Wow what a mystery! A lot of it was more low-key and not tons of action going on, but just when I thought it was getting quiet, pow! Lyla learned something about her mom's past that was pretty unsettling, but it did explain quite a bit of her recent behavior. I don't want to go into details too much, because there's a possibility of spoiling something no matter what I mention.

I'm glad to see that Lyla was still with Brad Jones and at least Quinn her ex was treating her fairly well regarding the investigation. Lots of surprises came out, and the showdown was kind of a show stopper. Very well written with little surprises popping up here and there. I definitely can recommend this series. This book seems more geared toward not having had to read the first one, although I always recommend starting the beginning. I admit to not always having done that myself when ARCs looked tempting though! ;)

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher via NetGalley, and my opinions are my own.

Murder and intrigue come to the small town of Sweet Mountain, Georgia located just 45 minutes from Atlanta. It's October and the town is getting ready for Octoberfest. Lyla is happy as a PI in training working with her uncle who changed careers after 16 years as a detective. She is exactly where she wants to be but a homicide is about to shake things up.
Lyla is also a member of a true crime book group known as the Jane Doe Book Club and they are no strangers to crime - past and present. When there is a charity event hosted by her mother nobody expects the events of the day will soon involve Lyla and the Jane Does. No sooner have Lyla and her grandmother arrived when the dead body of Leonard Richardson is found in the library, bashed over the head with a brass candlestick. Sounds like the killer is taking tips from Dame Agatha. Might that killer be his wife, a member of the book group? It's enough to have Lyla geared up to track down the killer. Certain that Harper didn't kill her husband in the library with a candlestick, Lyla and the group put their talents on show and follow the clues to catch the killer.
After having enjoyed the previous, debut book in this series, On Borrowed Crime, I enjoyed this one even more. Lyla is a strong, believable character with a natural talent for solving crimes, much to her mother's dismay. We have discovered that her mother has some secrets of her own and they play a part in the mystery. Her grandmother adds some wonderful humor to lighten things up. As for the mystery and its similarity to The Crooked House, it is a real page turner and works fine as a stand alone.
My thanks to the publisher Crooked Lane and to NetGalley for giving me an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

Lyla Moody and her grandmother, following a meeting of the Jane Does, arrive at her parents home where gala is taking place. Before the two women can sneak into the kitchen where the caterers are at work with the food, a body is discovered in the library. The prime suspect is the victim's wife and a member of the Jane Does. The Jane Does begin to investigate to prove that their friend did not commit the crime. Lyla learns the murder might be connected to her mother and uncle's past. And trust me, when I say the secret of their past is a doozy.

I've read the first book in the series, but I think this book can be read without reading the first. Now that we know what the secret Lyle's mother and Uncle kept hidden from her, I'm curious to see what happens next in the series.

I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher and/or author via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Book two in the Jane Doe Book Club Mystery series. I enjoyed the first book, On Borrowed Crime, and was happy to be able to follow up on the characters' lives.

Lyla Moody works as an assistant to her uncle who is a P.I., but the mystery in this book does not develop from one of their cases. It begins with Lyla and her grandmother discovering a dead body during a function in Lyla's parents' home. At first this seems to be by chance but, as the mystery deepens, more and more of the case seems to impact directly on Lyla and her family. Not all is as it seems especially regarding her mother and her uncle and events from the past.

There were plenty of slightly crazy people, a suspicious stranger, and more guns and tasers than normal for a cosy mystery. Altogether there were many possible suspects and not everyone was who they appeared to be. Everything became very serious towards the end and there was a very dramatic final reveal. Definitely very readable and recommended to fans of this genre.

This one kept me guessing from beginning to end and really did keep me on the figurative edge of my seat to the very last page. It starts out with all the basic elements of a small-town murder mystery and then it evolves into a brilliantly convoluted tale of secrets and lies. The more that leading lady, Lyla, discovers the more she begins to doubt about everyone around her, and being along for that ride makes for a very exciting read.
Major props to Young for managing to wrap all the threads she wove into the story into one very rational and well-presented bow at the end. There was a moment where I thought there might be too many things going on for them to be satisfactorily resolved, but every i gets dotted and every t crossed.
Overall, it's a quick and very satisfying read that is sure to give your detective skills a good test.

