The Spires by Kate Moretti is a twisty thriller with dual-timelines. Alternating between past and present, the story focuses on a friend group but we primarily follow our main character Penelope. There are some wild twists in this one that will keep you guessing until the very end.

This was an interesting read if not entirely believable. I seem to be reading a lot of books lately about groups of friends living together when they barely even seem to like each other so maybe I’m just being cynical. It was a decent plot and some parts of it kept me guessing until close to the end.

I found this book to be slow paced and the characters unlikeable. I was also confused by it being set in 2020. Unfortunately this book didn’t work for me.

This was a messed up and twisty mystery and it was a great read! I have had this book for two years and I am sorry it took me so long to read it. This one kept you guessing through the entire story as you try and figure out what is actually happening.

Looking forward to reading more of Kate Moretti's books in the future.

I loved this mystery. I could actually see the present day events happening as a mom of 2 kids myself. I was not prepared for the ending. Bravo!

It was a good book. I enjoyed reading it but it was a bit too slow paced for my taste. I had a hard time understanding some of Penelopes decisions, like how she so easily let her former friend she hasn't talked to in twenty years move in while her own personal life is not in a good place. But I did like the ending and I was interested enough to keep reading and I ended up liking it.

This started off slow... Very slow. I was actually tempted to stop reading at one point. Then I checked out the reviews and they all talked about the ending, so i decided to keep going.

I'm glad i did, because it did speed up towards perhaps, the last quarter of the book.

Good story, some parts were predictable but no, not the ending. Good job there.

Another hit from Moretti. A group of misfits called The Spires are brought back together 20 years later. What dark secrets come to light and can it ruin everything you worked for.

An amazing psychological thriller! Penelope’s story kept me engaged and chomping at the bit for more. I did not see any of that coming!

The Spires is an addictive thriller revolving around secrets, lies, and murder and Kate Moretti does a great job in weaving this story.

Twenty years ago, Penelope and four best friends Jack, Bree, Willa, Flynn, and Penelope lived in a house that was once a former church. They called themselves "The Spires”. A fire that led to a devastating tragedy ripped the friends apart.
In the present, Penelope is married with two children, her husband is unemployed and she has a lot going on with her. Things change when one of her former friends, Willa comes back into her life, and in doing so, threatens Penelope’s marriage, friendships, and sanity.

The timeline alternates between the past and the present. The past focuses on the group of friends who lived in the church house and the present told primarily through Penelope’s point of view.

This was a quick and absorbing read which did not disappoint. I was entertained and engrossed throughout.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for sending a digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.

2.5 stars rounded up, but only because the writing wasn't actually that bad.

But this ended up being quite the slog. For a number of reasons (no likeable characters, lack of atmosphere, terrible pacing), I constantly found myself wanting to just skim read through the tedium and get to the reveal so I can find our what happened and be done with it. And man dit that reveal fall flat on its face, with the book's climax following suit only moments later. The only parts I actually semi-enjoyed were the flashbacks to the characters' time in The Spires, but that's probably only because I was purposely reading those parts with dark-academia-tinted glasses (very optimistic of me, really).

Not worth it in the end, although I know some readers will enjoy it nonetheless.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4. This book was slow to start but once I was hooked, I didn’t want to put it down. This was a fun, dramatic thriller involving secrets, lies and murder. Definitely recommend checking it out.

Penelope Cox had left her past behind and was now happily married with two children. One day, her old friend Willa comes knocking on her door seeking refuge. Unfortunately she also brings with her memories of The Spires, a group of five girls (including Penelope and Willa) that lived together decades ago. A fire left The Spires forever changed and apart. Can Penelope really escape her past or does Willa have another plan in mind.

A great psychological thriller and a real page turner. Kate Moretti created a crazy story with lots of twists.

BOOK REVIEW- ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (rounded up to 5 Stars on Goodreads)

My Thoughts: Thank you to @netgalley, @thomasmerceruk, & @katemoretti1 for a copy of this E-arc in exchange for an honest review! I absolutely loved this fast paced thriller and it was just what my reading slump needed! Told in two different time periods we learn about Pips year at The Spires & how it is affecting her current life. I loved all the twists thrown in at the end and the slow burn in the beginning sure changed its pace at the end. This one is out now and can also be found for free if you are a Kindle Unlimited member! ✨

Synopsis: Strung between two teenagers, an unemployed husband, and a tenuous career, Penelope Cox barely has her life together when the past comes knocking at her door. Willa Blaine, her old roommate, needs her help: refuge from an abusive husband. “Two weeks tops,” she says—but it’s not the imposition that bothers Penelope; it’s the memories Willa brings with her.

Twenty years earlier, Penelope, Willa, and three friends lived together in a converted church. Insular and closed off from the rest of the world, the five roommates formed their own dysfunctional family, celebrating the pinnacle of their lives; they called themselves “the Spires.” But nights of wild parties gave way to a darker undercurrent: jealousy, resentment, unrequited love, and obsession. Tensions boiled over during a night of debauchery that ended in a deadly fire, leaving the Spires scattered and forever changed.

Now Willa is the perfect houseguest: accommodating, helpful, bringing a newfound sense of excitement to the Cox household. Yet Penelope can’t help but feel the cracks in her life widen as she begins to question Willa’s motives. Everyone has secrets, it seems—and the fire may have brought down the Spires, but not everything burned was forgotten.

This was a great book! I loved the slow reveal of what happened in the main characters youth that brought the huge rift in their friendship. What a twisted book this turned out to be in the end. Great suspense and character build up.

I really enjoyed this book from beginning to end. There a few moments in the story that seemed to drag a little but the story as a whole flowed nicely. I enjoyed the twist and turns and the characters. The ending a great one which I honestly think made this book enjoyable.
