I think Chloe gong’s writing is constantly improving but the book just didn’t grab me in the way I was expecting.

Our Violent Ends by Chloe Gong, was one of my most anticipated sequels. it picks right back up after the first book; These Violent Delights and it was everything i wanted in a book and sequel. There was incredible action, politics, and intense heart stopping moments. Chloe Gong's writing is phenomenal, absolutely. Every scene she wrote was captivating and left me wanting more.

The characters are perfection. total bad asses yet vulnerable and deeply layered. the love and relationship between Juliette and Roman is completely gold. their interactions are so nature and there is constant passion in their interactions. I also will never will also never get over how wholesome Benedict and Marshall are.

Overall, this book filled with violence, and romance, pain, vulnerability, anger, love, and found-family. It was an unforgettable story.

Shanghai 1927: Juliette Cai sacrificed her relationship with Roma Montagov to save him from the Scarlets. Roma is mourning the death of his friend Marshall, who he thinks Juliette killed, while his cousin Benedikt is also mourning his best friend. However, the monstrous virus they thought they had vanquished has now returned. There are threats of civil war from the Nationalists and Communists who are rising in the city. Roma and Juliette must try to put aside their differences to reunite and protect the city they love, while figuring out if they still love each other.

It’s been three years since I read These Violent Delights, so it was a little difficult to get back into this fantasy world. There are a lot of characters who each had their own point of view, even though some of them were brief. I love the Shakespearean elements of the story. There were many nods to Romeo and Juliet, though the story deviated from most of that play. After finishing this one, I’m so excited to read Foul Lady Fortune, which is a continuation, focusing on different characters.

Our Violent Ends is a great ending to this duology!

Such a good read, I didn’t want it to end!

As an avid Shakespeare fan, I love how Gong manages to insert quotes motifs and passages from Romeo and Juliet seamlessly. It’s so nice to read a retelling from an author who demonstrates genuine love for the ‘original’ work and wants to utilize the best parts while also putting their own spin on them. I adored seeing the “what’s in a name” conversation in this book for example. I never feel taken out of the narrative by these moments. Overall, Gong has created a captivating world and narrative that unravels in such a satisfying way.

Cannot wait to read more of her work in the future.

I love Chloe Gong's mind. This series is so good and I was on the edge of my seat during the whole ride. I appreciate all that Gong tackles in her story and admire how realistic her characters are. I should've expected the twist ending as well but she took me by surprise! I can't wait to read everything she writes.

A glorious conclusion to this duology. A little slow to start in the beginning but once I got into it, I couldn’t put it down. Chloe Gong has a way to make you feel things (mostly heartbreak). If you liked the Shadowhunter chronicles, then this will be perfect for you.

If you like historical fiction novels with a hint of fantasy then this duology is for you. I thoroughly enjoyed this conclusion to the These Violent Delights duology. I like how open ended the ending was, there are so many possibilities for Roma and Juliette if we all just use our imaginations.

I look forward to reading more of Chloe Gong's books in the future.

This book was a delight to read! I’m still figuring out this platform so I read and reviewed this a while ago, but I enjoyed the pacing and plot development of this much more than the first book.

I love this book and this duology. I would sell my organs to read every Chloe Gong book early! I loved Roma and Juliet. Did I know how it was going to end? Obviously. Did I cry a LOT? Yes. Yes, I did

This book took me awhile to read once I started. I blame this on the fact I knew this book would emotionally wreck me in ways I wasn't ready. To have a Romeo and Juliet retelling, you automatically assume the ending is going to be an emotional one. All I have to say to that is WOW!

This book was perfectly done and a perfect conclusion to a duology. The plot twists were surprising and placed in just the right places. I audibly gasped at a couple of them. This was definitely a book that while you could guess how it would end I wasn't able to guess a single plot twist. It almost seemed like the story was going to be a basic cut and dry right to the point type of ending. That was indeed not the case.

The characters had a ton of growth in this book. While they were still pretty childish/selfish they slowly started to make slightly smarter or more logical decisions. The impulsive nature remained; this in my opinion definitely helped fuel the plot line. We got to see more of the side characters from the first book and what they were actually like. Celia and Marshall turned out to be a couple of my favorites, in this book we were shown their personalities rather than just told.

