I will not be giving feedback on this book. I started it, and was not in the right mindset for reading it. When/if I do pick it up again, I will definitely leave a thoughtful review.

This was a book that had good moments but never came together as a full experience for me. I lost interest halfway through and I think part of the issue is that after reading the blurb I went in expecting a romantic comedy. Maybe going in with the right expectation would make a difference because the writing is good,

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Ghosts by Dolly Alderton is about a young British woman who is negotiating being single in her thirties after a long relationship ends. Comparisons to Bridget Jones's Diary are somewhat misguided as the protagonist of this story has a lot more self-confidence and doesn't exhibit very much self-sabotage. She is perfectly reasonable and attractive but the author takes pains to show us this is not enough, at least for heterosexual females looking for a mate. The story was entertaining, but no new ground was covered. Recommended for fans of contemporary romance who don't require an HEA.

This book overall was excellent, but it moved WAY to slowly for me. I usually read books in 2-3 days and this one took me 3 weeks along with a lot of convincing myself not to give up on it. If you love stories with character development and don't mind a little bit of a slower pace, this book will be just fine for you.

I love the complexity of the title 'Ghosts" as it really has more than one meaning within the story. I also really love Nina.

I was really excited about reading this book. However, the plot was moving incredibly slow for my taste. This in turn ruined the experience for me and was unable to connect with this story.

Had to dnf. This book was very boring, I read about half before giving up because nothing was happening and the plot wasn’t moving. Gave Bridget Jones vibes, so if that’s your thing check it out, if not I say skip it!

This book has this can't-put-it-down magic. It's funny and relatable and sometimes heart-wrenching. It was so well written and every sentence crackles with life. Definitely one to recommend to friends and book clubs!

I went into this book with high hopes based on the summary. It was a slow read and had to put it down a few times. I struggled at times connecting with the characters. I appreciate the advanced read of this book and look forward to reading more from this author. Overall 3.5 stars.

So initially I had a problem downloading and reading my copy from the NetGalley app. It’s been a few months and I decided to purchase the book so I could read it and complete my review. I’m glad I did! It was funny and endearing, and it was totally relatable. I can see why it’s a fan favorite! This is a book that I would read again and a book I would recommend for someone looking for a story with a little bit of everything that life and love entails.

I will admit, it took me a bit to get into this book. I found the first few chapters kind of boring. There wasn't many conversations, it was just Nina talking and telling us what happened and what was said. I am happy to say I didn't give up and I got pulled in! Nina and her friend, Lola, are hilarious together.

This is a story of a 30 something woman who is navigating friendships, family, and the ever elusive romance. She ends up learning who she is and her acceptance of herself.

When something happens, she is forced to take a new look at her life and sees everything that she was missing, good & bad. This is a fun and interesting look at Nina's life.

Ghosts by Dolly Alderton is a solid 4 star book for me. This story starts off in the best possible way-It’s Nina Dean’s 32nd birthday, August 3rd, and Nina is getting ready to play the song she’s danced to every year since, the song that was #1 on Aug 3, 1986, “The Edge of Heaven” by Wham. Yes! I’m all in!

From here, this book explores family, friendship, and love. Nina lives in the middle apartment in a 3 apartment house. Her downstairs neighbor is a very scary guy who likes to play loud music. Her upstairs neighbor is an elderly woman. Nina has two bff’s, Katherine her childhood bestie, and Lola, her college bestie. Nina is newly single after breaking up with her long-term boyfriend, Joe. Though, the two of them remain very close friends.

Nina’s parents are getting older. Her father has had a stroke, and now is showing signs of dementia. Her mother, in her late 50s, is not coping well which she’s showing by hanging out with her friends, going out often, and, in Nina’s opinion, not acting very caring about her father.

Throughout Nina’s busy story, she does find live with handsome Macy who she meets on a dating app. However, right after he tells Nina he loves her, he ghosts her.

This book has everything I love-difficult relationships, dysfunctional families, characters who I loved, and characters I didn’t. At the end of the story, Nina understands more about her friends and family, and more about herself.

Thank you to @netgalley and #knopf for the advanced e-copy of #ghosts by @dollyalderton !

3.5 stars rounded up

Nina is happily single. She has her own apartment, a career she loves, and a full social life. On a lark, she downloads a dating app, and meets Max. Max is beautiful, smart, and witty; things get intense quickly. But the day after he says "I love you," he disappears.

Nina is left reeling, wondering what happened. Meanwhile, she does what she can to help her mom navigate her father's progressing Alzheimers, tries connecting to her close friend in a different life chapter, helps her ex boyfriend get married, and goes to war with her new neighbor.

I expected a rom-com, but I was surprised to find more depth in Ghosts. It was fun, relatable, satirical, and sad all in one. A realistic look at settling into adulthood in the modern age.

Nina is a 32 year old newly established food writer, after giving up her career as a teacher to take the plunge and go into writing full time. After her consistently single friend Lola persuades her to have a go at dating, she meets the mysterious and handsome Max on the dating app Lynx and falls head over heels. While her new relationship is blossoming, Nina comes to the realisation of how she and those around her are getting older. Most of her friends now have children and live in houses outside of London whilst she has just brought her first tiny flat in Central London that needs a lot of work. What she finds hardest about getting older though, is the fact that her Dad has dementia and his memory is sadly getting worse and she feels like her Mum is slightly in denial about it. We join Nina through the "weirdest year of her life" and how she deals with the different relationships around her.

This was an extremely relatable book and I enjoyed it a lot.

Thank you to #Netgalley and the publishers for this advanced reader's copy that it took me way too long to read. I thought this book was really relatable to any single woman in her thirties. It made me think of how difficult it is for women as they get older to date, and it is so much easier for men of course. I liked it because it shed light on this patriarchal issue of dating and ghosting people, but I found it pretty depressing overall, and that is why I gave it a 3.

British rom com- sort of. I loved that this book doesn't make life simple and always ending with love and sunshine.
Quick read - loved the strong women.

Everything seemed to be going well for Nina. She is publishing her second book, she owns her own apartment, she has great friends and a great first date.
.
Max and her really connect and then just like that he ghosts her. All of a sudden everything comes tumbling down. She is dealing with her dad’s declining health, her mom’s denial, her best friend ignoring her and her editor hates her new novel. Nothing is going right.
.
This is ultimately a story about Nina finding herself through the difficulties and challenges of life. This book conveyed many emotions while I laughed, worried and cried it encompassed all the emotions of life.
.
Thank you @netgalley and @knopf for an arc in exchange for an honest review

Courtesy of Netgalley I received the ARC of Ghosts by Dolly Alderton. This contemporary debut novel is so insightful and beautifully written, covering relationships with family and friends. Parenthood is presented in all stages, from babies to adulthood, with it's joys and trials. The expectations and complications of online dating provide an illuminating thread, while the descriptions and challenges of dementia are emotional and spot on. I loved this book!

Most romantic comedies want you to believe that finding The One is a fun-filled adventure, with just a few bumps but even more laughs along the way. But in Ghosts by Dolly Alderton, a lonely young woman experiences more than her share of bumps in her quest to find love...

I apologize for the late feedback on this book as my Kindle was damaged beyond repair and it had to be replaced. I did not get to finish this book as I had just started it before the accident and it was not on my "new" kindle once it was replaced and updated with the damaged kindle's content and I could not figure out how to have it sent again to a new device.
