I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

Three PAWS and the secret cave is a beautiful and sensitively written book for children to help them in preparation of a loved ones imminent death from a long term illness e.g. Cancer.
The book is about a bear called Three PAWS who helps a little mountain goat to find her grandfather who has been very poorly for a long time. The animals band together to go in search of him and when they find him he explains why he has gone off to his final resting place alone.
This is such a touching book and would be a great resource for a child facing bereavement or going through it.

Three Paws and the Secret Cave is a book that attempts to teach children about death, dying, and the full circle process that is life. Cappy is an old goat, that knows that his time is up. He heads for a cave so he can die alone, and not attract any predators to the goat herd that may attempt to hurt anyone else. He finds a secret cave to wait out his last days. His granddaughter notices that he is missing, and arranges a search party. When the search party finds him, they have a celebration of life with Cappy, making everyone understand the circle of life, and gaining closure for all of Cappy's friends and family.

This book does a good job at describing death in a way that is compassionate, understanding and gentle for children. I would recommend it especially for those children and families that are experiencing loss, and the young child may not be able to understand any other way. This would be a great tool for parents and loved ones to use to help aide understanding of a small child of a huge concept (death) that most children just are developmentally unable to wrap their heads around.

Thank you to the author, illustrator, publisher and NetGalley for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book covers a topic not often handled by children’s stories: death, particularly dealing with death of an elderly loved one. The writing is straightforward although some of the bits may require some explanation for very young readers. Otherwise, it’s a cute book and I enjoyed the dedication to fuzzy friends at the end.