The plot in this book was intricate and intriguing but also not hard to follow. While it took me awhile to read, this was not due to the plot. This book was not going anywhere near where I initially thought it would. If I'm going to be completely honest at the beginning, I thought it was going to be a repeat of book one. While some things were similar, this book handed us some much heavier topics to deal with. They were also handled in a decent manner considering what the novel is mainly about.

Overall I would highly recommend this duology. I haven't been reading much YA recently but this series made me realize how much I love YA. 5/5 Recommend, especially for fantasy beginners or people who just generally like retellings. I will definitely be following this author and her works, definitely an author I would read more from.

This book was incredible. I honestly had no idea what to expect going in. And much like Roma and Juliette, I was just thinking about the monsters. But there is so much more going on underneath everything. You all know how much I love politics. We only get to see a little glimpse of it in TVD. But this book really takes a different approach and centres around the tensions between the Nationalists and the Communists. We see the Scarlets and White Flowers breaking down, losing power and control, not just among their members, but amongst the people of Shanghai. And we see the ways people in power will do whatever it takes to keep a place in the hierarchy.

This book was really well written. Every word had me gripping the pages of the book. I didn't want to put it down. But what really sold me was the relationships. Enemies to lovers to enemies to lovers done so well I could cry. It was believable. The tension was palpable. The pain... It was perfect. I loved seeing more of Marshall and Benedict especially. But I think my favourite character was Kathleen. We get to see so much more of her, and I'm really excited to see what she does next, especially after that ending.

I think this was a perfect Romeo and Juliet retelling. The setting, the characters, the political tensions and backdrop. We got some of the iconic scenes from the play, but with a little twist. The ending to me was well done. It's bittersweet in a way, but also hopeful. And it's a perfect ode to the actual play.

Overall 4.5/5 stars.

This is one of my favourite books of the year! So well written and I loved all of the character. The ending was perfect! It took such a brilliant and original take on such a classic and well know story.

If you thought THESE VIOLENT DELIGHTS was incredible, then Book 2 is going to blow you out of the water. I'm incredibly lucky in that I am one of the first people to read an early copy of this book, and I genuinely treasure this experience beyond words. I can't wait for everyone to read this masterpiece. I am in such awe of this book and am certain all of these characters will live in my heart long beyond the completion of this story.

This was one of those books that even though you know what’s coming, it doesn’t stop it from hurting any less. OVE was a stunning and heartbreaking conclusion to this duology and if you have not read these books yet, I don’t know what you’re waiting for.

After the events of These Violent Delights, I was hesitant going into the sequel – would the mystery and action feel repetitive? Would the romantic stakes be as high?

Having read Our Violent Ends, I can say with confidence that it's EVEN BETTER than the first book. Alongside the vivid, beautiful writing, the plot is just as fast-paced and interesting as the first book. Our Violent Ends is a devastating yet satisfying conclusion to this unique, skillfully-told reimagining of Shakespeare's classic tale.

Not to be dramatic, but if I thought these violent delights was good oh boy was I in for a treat with our violent ends....

There is a foreboding atmosphere throughout the entirety of the novel that amplifies the readers emotions compelling them to continue, will these characters really have a violent end? That was the gripping question and although I won't reveal any spoilers it's safe to say that it is well named (quite literally)

The supporting characters also had a large role in this text and one that was exciting and I felt intimately connected to them like my own little found family.

The plot twists were well done and the subplots of the revolution were genuinely interesting. Chloe did an amazing job of this.

Reading these two stories was so fantastic! I loved diving back into this world with the short story, of seeing that time before everything went wrong, and then coming back to just after book 1 ended! The rest of this series was just fantastic to read!

A RomaJuliette Christmas Special, oh, was it so bittersweet! I knew that things would go terribly wrong, because of her Nurse, and then his mom. But this is before that, when they were a little young and naïve, and in love, and that was the part that was sweet!

I was pretty desperate for Our Violent Ends. There was the whole thing with Paul having left a "in the event of my death" note which I was so excited to see play out! And then there was Roma and Juliette's relationship, given that he thinks she killed Marshall. But oh, were the politics causing a lot of problems!

As things started to intensify, I started to get worried, because the stakes were mounting as the people became angry, and scared. But oh, did that ending hit hard! Absolutely loved it, and how everything turned out-that epilogue, man, that was something else!

I loved reading these, and I'm so excited to see what Chloe Gong writes next!
