Stephanie, a widowed climate scientist, and her teen daughter, Amy, have moved to live on an Island to escape the memories of her husband. Stephanie is an academic, teaching at a university on the Mainland, and has helped write a climate report for the government. This makes her a target for trolls and her comfortable life starts to unravel. Added to this is a potential serial killer, who could also be targeting her.

This is the first book by this author I’ve read. It’s a thriller that calls on quite a few modern themes; climate change, troll farms, doxing, cyber bullying, American Politics, social media. It’s a veritable buzzword bingo. It also goes with the lazy trope that all people adept at tech are weird loners, the stereotypical creepy geek.

It’s an okay written story, it does at times have a lot of techy exposition which brings you out of the story. As well as some clunky passages. I enjoyed the first part of the book, it’s very readable and I was hooked from the start. But I found it overlong and lost interest part way through. It picks up again for the finale. Overall I enjoyed the novel and would look out for other books by this author.

After losing her husband, Stephanie Miller decides that the best thing to do for a fresh start is to move to Whisper Island with her daughter Amy. Her hope for a better future is dashed when she starts to get threatening messages and becomes the target of nasty trolls who start to spread lies about her around the internet. Things take a turn for the worse when her best friend is brutally murdered in her home. Stephanie begins to fear for their lives and worries that something will happen to Amy. Meanwhile the FBI race against time to find a link to what is happening and a cold case of a similar murder. As a storm cuts off the outside world from Whisper Island, can the case be solved before it is too late for Stephanie and Amy?

I absolutely loved this book! The plot was tense and thrilling, and the range of characters was brilliant - at times you have your suspicions about so many of them. The twists and turns and ending were shocking and exciting. Recommended!

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy of the book in return for my honest feedback.

If you’re looking for a thriller with a boxed in feeling this is the one for you. I’m a big fan of this kind of story. I really related to the main character and couldn’t wait to find out the ending.
