Wow! I'll admit that this book started off very strange and a bit confusing and I questioned whether I wanted to continue but I'm so glad I did. It's hard to really explain this book other than be prepared to get drawn in! Ted is one strange guy and have a cat as a narrator is unusual but fit this story perfectly. I really, really enjoyed this one!

Not going to lie at first I wasn't too sure about this book, but this is a perfect example of an instance where I am so glad I pushed through. I ended up absolutely loving the world that the author created and I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that I did not predict half of the twists and turns that this book ended up taking. I am a bit of a chicken so I found bits to be a little scarier than expected, but that is totally not a bad thing. I loved the slow unravel of the truth and how everything seemed to play out. I loved the different pov's and narrators and thought that they truly added an extra layer to the story. I totally thought that this was a deliciously dark book that kept me wanting more. There are topics of child neglect that do come up that is hard to read, but I do think that the author was careful and didn't overdo past what is needed for the plot. I thought that this was overall a great read.

This was terrifying, yet so good. The narration added a sense of spooky ambiance that made me rushing to turn on the lights when listening to this at night... if you're looking for a great and spooky story, pick this up.

Content Warning: child abuse, animal harm, death, abduction

This twisty tale is told from the perspectives of Ted, Olivia the Cat, and Dee. Eleven years ago, Dee’s little sister LuLu disappeared without a trace. Can Dee find out what happened to LuLu before it's too late? Does Ted hold the answer? Catriona Ward’s creepy story kept me guessing - when I thought I figured out what was happening, BOOM! Twist. It's everything you could want in a psychological thriller AND MORE.
The audiobook narrator, Christopher Ragland, was incredible! He differentiated so well between the various characters that I thought there were multiple narrators for a bit. The different personalities of each character came through in his narration, making this one of the better audiobooks I’ve listened to in a while.

Content warning: child abuse, one instance of animal death at the very beginning

Holy expletive Batman! This book was so amazingly well written, it blew me away. I knew going in based on the synopsis that things wouldn't be what they seem, but the level of twists that Ward put in there are unlike anything else I've read, I swear. There's so much to it that I can't say very much without giving it away, so I'll take a page from other reviews I've seen:

Ted lives in a house on Needless Street with his daughter, Lauren and his cat, Olivia. Things are weird from the start, and you may think you know what's going on, but odds are good that you have no idea.

I'll be honest - when I first started the book, it was so strange and threw me so off kilter I thought there was no way I was going to like it. But I grew used to the strangeness of it all and settled in for the ride and I'm so glad I did. This will hands down go on my list of most memorable books.

Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an audio ARC!

Wow. I don’t know how to describe this book. There is so much to it and I don’t want to give anything away. What I will say is that this book has layers. You are constantly trying to figure out what is really going on. Which I love. Yes, I was very confused at parts but I’m ok with that. If that bugs you then don’t read this.

There are 4 narrators. A man named Ted, his cat Olivia, his daughter Lauren and Dee, a woman whose sister disappeared years ago. If you can be patient and you can handle some dark subject matter then I definitely recommend this. And yes it is dark but it’s not some gruesome horror story. There is more to it than that. A lot more.

Thanks to NetGalley for giving me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book was phenomenal! The Last House on Needless Street was told in a way I had not experienced before and I really loved it. I finished this book last week and am still thinking about it. We follow our main character Ted, a girl, and a religious cat. Ted lives in The Last House on Needless Street. There is so much to this book and it was a page turner and wild ride. This is one of those books that I think the reader should go into mostly "blind", so I won't giveaway much more, but I highly recommend this unique and thrilling book from Catriona Ward!

Told in alternating POVs between Ted, his daughter Lauren, his cat Olivia (yes, his cat!), and Dee who is looking for her sister’s abductor, this is a twisted tale of what goes on in a house at the end of a normal street.

The beginning of the book gave me Room (by Emma Donoghue) vibes, I can’t exactly put my finger on why, but it most likely has to do with the POVs of Lauren and Olivia.

There were definitely some plot points I did not see coming. I was super engaged with the story the entire time, trying to figure out what was going on. This is a great psychological thriller! The audio was not a full cat narration, but I had to check to make sure. The narrator did a great job giving voices to all the different characters.

