This book tells the story of Suzie, a young widow who is having trouble coming to terms with her loss. She has withdrawn from life and has minimal contact with her family. Owning a ground floor flat, Suzie becomes fixated with the new tenant in the flat above her. Emily, the tenant, is lively, plays loud music and every sound can be heard in Suzie's flat.
One day Emily doesn't come home and Suzie becomes obsessed with finding her, believing that something bad may have happened to her.
The chapters are alternated with Emily's back story, which shows that Emily's life hasn't always been such fun.
This is a good story but for some reason it felt a little flat to me. The reveal of back stories was very slow and carried on throughout the whole book so there was little time left for tension or drama.
I am grateful for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Emily has gone missing and nobody seems to be worried about it, except for her downstairs neighbour who has gotten to know Emily from afar, but nobody can be trusted, can Emily be saved?

This was a great read that kept me up at night as I wanted to know what had happened to Emily and why.

The story was very different to what I expected. I was under the impression that this would be a bit of a nail biter but found it was more of a domestic drama and a very emotional read.
I did guess the route the plot would take fairly early on, however this wasn't an issue as I read on intrigued to how this would tie in.
I thought the characters were very difficult to connect with or like. Whilst this worked well for Suzie's character suffering deep depression it was also a challenge to really put yourself in her shoes.
I did find the circumstances and build up intriguing, however I felt it lacked the tension needed to make it a thriller. I never felt that Suzie was in any real danger despite the circumstances.
All in all, an incredibly sad story. I liked that the ending matched the plot though and that the author didn't wrap it up with a 'happy ever after'.
Thabkyou to Netgalley, Georgina Lees and Harper Colins for the ARC copy.

The Girl Upstairs starts off with slow suspense and just builds up from there - I couldn't stop reading because I wanted to find out what happened!

Never judge a book by its cover is the moral of this story, amazing book. So well written, a real page turner! I loved the way the secrets of the characters were revealed, the suspense that was built throughout was brilliant.

Found it difficult to get into from the start as appeared to dwell too long on Suzie and her noisy neighbour Emily. However did persevere but did find the storyline too predictable.

The storyline started out decent but slowly fizzled and the story became boring mid-way through the book. I did complete the book but I can't say I really enjoy reading it.

I had high hopes because it seemed like a fun, twisty book but it was not that. It tried to imitate a lot of the popular thriller writers and failed. The narrative was clunky and you could tell the author had an agenda to create a -- gone girl-- type book. The pace was slow, the story was terrible and I did not care for the characters.

What can I say about this book? It was a bit slow at the start and i found it quite difficult to concentrate on it, but the second half really picks up. Especially when the chapters from the point of view of Emily start. There was a twist in this book which I did spot quite early on. Overall I did enjoy it once it got going. The narrator I found a little bit boring at times, but I did enjoy the mystery and whodunnit element of it. And I love the constant question of "where is Emily?"

Suzie lives alone on the bottom level of a flat in London, her upstairs neighbor is a girl named Emily. Suzie doesn't know Emily at all, but she can hear every single thing that goes on in Emily's flat. Not just that, she also knows Emily's favorite wine, what she eats each day, as well as when she has sex. Creepy much? So when Emily suddenly goes missing, Suzie takes it upon herself to find out what happened to her.
Suzie comes off as a weirdo at the beginning of the book and you almost wonder if she did something. Then you learn more about her and the trauma she has been through and you start to feel sorry for her, but she's a bit obsessed with Emily. The police come off as absolute idiots, they literally do nothing.
Most of the story is told from Suzie's perspective, but we do get a bit of Emily's too, which honestly I preferred.
This book had so much potential but was just written horribly. The ending was ridiculous, I will say, you do find out what happened to Emily, so it doesn't leave you hanging, but it falls flat and you're asking, "what the hell just happened?"
I felt as if I'd been led on a wild goose chase and the result was completely opposite of what I'd been reading. This would have been fine if the ending had been something completely jaw dropping, but it was underwhelming. You're left with a bunch of questions about everything that you read because it seems like all of that just doesn't matter anymore.
I would have given this book 3 stars if I hadn't felt like my time was wasted reading the whole book for no reason.

Thank you to Netgalley and Harper Collins UK for the ARC of this book.

This book was just ok for me- kind of slow, and there was nothing to make it stand out from other psychological thrillers that were better. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free copy in exchange for review.

This was so good and written with such powerful emotion. I really liked the main character/narrator. She was so likeable because she was real and raw. It was almost like she had to trust us, the readers, before she could share her painful secret. I was really invested in her story.
There were so many little twists. Highly recommend this one!

Good but predictable story of Suzie, who's upstairs neighbour Emily goes missing. Suzie takes it upon herself to find her, whilst dealing with some personal issues.
There are only a few characters in the plot and therefore I saw this ending coming from a mile off. Not quite the psychological thriller it's been billed, but a quick, good read all the same.

The Girl Upstairs by Georgina Lees is ultimately a quick read, although I found the overall pacing of the novel to be a bit slow. This is billed as a twisty psychological thriller for fans of Lisa Jewell and, admittedly, that is what initially drew me to it. Unfortunately, while it is an enjoyable read, it failed to live up to the comparison.

Suzie lives in the flat below Emily and, hearing all of the other woman's comings and goings, feels like she knows her as well as anyone. When Emily goes missing, Suzie believes that she alone can save the neighbour she knows far too well.

While I wasn't gripped by this story in quite the way that I had hoped, it is a strong, solid read, and I will be following Ms Lees' writing in the future, of that I am certain. 3.5 stars

Many thanks to NetGalley and HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter for an ARC.

Such a good book! The story was enjoyable - Super twisted and will definitely keep you up at night! A psychological thriller that makes you keep thinking, "what's going to happen next?" On another note, this book is pretty sad and it touches mental health and depression. This book was well-written with good development of characters. The answer to your questions are pretty laid out, but you still want to know what happens. The ending was kind of rough, though, as it still left some questions as to what motivated the characters to do such actions, but nevertheless, a good book!

Suzie lives in the flat under Emily. Emily is loud and Suzie can hear everything. Suzie just wants peace and quiet. She's struggling with past events so when all is quiet from Emily's flat Suzie is quick to discover why.

This is a slow burn read. I did question the actions of Suzie. I know if I had the neighbour from hell I would be pleased they had gone. It does pick up about halfway so worth a read if you enjoy slow burn twisty suspense thrillers.

The Girl Upstairs is a thriller in which a woman who is very isolated looks into the disappearance of her upstairs neighbor.

I thought the author was very clever in weaving in the character’s pasts with the present.

I enjoyed reading about why this disappearance intrigued the main character so much and the steps she went through to discover what happened to her.

Very good book, would recommend.

Enjoyed this book thoroughly. The story came together well and the plot played brilliantly. A real page turner. The author has done well to portray the feelings of the characters and really make you feel what they do.

The twists! The turns! Such a great story. I thought it was going to go one way but then it did a total 180 on me and I loved it. A must read for mystery lovers.

I was lucky to receive an advance copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review and opinion. This is a tough review for me to write as I didn't love or hate this book and I can honestly say it just might have been my mood the day I read it. I found it harder to read as I felt it was "sad" and right now there is so much sadness in the world. I will say it was a fast paced and I'm glad I read it. I will for sure give this author another chance with her next book.
