Another amazing thriller from this author, this was dark and chilling and makes you think about how far you would go to protect someone you love. A gripping plot which I enjoyed from start to finish

The Rule wasn't for me unfortunately. I found it quite slow to get going and didn't really hook on to any element that made me want to keep going.

Had been looking forward to reading this book. Sadly it wasn’t for me. It just lacked a good plot to get you excited and wanting more. It was very slow paced and never picked up

I thought I had discovered David Jackson through reading his brilliant book The Resident, but then realised I had also read Pariah. Both excellent books I would highly recommend to crime readers out there. The Rule is another great read, which I wholeheartedly enjoyed. It did stretch my sense of disbelief at times, but that is a minor criticism in what was a very fun read and one that kept me wanting to find out what would happen right to the end.

Daniel is a 23 year old adult with learning difficulties who had a profound belief in a ficitional characrrr called Adam 9. Not only does Daniel have a childish intellect, but he also possesses immense strength which can harm others if even as so much as touches them, which leads to the rule. He can’t touch others.

One day on their way home they encounter a criminal called Joseph Cobb and during that encounter Daniel breaks the rule and Joseph dies. In the moment, his father who is present with him decides his son can’t be held accountable for his actions in defends so he covers up the crime. This leads to all manner of difficulties with the police and the family of criminals that Joseph had been born into. A very fun and exciting read.

I would like to thank Netgalley for giving me a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Ok. This was probably one of the best book I have read so far . At first I’m not quite sure what getting into the story,I thought I knew already the ending but it wasn’t.
. A story of a father who will do everything for his son and wife. Everything. He is only a normal guy who works in a garage until it changes everything till he started to talk with the small drug clan, even being mugged he roomed but still manage to make a plan to save his sons life.
Daniel has a special needs. He doesn’t lie. So everything that his dad did was out in the open, but the other hand is the detective , Hannah. Who’s been hunted by her daughter , but she manage to save Daniel in all the chaos happen.

.
Ending was amazing, to be honest I felt kike I want to read more. But thennagain of course something need to end . I’m looking forward to read more on this author and I definitely super definitely try the audiobook version . The narrator was amazing! Super 5⭐️ On him too x ( mark oosterveen ) such an amazing voice actor.

Yet another explosive thriller from the authors imagination. A standalone book that delves into the mindset of a man put into a corner in order to save his wife. A man who never strays from the path of truth and honesty. Yet he’s a man on a mission , to save his wife and bring down the bad guys. The action starts from the first page and only gets more intense as the plot unfolds. The tension mounts with every new step the villains make . The character of Jerome comes across as the guy next door who shares his tools with the neighbours ,quiet , unassuming and forgettable. Yet cross him and be dammed because he will find you and hurt you . In fact someone you need when your back is against the wall . If you enjoy the movie franchise Taken then this is the perfect book for you. If you are a fan of all out action thrillers , that pump adrenaline at every full stop then go out and buy it too.

This was such a fast-paced book and I couldn’t stop reading. It was twisted, creepy and dark but also oddly addictive. I just had to know what was going to happen at the end. The author is such a gifted writer who knows how to craft a brilliant story. I will be going to pick up their previous book and look out for more from them in the future!

If there’s one rule to keep in mind when you see a book by David Jackson, it’s this one: GRAB A COPY.

It’s no secret the author impressed me immensely with his previous novel, The Resident. I owe him a fear of attics. When The Rule was announced, my eyes and brain itched to get a copy. Truth be told, I had no idea what to expect. So how did the author manage to surpass my expectations anyway?

A hard and sharp look at society.
I was not prepared for the exploration of a working class neighbourhood with its thugs and ‘friendly neighbours’ (I wonder if Dave has an issue with neighbours…) If The Rule can definitely be categorised as crime fiction, there’s a strong touch of sociology and difficult truths in his newest work. Far from keeping the reader detached from the issues faced by his characters, Mr Jackson puts us at the center to feel the anger, the unfairness, and the despair. What happens when people doing their best hit the lottery of bad luck?