Many happy thanks to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for the early read!

I received a complimentary ARC copy of Reading Between the Crimes (A Jane Doe Book Club Mystery #2) by Kate Young from NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books in order to read and give an honest review.

…brilliantly crafted characters and intriguing clever plotlines that will keep you turning pages…

Reading Between the Crimes, the second in the Jane Doe Book Club Mysteries begins a year or so after the events of book one, On Borrowed Crime. Lyla Moody has established herself at her Uncle Calvin’s Private Investigations Agency, has settled into a comfortable relationship with her agent boyfriend and seems that her family has become a bit more understanding of her life choices. When a local librarian and friend of the true crime book club the Jane Doe’s, Harper Richardson, seems to be under duress and confides in her, Lyla steps up as a friend, agreeing to help her find her missing aunt. Things deteriorate when Lyla and her beloved Gran stumble across the body of Harper’s husband Leonard Richardson at a fundraiser hosted by Lyla’s parents. While waiting for the police to arrive a key piece of evidence goes missing and everyone becomes a suspect. When the case takes a turn and Lyla becomes a target, taunted with clues that coincide with their book club pick, Agatha Christie’s the Crooked House along with her friends Lyla begins to put the pieces together and a strange connection to Lyla’s Mother and Uncle Calvin’s past makes this even more chaotic.

Author, Kate Young has done it again, brilliantly crafted characters and intriguing clever plotlines that will keep you turning pages and if you’re like me…losing sleep. I really enjoyed Reading Between the Crimes, although the second in the series it works well as a stand-alone, but I would really recommend On Borrowed Crime as well, both are fantastic reads, and I am looking forward to reading future books in this series!

Reading Between the Crimes is the second book in the Jane Doe Book Club Mystery by Kate Young. I loved book one but book two is even better and a positive addition to this set! The characters are very likable, well developed and continue to grow from the first book. This story will grab you at page one!! There are many twist and turns that will keep you guessing! The secrets are abundant and surprising and they add to the mystery and intrigue of this well plotted thriller! Young is very good at having the correct recipe of secrets, lies, murder, family dynamics, intrigue and danger that makes up this fast paced novel with a shocking ending that you will never see coming! I highly recommend this one and book one to all cozy murder mystery lovers!

Thank you NetGalley, Kate Young and Crooked Lane Books for an advanced copy of this suspenseful novel in exchange for an honest review.

What better time than Halloween to dig into a bracing discussion of the diabolical murder mystery for the Jane Doe Book Club than Agatha Christie's Crooked House? Lyla Moody and her friends are debating over whether the heroine's actions are particularly believable and then sleepy Sweet Mountain, Georgia, is rocked by a murder that uncannily echoes the novel in question. When Lyla and her grandmother arrive at the charity event that Lyla's mother is hosting, they barely have time to hang up their fall jackets before they stumble upon a body in the library. Leonard Richardson, it seems, was robbed and then hit over the head with a brass candlestick--which throws suspicion on Harper Richardson, his young widow and a friend of the Jane Does. Lyla and the rest of the Jane Does work to clear Harper's name. Peculiarly, all of the clues seem to have been lifted directly from the plot of Crooked House. But as Lyla probes the pages of Christie's classic mystery for hints on catching the killer, she uncovers secrets from her mother's past that answers some questions she has about her mother.

I so enjoyed the first book in this series so was delighted when NetGalley and the publisher gave me the opportunity to read the second one in this new series. The author continues to develop the main characters with some backstory in this installment of Lyla and Uncle Calvin's background. I highly recommend both books in this series.

