Having read the novel Graceling when it first came out, it was nice to read the graphic novel version and see the images I had imagined play out. It was also a good way to remind myself of some of the events in the book. The artwork was well done and I loved the diversity of the characters. I would recommend this graphic novel to anyone who is already familiar with the Graceling world and I hope that the rest of the series will be translated into graphic novel form.
Thank you to Netgalley and the author for allowing me to read this!
I loved seeing this made into a graphic book! The work is amazing! I highly recommend picking up this authors work!!!
I can't write this under five stars. One of my favourite books every turned into a graphic novel!!! I loved the art so much, especially the scenery for fall on the mountain, it was beautiful. I think the captured the book really well and didn't miss out on anything important and it was lovely to see Po and Katsa come to life!
While I was delighted to revisit an old friend of a story, and thought the adaptation was… fine…, I was disappointed to learn that the vibrant cover was not really indicative of the art throughout the rest of the book. I hate to write a disparaging review, but between my personal disconnect from the visual style, and a certain… rather gruesomely portrayed scene near the end, I cannot say that I enjoyed this graphic novel.
**Disclaimer: I received a free early access copy of Graceling (Graphic Novel) by Kristin Cashore and Gareth Hinds through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for this opportunity.
Graceling (Graphic Novel) by Kristin Cashore and adapted/illustrated by Gareth Hinds is a graphic novel adaptation of the young adult fantasy novel Graceling. It tells the story of Lady Katsa who is supposedly graced with killing. Katsa gets caught up into a greater conspiracy and has to go on a daring rescue. The graphic novel adaptation is set to be published on November 16th. I rated it four stars on Goodreads.
Here's the summary from Goodreads:
The beloved New York Times best-selling YA fantasy by Kristin Cashore is now available as a graphic novel, with stunning illustrations by award-winning artist Gareth Hinds.
Katsa is a Graceling, one of the rare people born with an extreme skill. As niece of the king, she lived a life of privilege until the day her ability to kill a man with her bare hands revealed itself during a royal banquet. Now she acts as her uncle’s enforcer, traveling the kingdom and threatening those who dare oppose him.
But everything changes when she meets Po, a foreign prince Graced with combat skills who is searching for the truth about his grandfather’s disappearance. When Katsa agrees to help him, she never expects to learn a new truth about her own Grace—or about a terrible secret that could destroy them all.
With "gorgeous storytelling" (School Library Journal, starred review) and characters "crafted with meticulous devotion" (Kirkus Reviews, starred review), Graceling is a beloved classic that has continued to resonate with readers for over a decade.
I loved the Graceling novel. It was so interesting and well written. The world building was fantastic and I just really loved Katsa as a character. I also really loved the romance that develops between her and Po. This graphic novel was a great amalgamation of so many of the best elements of the novel.
I loved the art style. The characters were well designed and just like I expected them to look. The colours were lovely and it was just a really well done graphic novel. They took the key points of the story and put them into an easier to read version. You didn't lose the world building and it was just all very beautiful.
As I mentioned, I love the story. Fantasy is one of my favourite genres, and while this had some of the typical elements of high fantasy, it also had a lot of elements that I didn't expect to come across. The Graces feel very unique to me. I like how different they were and the ways that they presented visually.
Overall, if you're interested in the plot of the story, you should definitely check out the original and also the graphic novel adaptation when it comes out in November.
Though it's been a few years since my last reread, I love Graceling and was excited to see this upcoming graphic novel adaptation. The novel is longer and more detailed, but I enjoyed this version nonetheless.
I think this will appeal to teens who like fast-paced fantasy or graphic novels, and existing Graceling fans. Additionally, because of the pared-down story and accessible text, I think it could be recommended to tweens who might not be ready for the novel.
I have read Graceling before so for fans of the series this is a good refresher, it is also a good introduction for new fans. The comic follows the story pf the book closley, I didnt notice anything major missing. the actions scenes are well done, the art overall was ok but not great. Just like the book my favorite character in the comic is Po.
I was given an advanced copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I've read Graceling, but it's been a good number of years. I really only remembered the most basic things. I enjoyed this graphic novelization of the story, and would recommend it for younger readers where I would not necessarily recommend the novel itself.
This graphic novel of Graceling was fantastic. I literally read it in one sitting and the illustrations are superb! I can’t wait for this to come out so I can get a copy! Many thanks to the author and publishers for sending me this copy to review!
The artwork of the books was absolutely beautiful and it was so well done. This graphic novel just reminded me how much I loved this series and world all those years ago when I fist stumbled across it. An amazing read.
A solid graphic adaptation. Hinds style definitely helps capture the gritty world and very intense storylines.
This is surely going to bring some new fans to this edgy series.
For Libraries: You are going to want to invest in this for your YA graphic shelves.