A flawless pace and perfect prose
A family to root for
All Daniel and his parents want is a happy normal life. They stay out of trouble, they pay their bills on time. They stick to The Rule. It is easy to relate to them, in their little apartment, trying to protect Daniel from a ruthless world in which his difference makes him a target. David may be 23 but he has the mind of a child and the strength of superheroes. As long as they keep their heads down and mind their own business, all will be alright…

An accident
Daniel and his father at the wrong place at the wrong time. From there, the author takes the family down a dark road. I am fascinated by how quickly the line from good to bad can disappear and here, you get the perfect example of ‘from bad to worse’. When Daniel kills a man without meaning to, his parents don’t hesitate. Daniel must be protected. Was I shocked by their decision? No. Did I think they were crazy? Who isn’t? No time for labels, I only wanted Daniel to be safe…

Three intense POV
Daniel’s father Scott, Hannah Washington, DI, and Ronan, the deceased’s brother. Their intertwined voices create a powerful narrative that forces you to look at every angle and hope for the best. If the plot hooked me, it was their voices that mesmerised me and kept me going.

Not quite a thriller…
The Rule is not exactly a thriller, more of a noir tale fuelled with good intentions, revenge, and at the heart of it, the seek for justice. It is an intricate and tragically brilliant piece of fiction.

A dark and disturbing crime thriller that asks - how far would you go to protect your child? Daniel is a vulnerable young adult with learning difficulties and Herculean strength. As a consequence, 'The Rule' is no touching. During an altercation with a local violent drug dealer, Daniel accidentally kills him. His parents try to cover up his crime, which leads to more trouble. A clever and compelling paced plot that will keep you gripped.

This was a so so book for me. I felt that the characters were not developed. The one thing that was memorable was how delicate autism was written about. It was beautiful and showed how it affects families.

Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read this arc in exchange for an honest review.

This book is absolutely brilliant. It will stay with you long after you read it too. I really felt for Daniel and his parents. It is a book that from page 1 will grab your attention and demand your attention. I can't wait for more from this writer.

I really enjoyed this book and loved how it was a bit different to your usual crime thriller. I found myself sympathising with the father and wanting a happy ending even though I knew there would be some twists a s turns along the way. It showed what people would do to protect their family and left me wondering if I would do the same.

This is the first book I’ve read from David Jackson and I would certainly read his others as I really enjoyed this well plotted and gripping thriller.

Daniel is almost 23 years old with learning difficulties and possessing a herculean strength. He lives in a block of flats with his mum and dad, Scott and Gemma and is obsessed by his favourite comic book superhero, Adam 9. Due to a past incident Daniel must not break The Rule (no touching other people). When the inevitable happens and Daniel is forced to break The Rule, resulting in a death, his parents, particularly his dad, find themselves in embroiled in a maelstrom of events, forcing them to act entirely out of character and go to extreme lengths to protect their child.

This is certainly a dark thriller, but one with flashes of humour. It has a real heart and several truly emotional moments. The inclusion of DI Hannah Washington’s personal tragedy was superbly handled by the author and you feel immense heartache and sympathy for her.

Daniel was my favourite character; I adored this gentle giant and the author has portrayed him brilliantly. Everything about Daniel was so finely detailed and realistic, absolutely believable. In fact, I thought the terrific characterisation was one of the strengths of this book.

As I followed all the twists and turns, I was left wondering how on earth this would all pan out and I raced towards the end, heart in mouth!

I would like to thank the publisher, Serpent’s Tail/Viper and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I love this author and this was another good read. An original storyline highlighting autism and the massive affects it has on families. It was a little far fetched in places but it didn’t matter as I just wanted to keep on reading to find out what happened!!

⭐⭐⭐⭐ -- Thoroughly enjoyable read.

Wow, was this an entertaining read. I finished all in one go! Outstanding writing. Fast paced. An intriguing, dark, twisted, and often humourous plot. Well developed and likable characters. The star by far being Daniel. So why not 5 stars? I wasn't a huge fan of the Hannah storyline. Or honestly, Hannah's character in general. Her storyline just felt a little wedged into the story. Especially the "Tilly" part. 🤷🏻‍♀️ My other niggle was the ending. Mainly because I wanted it to end differently. However, as the song says, "you can't always get what you want" 😂Even with those issues this was still a cracking good read and gets 👍🏻👍🏻 from yours truly.