This book was an unexpected surprise. I have never read anything like it !! It is hard to describe without giving anything away but I think it is most like a spider weaving a web. It starts out simply by introducing you to an unusual cast of characters, a man named Ted, A young woman Dee whose sister disappeared many years ago, a cat named Olivia and Ted's daughter Lauren. Then slowly truths start to reveal themselves, little by little the story builds. There are so many unexpected twists in this story that sneak up on you slowly instead of the usual in your face shock. Don't get me wrong the twists are shocking but are unveiled by strong character development and amazing story telling. By the time the web has been woven you are left feeling unsettled, raw and a little sad.

I listened to the audiobook which switched narrators and definitely made the story even better. This story had me entranced right away, I wish I could tell you more about this book but I think it is best to go into it blind, experience it for yourself. It is a truly unique, fantastic read.

This review is for the audio version. The narration was very good, but I couldn't get into any of the characters, especially the talking cat. It was quite a departure from my typical read, so I am probably in the minority, but it just didn't work for me.

Thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the opportunity to listen to this audiobook.

Many thanks to NetGalley, Macmillan Tor/Forge and Macmillan Audio for gifting me both a digital and audio ARC of this amazing book by Catriona Ward - 5 stars! Audiobook narration was by Christopher Ragland and he was amazing - added to the creepiness of the story!

This is the story of a serial killer. A stolen child. Revenge. Death. And an ordinary house at the end of an ordinary street. All these things are true. And yet they are all lies... You think you know what's inside the last house on Needless Street. You think you've read this story before. That's where you're wrong. In the dark forest at the end of Needless Street, lies something buried. But it's not what you think..

Typically, I try to give a short synopsis of the book in my own words. However, you need to go into this book as blindly as possible and I was afraid I would give something away that would ruin the reader's experience, so I just copied the publisher's words. This book had me twisted and turned in all the best, creepy ways. I experienced all the emotions - horror, disgust, fear, sadness, hope. Be sure to read the author's afterword to understand the book even further.

Highly recommended!

Big thanks to Fierce Reads and Macmillian Audio for the advanced listeners copy of The Last House on Needless Street. Unfortunately this book just wasn't for me.

The opening scene has animal cruelty and that immediately turns me off to most books. That's not to say that I would give it any less rating due to a personal issue as I only rate critically. I think that the writing style was unique and interesting, It had a very ominous tone and kept my attention. Ted and Olivia made for an interesting pair, with an even more interesting plot twist in regards to them. I think most people who enjoy horror would really like this book. There is a level of intensity and anxiety while listening, the narrator does an excellent job.

I think the issues I have being personal and not critical is what gives me the ability to rate this book 4/5 stars!

Creepy! Also really cool.

A murder mystery book with a cat as some of the POV? Count me in!

The book is something else. I really enjoyed it.

“This is the story of a serial killer. A stolen child. Revenge. Death. And an ordinary house at the end of an ordinary street.

All these things are true. And yet they are all lies...”

I saw this description and said yes! Sign me up. Give me some good mystery. I was sent the audio version and if I’m honest, that may be partially why I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would. Now, don’t get me wrong. Christopher Ragland did a phenomenal job. I mean 5 stars to him. But also, the audio presented this dark, sometimes disturbing story in what seemed like a light and comedic tone. I found the story itself to be confusing because of this conflict and was often bored, especially after I figured out where things were going early on.

This story is presented from four points of view – Ted, his daughter Lauren, A woman named Dee whose little sister was kidnapped nearby years before, and Ted’s talking cat Olivia. Yes, talking cat. There was never a moment that I felt connected to any of these characters. I felt like sometimes the author was trying so hard to set up the big twist that the plot itself was a little lost and in doing that, keeps the reader from really connecting with the characters. Additionally, I think that that initial description may have also played a part. “All these things are true. And yet they are all lies…” I didn’t trust anything from anyone.

Perhaps I’ll try reading a physical copy one day and see if I change my thoughts but for now, I’ll stick with this. From my brief look at other reviews it seems I’m in the minority here but that’s okay. I’m glad other people enjoy it, including Stephen King!

Thank you to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for providing me with a free e-arc in exchange for my honest review. This book is available now in the UK and available September 28, 2021 in the U.S.

