Picking up exactly where the first book ended, Betrayal on the Bowery by Kate Belli continues with a new mystery for Daniel and Genevieve set in 1889 in New York City. With settings in the Bowery, a reportedly haunted mansion and the environs of high society, Daniel and Genevieve have not one but two mysteries to solve.

I was clueless as to how the deaths of two young scions of high society and a missing heiress could be related which is great because that is what I like in a mystery. The search for the real killer will take them into darker parts of the City, a haunted and abandoned estate as well as Daniel's past. The relationship between the two is stilted at the beginning but there is still hope for them.

Thanks to NetGally for an ARC copy in return for an honest review.

Interesting mystery but couldn't really stand the characters including the main character. Which is something you need to be able to do if you want to be able to enjoy a mystery. Or at least be able to understand why they are the way they are.

The story starts from where it ended in the first book and progresses through high end and lesser settings of New York City. The descriptions of the places are superb and gives the reader the feel of the atmosphere. The suspense and the investigation are good. The only sore point for me is the dancing about the emotions of Daniel and Genevieve. Hopefully the author brings it around in the next book.

Thanks to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for a digital ARC of this title in exchange for my honest review. I messed up and missed that this was the 2nd book in a series, so some of it I think I would've understood and enjoyed more if I had read the first book-which I am planning to do shortly. That being said, the relationships between the characters is enjoyable and even though I missed the first book, it felt cozy and established. I liked that there wasn't any expectation of will they/won't they-we know that Genevieve and Daniel aren't an item (although I'm sure that there are fans hoping that will change). This was a fun read, and I love any mystery that I can't solve before the detectives/investigators piece it together!

Atmospheric, Gothic. Immersive. All of these are easy words to describe this incredibly enjoyable read. Well written, well plotted, and thoroughly enjoyable read.

Ms. Belli's descriptive writing made me feel as if I was visiting the Bowery and the haunted mansion along with the characters which kept me gripping my ereader in fear for the characters. Action packed with a dramatic resolution as all the puzzle pieces came together for Daniel and Genevieve.

While I feel like the first book of this series floundered, this book is much better! Combining a hefty dose of thriller and horror-esque settings, Betrayal on the Bowery is action packed and the reader will be breathless as the characters escape from death again (and again and again and again). The problematic romance with no happy ending elements of the first book are mostly gone and the New York City setting is a nice touch. Since it appears to be a hallmark of this series that each one ends with the entrance of the next mystery, I am looking forward to book three.

If your a fan of mysteries and historical fiction then this is definitely the book for you. I did actually enjoy the book but it opened my eyes to the fact that outside of certain genres (fantasy, mythology, etc) or specific books I don't really enjoy historical fiction anymore. Which deeply saddens me, but such is life. Despite my disillusionment with historical fiction Betrayal on the Bowery nevertheless managed to engage me and keep me interested. I enjoyed myself and it ended up being a quick read for me. All in all, it is a book I would not hesitate to recommend.

I thoroughly enjoyed Kate Belli's second Genevieve Stewart mystery! This time she and Daniel McCaffery are attempting to save their friend Rupert from a murder charge.. The search for the real killer will take them into darker parts of the City, a haunted and abandoned estate as well as Daniel's past. The relationship between the two is stilted at the beginning but there is still hope for them. I am very much anticipating the next book! Thank you to #NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy of #Betrayal on the Bowery.

This mystery checked all the boxes for me. The gilded setting, a strong woman protagonist, and a dreamy sidekick. It starts off a with a murder on a luxury cruise line which draws our investigators in with how it affects their friends. It took the characters from high society to the bowery and the tribulations that follow.

If you enjoyed the first book in this series, you will definitely enjoy this one. The historical fiction elements and mystery elements blend together so well and create a really enjoyable mystery novel that hooks readers from the beginning and draws them in.

I thoroughly enjoy this historical fiction series, and am very much looking forward to more! Kate Belli has crafted a wonderful heroine in Genevieve - she's confident, curious and willing to do whatever it takes to solve the mystery at hand. I was hooked from the suspicious murder at the top, and applaud the pacing and twisty nature of the storytelling all in service of getting to the bottom of what was happening to the dead young men. I also enjoyed seeing the evolution of Genevieve's relationship with Daniel, and the ambience Belli created, ranging from gilded mansions to the sketchy back alleys of NYC.

Wasn't sure this was a story I'd enjoy. Wow was I wrong! Great plot, fabulous characters, scary settings! Genevieve is strong, smart and caring. Daniel is a determined, brave, tender man. They work so well together! I won't write a spoiler, just read this story. I couldn't put it down...can't wait for their next adventure!

I really enjoyed Deception by Gaslight, the first book in the Gilded Gotham Mysteries series. The mystery was well done and I liked getting to know the main characters Genevieve and Daniel. I’ve been excited for the second book and appreciate receiving a DRC from Netgalley and Crooked Lane Books.

Well it was another stellar outing for Genevieve and Daniel. What struck me in this book was how the mystery they were working on deepened their relationship. And I loved the gothic feel of the story. A supposed haunted and abandoned mansion with ties to the NYC crime world was a perfect mix for my reading mood.

As you may know I love historical fiction stories that feature independent and intelligent female leads. While there were a few moments that I had wished Genevieve had thought things through a little more, overall I loved seeing her hone her sleuthing skills.

If you haven’t read this series, and you enjoy a good mystery with strong side of a developing relationship I’d highly recommend you pick these up!

Second in this series, we are plunged into the two very different worlds of New York City at the turn of the 20th century and what can happen when those two worlds mix. Genevieve and Daniel must again join forces to save their friends as well as a kidnapped socialite. An excellent book I highly recommend. I am now going back to read book 1 - something I seldom do.

I had not read the earlier book, but that did not matter at all. The publisher's blurb is a good hook so there is no need for recap and spoilers are just wrong. Fascinating characters, twisty plot, more red herrings than a fish monger, and a really riveting story. Loved it!

We meet up with Daniel and Genevieve immediately where the first book left off. But this time a death happens on the very ship that Rupert and Esmie are taking on their honeymoon. Daniel and Genevieve are watching the two leave on the ship when they hear Esmie’s scream, thrusting them into a mystery that must be solved. The book leads the two through a wild goose chase, between the murders that occur along with a kidnapping of a wealthy girl. The question is asked - is everything connected and if so, how? This book was a delight to read and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. Brilliant follow up to the author’s debut novel.

I did not realize that this was the second book in a of but that didn't really matter because I was instantly enthralled with the characters and the story. There are not many books, historical mysteries, that really do justice to that time period. I would definitely recommend this series and will be reading the first book in this series. I hope for more intrigue and hopefully more romance. I received an e-book from NetGalley in return for an unbiased review.
