Thank you to HarperCollins and NetGalley for this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Twelve is training to be a Hunter, protectors of Ember. She has given up her name, her clan, her identity, along with the other huntlings. Twelve carries a lot of anger, alienating the other huntlings who train with her, all except Seven. When Seven is kidnapped by goblins, Twelve takes it upon herself to find her. She is soon joined, reluctantly, by the Guardian, a magical stone dog who protects the Hunting Lodge, and two boys Five and Six. Their trek is fraught with danger and the huntlings must gather up all the courage and skills they possess to make it through.
Hard to believe that this is a debut novel by Fowler! It is very fast-paced with a lot of action, suspense, and heart-rending memories. The ending sets up the sequel – it apparently will be a trilogy. This is a great MG fantasy thrill ride! I would definitely recommend this title for grades 4 and up.

This is a solid adventure story. I was instantly drawn in by the mysteries and the quest. Twelve's friendships (and lack thereof) drive the story forward. You quickly care about about everyone in this story and how they all came to be in this monastery. There is adventure, excitement, friendships, epic quest, and even a dose of quick turn betrayal. Easy to recommend. Looking forward to the next volume.

This is a nice all around fantasy about grief, friendship, and learning to forgive all while fighting monsters and goblin mages. I enjoyed Twelve's adventure and look forward to seeing her next adventures.

Fireborn is a wonderful epic fantasy suitable for middle school readers and right up to adults who love the genre! Fireborn introduces Twelve, who has given up her name and clan to train and fight - to defend all clans in her country against the monsters of Ember. But Twelves ulterior motive keeps her isolated and alone...mostly. Twelve's journey as her home is attacked and the choices she makes helps her learn more about herself, her values, and the true meaning of friendship. This is a creative and well built world which will draw you in and leave you wanting more!