There were some parts of this book that I found predictable, and others that I absolutely did not see coming. This book story was incredibly well told. There isn't a whole lot that I can say that wouldn't be a spoiler, but if you enjoy books that are somewhere between a horror novel and a psychological thriller, this is a great choice for you.

My only complaint with the audio version of this book was that at the very beginning, it wasn't always super clear what was happening when the narration changed, but after a few chapters, it started to make sense.

If you don’t read any other part of my review but this, I would be okay. DO NOT READ SPOILERS FOR THIS BOOK. GO INTO IT BLINDLY!

I was able to both read and listen to ARCs of this book and, in complete honesty, I preferred the audio version over the actual reading experience. The narrator did an excellent job distinguishing between the characters’ voices and with the physical reading experience, it did not have the same impact.

When you do pick this book up in any format, stick with it through the end. You may feel the need to not finish this book however, it does come together in the end. Trigger warnings are aplenty in this book. Without giving anything away, I can say that this was not my favorite read of this type of novel.

Overall, I gave the audio format 3.5 crowns and the physical version 3 crowns.

The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward is a strange and disturbing book. We meet Ted, Dee, and Olivia the talking cat who are all connected in a dark mystery.

I consumed this story by audiobook and the narrator perfectly capture the tone. However, due to its harrowing nature, I did put the book down quite a bit. Personally, it was hard to pick it back up and even harder for me to follow the story with every piece of information in mind. However, this isn't a bad thing (I think my headspace wasn't the best for this and that's okay!)! It really is a testament to Catriona Ward's writing on how she can write such a dark story, and to the narrator for helping me feel so immersed in the story.

In short, I think this is a great spooky and dark read. As you unravel each layer of the story, you are sucked deeper until all dots are connected leaving you speechless to the end results. I definitely think it's worth looking at any trigger warnings before reading though!

Whoa. Such a creepy feeling throughout this story. And then, something else entirely.

The story is told through 3 narrators; Ted, Lauren (Ted's daughter), and Olivia (Ted's cat). You read that correctly, Ted's cat. That one took me by surprise, but as I listened to her, I fell right right in. Loved it.

There is little to say about this book without giving too much away, and I definitely felt like I went into it pretty blind, but that was a good thing. I wasn't too sure about the simple dialog of Ted especially, though it made sense, but I set all my reservations aside and let the book take me along. I am so glad I did. I was surprised by all the revelations at the end, as there were many. I had a few guesses that were correct, but not all. The overall feel of the book was very foggy until the end. And that end was very satisfying and sad and sweet all wrapped up together. I really ended up liking the story and the places it took me.

If you enjoy the creepy, psychological suspense stories, then this is a great one. Perfect for the upcoming fall season! Thank you NetGalley and the publishers for this audio ALR. Pick this one up on September 28, just in time for the Halloween season!

This is hard one for me to review because I feel that anything I say will give a hint toward a spoiler.

This was a very weird book so if you love weird books and feeling like "What in the world is going on here exactly?" then this is the book for you! This is a slow burn story....I mean SNAIL slow.... told through three POVs. One of those is a talking cat, and if you know me, you know how much I loved that! :) Olivia the cat was the BEST! I kept waiting for something to happen and kept reading, not really liking what I was reading, but I was determined so I could give an honest review. Then a weird/crazy twist happened and it totally turned me off. This uses one of the plot devises that I HATE (and if you'll be spoiled if I tell you what that is).

I see many like this story and other than hearing from the cat's POV, I don't have anything very good to say about this story. I'm not sure *I* would call this horror but more of a dark psychological thriller. Some gross things do happen so I suppose that's why it received the genre it did.

I listened to the audiobook along with the e-arc and it was fine. Nothing special as far as audio narrators are concerned but fine to listen to.

I did not care for this book at all. It was way too long if this book was cut at the minimum in half then I think it would have been a much better book. I honestly thought this book was about a child predator and by the time I got to the end I disliked all the characters that it wasn't redeeming. And it wasn't creepy horror it was just weird and creepy and made something out to be horrible. I think that if things were written differently it would have been a good story because the last hour or two of the audiobook I really did enjoy. The narration was really good I love how it was read. It flowed pretty well for going back and forth between different points of view.
