I quite enjoyed reading The Third Grave.

The storyline was captivating and the well-crafted characters made this one of those books you cannot put down until the very end.

In The Third Grave, we see Nikki and Reed hot on the trail of a cold case as three graves are discovered. The problem - there are only two skeletons. So what happened to the third body? There are enough twists and turns to keep you guessing. A must-read!

It's no secret that Lisa Jackson is one of my all time favorite authors. She can weave a story like nobody else and still to this day can keep me guessing until the end. Her latest book was no different.

It was nice to be back in the land of the infamous Beaumont family and the secrets that have been hidden in their house. This time a grave that seems to be missing one if it's occupants. While the other occupants could hold the key to a decades long mystery.

Nikki hasn't changed. She's still that nosey take charge reporter turned true crime novelist. Although she tries her best throughout the story to stay out of trouble it never goes in her favor. She does however struggle with her actions and what her husband will think/say once he finds out what she's been up to.

Reed seems to struggle throughout with doing his job and keeping tabs on his life risking wife. He knows that she won't take no for an answer and will do just about anything in the name of a story...even if it goes against everything...including his wishes.

Myths and natural disasters play a huge part in solving a mystery that has been insolvable for decades.

This book is the fourth installment in the Savannah series. But you could read this as a standalone. The beginning of the book was difficult to get invested in and the use of the “F” word was too liberal. I am not a prude, but if that word is used too frequently, I am turned off. This is a good mystery with some irritating aspects.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Publishing Corporation for my advanced review copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own.

Secrets lies and deception; does anyone do it better than Lisa Jackson. Throw in some romantic suspense and you've got a great evening of reading. Whenever I need to completely escape the mundane, I've never been disappointed.

I am absolutely a fan of Lisa Jackson, so I'm always excited when a new book of hers comes out. And while sometimes her books can be hit or miss, this one was a definite hit! I was hooked right from the beginning! It's the fourth in the Nikki Gilette/Savannah series, but it can 100 percent be read as a standalone.

In this novel, a hurricane rips through Savannah, giving a local ne'er-do-well the perfect opportunity to look for a rumor lost treasure at the crumbling, abandoned Beaumont mansion. But he finds much more than he bargained for when instead, he finds the bodies of two young girls, sisters, who went missing 15 years earlier, along with their younger sister, and a third grave, most likely dug for the still missing girl. Nikki resolves to find the truth, even as it grows increasingly clear that someone wants to keep the truth dead and buried.

The mystery in this one is so good - there's plenty of suspense as the whole community is pretty much suspect in the weird disappearance, in which the three little girls seemed to just vanish into thin air. And everyone has stuck to their story for 15 years. It's a real puzzle. I really enjoyed seeing it all play out, through I did guess one of the big "twists" before it was officially revealed. (But that didn't ruin anything for me).

The overall ending was satisfying and well done. It felt complete.

Nikki is an interesting character. She doesn't really know when to stop, but overall she means well, and that endeared her to me. But oh man, can she cause some trouble, and there's some heartache in there as well, which just tore at me. Jackson really knows how to draw some great characters who can make you feel a whole range of emotions.

Overall, this ranks right up there with some of the best Lisa Jackson. Its not heavy on the romance, more on the suspense, but if that's what you're looking for, this is certainly your book. I highly recommend it!

Welcome back to Pierce Reed and Nikki Gillette and the $th book of the Savannah series. Once again Jackson had me at he edge of my seat. With 3 graves and only 2 skeletons this book is intriguing to say the least. The only downfall for me was Nikki. I've always enjoyed the character but this time she was too reckless for me to like.

Wow! Lisa Jackson just ripped your heart out with this one. It was so good, but so emotional. It had me crying in places.
Nikki, still doing everything for a story, but dealing with so many emotional problems, how does she handle it?
Absolutely loved every minute of this book!!

This was my first Lisa Jackson book. It is the Fourth book in the Savannah series. While I didn’t need to read the rest of the series to understand this one I think it would’ve helped me understand some of the backstory on the two main characters.
The book focuses on Detective Pierce Reed and his journalist wife Nikki Gillette. After the remains of two young girls are found at the historic Beaumont estate Reed is assigned the case. When Nikki hears of the case she immediately drives to the crime scene to snoop instead of listening to her husband. From there all hell breaks loose.
This is where the book went downhill for me. I could not stand Nikki and her selfish acts and the danger she put others in. Maybe I would’ve felt more compassion for her if I had read the earlier novels, but I found it extremely difficult to do so. I feel as if she was not held accountable for her actions. Sure she felt “guilt” but I felt the events that happened had an unrealistic outcome between herself and her husband.
Aside from that I though that this book had a great plot. I would’ve loved it as a police procedural solely from Reed’s point of view as I found the case fascinating. Despite Nikki I had to finish the book to see what happened. There were plenty of twists, turns and red herrings to keep me guessing. Overall, a solid thriller.

Classic Jackson

I must confess, Nikki Gillette is not my favorite of Jackson’s serial characters. And, in The Third Grave, I found her character to be irresponsible and impulsive rather than determined and intrepid—which I think is what Jackson was going for.

The story itself is compelling: the remains of two sisters who had been missing for 20 years are unexpectedly found at the tail end of a hurricane. But, three sisters had actually gone missing. Who killed Holly and Poppy—and where was Rose?