I honestly thought the first book in the Jane Doe Book Club Mystery Series was outstanding and could not be beat, but I was definitely wrong! Reading Between the Crimes had my attention from page one! In this second installment, the beautiful town of Sweet Mountain, Georgia, is rocked by a murder that has taken place at the Moody's residence during a charitable function. Not only is it at our favorite private investigator, Lyla's parents home, in attendence is the Chief of police, Quinn Daniels. When Gran and Lyla discover the body, the questions begin as to why no one witnessed anything strange. Lyla soon begins to have questions of her own when a stranger in town begins to implicate Lyla's mother and her uncle Calvin. What does the past have to do with Leonard's murder? One of the most prominent families in Sweet Mountain is under scrutiny and Lyla may not like the outcome! What happened years before to cause such fear and hatred in her mother and uncle? I cannot recommend this magnificent novel enough! Lyla is a wonder woman, in my opinion! She is not the typical, scream and faint, female that you find in alot of mysteries. The Jane Does are a tight knit group of ladies who take care of each other when it's needed and that includes Gran, Lyla's grandmother! She loves a good mystery and tends to be a real "go getter". I am already anxious to see what the next novel in this series will bring about! Author Kate Young has written a best selling series that I hope will continue for a long time! Thank you NetGalley and Author Kate Young for my gifted copy in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are truly my own!

Cozy and fun mystery. Great book with some twist and turns. Definitely recommend this book. You will love it like I did! Didn't want it to end!

Ooh boy. This book was definitely one of those books where they seem to up the stakes from the previous book and considering the first in this series plots, wow. I absolutely loved the fun ride with Lyla Moody and her adventures as a private investigator (trainee?) but this one hit close to home. And when I mean home, I mean her parents home, her childhood home. A murder takes place inside her parents' new library addition while a charity function is in full swing. No one hears or suspects anything. Lyla and her Grandmother stumble upon the body by chance and things only become weirder after that. I had a fun time with this book. Before reading this, I went ahead and read the first (audio and ebook) to make sure I didn't miss anything. But honestly, this book can be read as a standalone easily, which was definitely clever for anyone jumping in later. I'm happy to have read both though as this was a nice paced cozy thriller of a book. My brain kept jumping to Stephanie Plum (Janet Evanovich's book series) mixed with a Southern Twist.

Thank you so much to the author, publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to review this ARC with an honest review!

I hope to read more from this author!

I can sum up this book in one word: WOW.

I loved the first book in the Jane Does series and I was so excited to get this one. Let me tell you, it did NOT disappoint. This is maybe one of only a handful of cozies I can remember that kept me on the edge of my seat toward the end. I stayed up way too late finishing the book because I had to know how it ended.

Lyla Moody is stepping up her game at her Uncle's PI agency. When her friend Harper alludes to trouble at home with a controlling husband, she wants to be there for her and possibly help her out. Then Harper tells her the story of her missing aunt and Lyla's PI hackles are raised. Cut to the murder of Harper's husband at one of Lyla's mothers swanky fundraisers, in her own home, and Lyla jumps in with both feet to help save her family's name and her friend.

This book took a lot of dark twists and turns and the ending had me nearly fall off my bed with surprise. Nothing is what you get at face value in this book. The Does are reading a Christie murder at the beginning of the story and I do think Ms. Young did Dame Agatha proud with her own twist on Crooked House.

There is some swearing in this book that may bother some cozy readers. I personally didn't mind it as when it was used, it seemed appropriate for the situation. I strongly recommend this book and I do hope there will be more to follow in this series.

Reading Between the Crimes is the second book in the Jane Doe Book Club Mystery. I have read the first book in the series but I can surely say that anyone who hasn't will not find it difficult to follow. Besides the Jane Doe Book Club run by the main protagonist and true crime enthusiast Lyla Moody and her friends, her job working in her uncle's private investigating firm and her tackling the cold Jane Doe cases , there is not much to connect with the previous book--it even took me a moment to recall the plot of the first book. A couple of years have passed between the two books and Lyla even has a new boyfriend. There is yet again a murder and this time it takes place in Lyla's parents home during a fundraising event hosted by her mother. The victim is the husband of Harper Richardson who is a newish, albeit temporary member of the Jane Doe Book Club and the suspicion falls on her. Lyla and the remaining book club members set out to prove Harper's innocence but doing so threatens to bring forth to light a secret about Lyla's mother and uncle's true origins... a secret that can be very damaging for the whole Moody family.

Since Lyla is also investigating  the Jane Doe cold cases, it would be nice if the author makes a few of those cases the main focus (or connect them in some way) in future plotlines instead of just a vague reference to them. Overall, I liked this book as well and let's see what the author has in store for the series.