The work of Gareth Hinds is always beautiful and groundbreaking. I loved this visual adaptation and would recommend it for a wide range of readers — ready for home and classroom reading, and an enjoyable adventure.
Katsa is Graced with killing, a skill she does not wish to have. The King, Randa, uses her as his pawn to inflict fear on the people he rules over. Katsa has always despised her uncle for trying to control her. With the help of her guards, she creates a council to fight against her uncle. On a mission one night to rescue a prisoner, she meets Prince Po of Liend and everything changes.
I was a big fan of Graceling when I first read the novel, and I loved seeing these characters in graphic novel form! I enjoyed seeing the world brought to life and the art style was wonderful. I think the biggest complaint I have is that because it was a graphic novel, a lot of the buildup to Katsa's and Po's relationship was left out. There were just so many important events from the novel that couldn't be fully included, as the graphic novel needed to be shorter than a full blown novel.
Overall, I enjoyed this addition to the graceling universe, and I do think fans should read it for the nostalgia. I also think it would be great for those who have not read the novel yet, to give them an introduction into the world and these characters
The graphic novel of Graceling is great!
I read the original a long time ago and I had forgotten most of the story and the graphic novel was a great way to remember the book and the drawings were just amazing!
The story follows Katsa, a graceling who has the extraordinary power of a warrior who can kill, as she enforces her uncles wishes by using her unique grace. She has never questioned her uncle until one day she meets another graceling called Po after she helps him uncover why his grandfather was taken from him. They work together and find out that there are other forces against them and only Katsa and Po can help save the day.
A wonderful story and a wonderful graphic novel!
Thank you to the publisher, author and NetGalley for the arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I received an E-ARC of this graphic novel from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
It was fine? I feel very middle of the road for this graphic novel. It wasn't bad, the story was good, but I could have just reread the book. I don't think the artwork added anything to the story. There isn't anything in the book that is so abstract that a visual helps the reader understand the plot. The illustrations were good, but I disliked Kasta's hair after she cut it. It didn't seem like a good visual representation of her change.
This is a good adaptation for individuals who want to know the story but not read the book. If you have already read Graceling, this graphic novel doesn't add anything to the storyline. It was just very middle ground. It would have been more interesting for the author to expand on a storyline rather than retell the original book.
Overall, I rate this book three stars. You can read it if you want, but you don't need to.
The art of this graphic novel is well done - it shows the emotions of the characters well and gives depth to the setting. I particularly liked the way Po’s sight was shown in the epilogue. The story is one of my favorites; I read the novel years ago and remember how I felt reading the book. The graphic novel, for me, does not have quite the same impact as the book simply because we don’t get to be in Katsa’s head as much to fully understand the depth of her personality. The boxes with her thoughts in this graphic novel definitely help and let the reader see what she is wrestling with, but her decisions seem to come more easily. Again, I feel it is just the differences of the medium in which the story is told. I fully appreciate the strong female characters in this story and I think the graphic novel would be engaging to many readers. I am happy that Graceling is going to find even more of an audience! Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC to review.
This was a perfect adaptation of Graceling! All fans of the original series will rejoice at the beautiful art that brings to life Katsa, Po, and Bitterblue.
Katsa is born with a Grace - a gift for killing. Her king uses her as threat against neighboring kingdoms until Katsa rebellion comes to a head and she and Prince Po strike out on their own to investigate rumours of a Graced monarch who is not what he seems.
It's been a long time since I read the original novel, so I'm not sure how accurate this graphic novel adaptation is, but the story flowed well and the art was also well done. A good introduction to the series for newcomers. Perfect for fans of Sarah J Maas.
Thank you Netgalley and publishers for allowing me to read this arc in exchange for an honest review.
Graceling is one of my go to novels to re-read when I'm in a book hangover or can't figure out what to read next, so I was very excited to receive an arc of the graphic novel.
One thing to know is that I love this book. While it might not have the best writing, I love the story and can't help the tears that fall when reading the events that happen towards the end. When reading the graphic novel, I really liked being able to see a visual of some of the events that happen in the novel, along with the strategic ways the illustrator portrays some scenes. However, I say some events on purpose because this graphic novel was too short! There are so many important parts that are missing and the pace of it goes so fast. Things that took days/weeks in the novel had like 4 scenes in the graphic novel, and it changed the feeling of the novel. I was no longer connected to the characters like I used to be, and when that part that would normally bring tears to my eyes came up, I hardly batted and eye only only felt a bit sad about it. Even as I tried to imagine the build up that was missing from the graphic novel.
Overall, I liked the illustrations and the author did tell the correct story, but it loses its quality with all of the missing details and events.
This is a great adaptation of the original Graceling book. The graphic novel does a good job of getting the story out there in a short, art filled story. I hope that readers enjoy the graphic novel and then go read the novel as of course all the details in the novel just make it so much more of story.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for an eARC of this book for an honest review.
