Originally published almost 60 years ago in 1962, this book might appear to offer little to the reader in 2021. Much additional information has been published during the intervening years, most notably, the role played by ULTRA intelligence in both interdicting Rommel’s military supplies, especially fuel, and in giving Montgomery insights into the Axis forces facing him. However, this book provides the perspective that only one who served in the Eighth Army during the famous battle can bring to the account. In addition to his own personal experience, the author’s ability to interview other participants, or read their accounts with the ability to see the bigger picture, means that the reader is almost transported to the sands of the Western Desert amid the chaos and confusion that characterises the battlefield. His accounts of manoeuvre and engagement from small group to corps level capture the reality of the detailed preparations and intense encounters between opposing forces.
Whilst the writing is perhaps inevitably characteristic of the somewhat chauvinistic perspective of one who participated in this significant Allied victory, it pulls no punches in acknowledging some of the significant mistakes and missteps on the Allied side that often led to costly loss of life.
Modern historians are perhaps more critical of Monty, and the book is best seen as one of the few descriptions of the battle that truly reveals the grim and heroic reality of the bald statements in less detailed accounts that cover an action in such phrases as ‘The Rifle Brigade were badly mauled in their encounter with armour but gave a good account of themselves.’ Highly recommended.

An outstanding documentary of the battle and actions taken by both sides. The author does an tremendous job of capturing the main combatants and the small group actions that took place. This book really helped me to understand the pivotal battle in the Middle East. A must read for the fan of WW2 battles.

Thank you to #NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
