figureheads. A rare low tide is going to expose a centuries old shipwreck and they plan to walk out to it. (Unlike the characters, I think I'd be headed out as soon as it was safe to start walking instead of waiting until after breakfast!)

The story was good, even though I struggled. I love British mysteries but I struggled not wanting to strangle Margot's pushy friend from L.A. I love the dynamic between Evie and Margot. I only spot read the first book to be prepared to read this one. I would definitely read the first one before reading this one. The series to me is very reminiscent of the British tv mysteries me and my mama used to watch such as Grandchester.
The story flowed good and if you like mysteries you will for sure enjoy this one.

I was give an ARC through Netgalley for an honest review.
