One of the most creative post-apocalyptic stories I have read in a long time, Harrow also boasted some beautiful prose and powerful imagery. I could absolutely see HBO turning this into the next hit mini-series. While Harrow was understandably bleak (as a book that deals with environmental apocalypse and it's aftermath), it also had humor, absurdity, and tons of heart.

Unfortunately, what started out as a synopsis that I found incredibly intriguing and up my ally (as a lover of dark ambiguous dystopian) I think I was perhaps too dumb for this book. I found upon many occasions that although I was reading, taking in words regularly, forming images in my head, I was not retaining or understanding anything. I found the story incredibly difficult to follow, the dialogue and interactions confusing and just plain weird, out of sorts, and befuddling, all of which took away from the reading experience. Again, I think perhaps I was missing some very important pieces of information and deep knowledge of philosophy which is not an area I am particularly experienced in. IDK, I could definitely tell you a little of what happened in these pages but not why, what the purpose was, or what the ultimate stake away or story was. The synopsis should be reworked to more accurately reflect this book. IMO.

I honestly had to DNF this book, I just couldn't get into it. I think it was the prose and how confusing it was from the get-go that made me come to this decision.

This book was interesting, to say the least. I really liked the author’s writing style and the story itself. This story takes place in a post apocalyptic environment and the story surrounds Khristen, a teenager who I really liked. The plot of this book got strange at times, but I enjoyed the strange parts and the way that the author put it together. Overall, I’d give this book a solid 4 stars.

A terrifying, misanthropic and mordantly comic vision of how the earth will end, not with a whimper but with the death of wildlife and the cheerful rejection of notions to save it or act responsibly. Not always clear, but compelling and inventive and packing a huge punch, this is a novel that attacks crucial issues with skill and visionary panache.

I love you Joy Williams! I love that you are still writing fractured teenage girls 40+ years after The Changeling!

Joy Williams is a favorite author of mine but this was my first novel by her. I found it surprising and of course, gorgeously written. An easy but lovey read.
