An “obituary” for countries that no longer exist, for reasons ranging from war, hostile takeovers by other power hungry countries or just citizens who no longer care. Each country gets a personal and snarky history in this humorous and enlightening book

My thanks to Gideon Defoe, Europa Compass/Editions and Netgalley.
This book was an immediate "get" for me. I have this weird thing with maps. I want to know all past and present countries and their placement. How they got there and why. I have maps all over my bedroom walls and ceiling. I enjoyed the heck out of this book. The author also has a dry wit, that made for easy reading.

Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of An Atlas of Extinct Countries.

This is a hilarious and amusingly written atlas of 48 nations that fell off the map. The author is succinct and sarcastic, blunt and honest about the reasons behind why countries die. Violence. Politics. Bad luck.

But the main reason I've noticed are due to con men with delusions of grandeur. Or just delusions.

I enjoyed the illustrations though they don't come through as well on a Kindle it helped to visualize where these countries once existed.

I also liked the side note on flags too, in the end.

I'd recommend this to all nonfiction readers and also to those looking for something interesting to read and learn from.