My thanks to NetGalley, the publisher Crooked Lane Books and the author Kate Young for the e-Arc of the book.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐✨💫

Reading Between the Crimes by Kate Young
The Jane Does book club is back!!!! This time they are caught up in the middle of the investigation. The investigation centers around one of their own, Harper Richardson. When Harper’s husband, Leonard Richardson, is found dead at a party attended by who’s who in Sweet Mountain, the town is shocked. Within days, Harper is arrested for the heinous crime to the dismay of her friends and the delight of Leonard’s family. And who is the odd man Charles who seems to be everywhere and seems to know a little too much about everyone?
Everyone and everything are not as they seem. Long ago secrets are starting the surface and things are getting odd quickly. Be careful who you trust, you might just end up dead!!!!
Curl up and enjoy this great who-dun-it!!!!

This was a fun and very twisty plot. Lyla's folks are hosting a fundraiser. Lyla and her Grandmother attend. While there Lyla wants to see her father's new library. What a shock, there is a body in the library. It is Leonard Richardson. He is the husband of an acquaintance, Harper. Harper is several years younger than Leonard.

The police come and talk to everyone. With the murder committed in her parents house, she wants to figure out who "dunnit". The murder has sent her mother into a tail-spin. Usually she is very put-together and sophisticated, but being questioned has shaken her.

Lyla and the Jane Does (her mystery book club) on hot on the trail. Could it be Leonard's very young wife who may have been abused, his son, his daughter, brother, sister, etc. So many people to investigate. Also a stranger in town is leaving her clues about her mother's past.

There are lots of twists in this book and you finally understand about her mother and her "issues". The characters are fun and this mystery had me guessing. What a surprise at the end.

The Jane Does are back. Lyla accidentally stumbles across a dead body at her parents house. Lyla has no idea she has been strung along. Family secrets are finally answered in this book. Nice book series.

“Reading Between the Crimes” by Kate Young this is the 2nd instalment in the "A Jane Doe Book Club Mystery" series. OMG! I really enjoyed this story and think I liked even better than book one! This has become one of my favourite series!

I found myself engrossed in the story and wanting to read in one sitting. It was suspenseful, and had me on the edge of my seat. It was still a cozy but had elements of a thriller/suspense novel that you don’t normally find in cozies, but with that said it had just the right mixture of everything.

I totally love the Jane Doe Book Club and I wish I could have a club like that here at home. I liked how Lyla, Mel and Amelia have each other’s backs and I love the budding relationship with Brad and Lyla.

This go around we are more focused on Harper and the murder of her husband as well as the secrets Lylas mum has been keeping. The mystery was interesting, well plotted, and full of twists and turns as well as a few surprises that kept me on the edge of my seat.

I am so looking forward to seeing more in this series as well as in Kate’s other series the “Marygene Brown Mysteries”

I highly recommend this series to all my mystery loving friends.

I requested and received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from Crooked Lane Books and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my OWN.

The second Jane Doe Book Club Mystery reads more like a riveting thriller than an engaging cozy mystery.

Lyla Moody, a PI who works with her uncle at Cousins Investigative Services, overhears Harper Richardson arguing with someone on the phone in the library.
Harper occasionally attends the Jane Doe Book Club meetings, and when Lyla engages her, Harper mentions Lyla’s grandmother has a few overdue books that need returning. After a bit more conversation, Harper asks Lyla how she would find someone – it seems her aunt is missing.

After the book club meeting, Lyla takes her grandmother home with plans to retrieve the delinquent books. When they arrive at Lyla’s parents’ home, they find Frances Moody’s fundraising event still going strong. Lyla and Gran head out to preview the work on the new library and discover the body of Leonard Richardson, dead.

Harper swears she did not murder her husband. However, Lyla and her mother want to help when the police arrest her for his murder. Charles Hammond, a writer and new to the area, seems to be stalking Lyla and her family, asking Lyla what she knows about her family’s secrets. Leonard Richardson’s family – son, daughter, sister, brother, and two cousins – all live in the house with Leonard and Harper.

Kate Young writes a complex story with intriguing misdirection and red herrings. The unexpected rules as Ms. Young builds suspense, carefully revealing a little more, then a little more, all at a relentless pace. This book is hard to put down. An impressive storyteller, the author’s well-developed plot relies on her carefully drawn characters working through compelling situations. Reading Between the Crimes is a gem of a thriller.