All in all, this a classic Lisa Jackson mystery, with a bit of a strange twist at the end.

Two skeletons and a third grave are discovered in the basement of the old run-down Beaumont mansion. All of this goes back to twenty years ago when the three Duval sisters went missing. When these skeletons are examined and determined to be two of the Duval sisters (Holly and Poppy) questions will linger about what happened to the younger sister Rose.

Crime reporter Nikki Gillette knows there is a story to be told and is relentless in her pursuit to find the answers. Her husband, Detective Pierce Reed is constantly cautioning Nikki about her pursuits. The one thing I found irritating about Nikki was her bullheaded pursuit that leads to death and disaster. Reed finds himself rescuing and defending her.

There are so many hidden secrets in discovering what happened to the deceased sisters and whether the younger sister is still alive. In order to keep these secrets hidden several murders will take place. Greed is the overall reason for all the pain and suffering.

Lisa Jackson did a wonderful job in keeping you guessing!

The Third Grave by Lisa Jackson is a highly recommended Southern Gothic crime novel.

Instead of finding the reputed fortune when searching the cellar of the deteriorating Beaumont mansion after a hurricane hits the Savannah area, a petty criminal discovers the skeletal remains of two girls. Detective Pierce Reed is called out to the scene and his wife crime writer Nikki Gillette soon clandestinely follows. The two girls are the older two Duval sisters, Holly, 12, and Poppy, 10, who have been missing for twenty years. The search is now on for the perpetrator and the third and youngest sister, Rose, 5, who is still missing. The girls went to the movies with their older brother, Owen. Rather than staying with them, Owen left to spend time with his girl friend and became the main suspect but nothing was ever proven. Now it is time to take another look at the previous investigation and Owen. As Reed is officially investigating the cold case, Nikki ignores his order for her to stay away, sure that this case will result in a successful true crime book for her, and her poor decisions result in putting herself and others at great risks.

As the fourth book set in Savannah featuring Pierce Reed and Nikki Gillette, you can read The Third Grave as a standalone novel. There is enough backstory to easily keep up with the main characters as your compelling interest will be in the mystery and solving the case. The plot does have a slow pace at the beginning but it quickly picks up as more information is uncovered. Chapters alternate from the point-of-view of different characters, including the killer, who is determined to not be identified. The key to enjoying this novel is to focus on the plot, take note of the discoveries and new information uncovered, and catch the clues pointing to the identity of the killer. There will be a few surprises along the way.

I enjoyed the novel. The cold case and the investigation are interesting, however Nikki, as the novel unfolds, increasingly becomes an unlikable character. She takes unnecessary risks. She is self-centered. Her actions are impetuous and head strong. There are consequences to her actions, but she seemingly shrugs them off. She is not disagreeable all the time, but her determination isn't tempered by a thoughtful consideration of the consequences, which feels rather immature. I had to set my opinion about her aside and simply focused on the plot, which is interesting and will hold your attention. 3.5 rounded up

The Third Grave by Lisa Jackson
Pierce Reed/Nikki Gilbert Novel #4

I have read and loved Lisa Jackson’s books and have eagerly looked forward to reading what she writes but for some reason I could not connect with this story. I am not sure if it is because I don’t remember or haven’t read the previous three books in the series or if it is just this series that is not right for me. I just looked back over the past few years of her work that I have read and found that the more recent books have not resonated at all but that rereading her older books still do. I hope that her future books will be more my style.

My thoughts:
* Nikki: reporter, wife, pregnant, more interested in “the story” than in anything else. She takes risks that are crazy and more in line with someone half her age. I did not connect with her or even much like her.
* Pierce: detective and husband, committed to his job, wishes Nikki wouldn’t infringe on his cases but understands her need go get “the story”. (I didn’t get it but he sort of seems to).
* It took a LONG time to find out who the killer was and the motivation for the killings and then the additional killings seemed like…overkill, and it didn’t mesh and solidify for me for some reason.
* This story was not Jackson’s best work, in my opinion, but I am hopeful that her next book will be perfect and will give it a try.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for the ARC – This is my honest review.

2-3 Stars

Pierce Reed and Nikki Gillette are back in book four of this series. Detective Reed is assigned the case from the Beaumont mansion, and of course his wife Nikki is there for the story. But with three graves at the mansion, the biggest problem right now is why there are only two bodies.

The Third Grave is a thriller. which takes place in Savanah, Georgia. A local man with a questionable past decides to look for the treasure that his Grandfather told him was in an abandoned Old Beaumont Mansion. HIs Grandfather had been the caretaker for the wealthy family and had seen the matriarch of the family hide valuables in the cellar. He goes to the cellar and is disturbed to find the skeletons of two children instead of a treasure. He leaves quickly and calls 911 to report the skeletons. Detective Pierce Reed gets a call about the case and heads out to the mansion and tells his crime writer wife to stay away from the scene. Of course, Nikki heads right to the property and attempts to stay out of sight.

Forensics determines that the two skeletons and the remains of two sisters that went missing 20 years ago. A third sister also went missing with them and has not been found. Their older brother was suspected in their disappearance but no evidence was found of his involvement so this case has been a cold case. A number of secrets unfold as the search for the killer continues. This was a great book that I highly recommend.
