The Maid is a thoroughly enjoyable cosy murder mystery that keeps you feeling warm and fussy.
On par with the current murder mysteries trend like The Thursday Murder Club, there is no wonder why so many people praised about this little gem. I can see if they make a movie out of this.

This is a very interesting book. The protagonist is definitely on the autism scale and she tells the entire story. It s not only a murder mystery, but a true character study, that may make you think about how people in what seem to be menial jobs are treated. I did enjoy this book and look forward to reading more by the author.

The main character, Molly, suffers from social awkwardness and misreads social cues - she is definitely a unique character and, though it took a while for me to connect with her, I came to appreciate her way of thinking. I enjoyed the mystery of the story in addition to the unique character. The twist at the end is unexpected and liked the way it was resolved. The story does reference domestic abuse and the drug trade.

I received a copy of this book courtesy of NetGalley and the author, Nita Prose, as well as and Penguin Random House Canada (Viking) for an ARC in exchange for an honest review..

It’s about a girl who I feel is on the spectrum and a tangled web of murder that she gets caught in. Well written, and the story itself is easy to follow even it changes paces quickly. The plot is quite intriguing. The way Molly sees the world and those around her, how naïve she is, it’s refreshing because she chooses to see positivity in everyone, even if they don’t deserve it!

Fantastic read, read it in less than 24 hours! Absolutely recommend and looking forward to more releases from the author!

Prose’s debut novel definitely puts her on the map! In reading this book, you get your traditional “whodunit” with a surprise twist at the end. I found it very hard to put down, because I just needed to know how it was going to play out for all of the characters.
Molly is a maid at an upstanding hotel, and takes great pride in her work. However, she does not always react to situations the way that many people would expect. This, unfortunately, leads to a slew of misunderstandings when she comes across a well known guest’s body when cleaning his suite. Will she be able to make people believe in her innocence, or are her differences too much for people to understand?

I was very pleasantly surprised to see the main heroine of this book be centred on a character who does not always react stereotypically to events. The book sheds light on this understanding that “we are all the same in different ways”. We all experience the world, but the ways in which we do that are drastically different. This book does a phenomenal job at showing you that what you assume to be the right, or appropriate way to react, or handle situations, may not always be the best.

Loved this SO much! It was so much fun to read. I really enjoyed how this story was laid out and all the characters were so endearing.

The Maid is all over the place at the moment and seems to be a very popular book among bookstagram. While I did thoroughly enjoy the book, with some twists and turns I didn't see coming, a lot of it was very predictable. Molly is an easy to love character, with her quirks and determination, but her quirks are never addressed any further than "she's weird/different", which I found very frustrating. In addition, all of the characters seem to take advantage of Molly because she's different, and I found that very annoying and a cop-out plot point.

The Maid does start off fairly slow, as you get to know the characters and how they all intertwine. The ending of this book is full of twists and satisfaction, which made me round up to 4 stars from 3.5. I do feel a lot of things needed to be addressed in this book that were glossed over, but overall, it was a cozy mystery I would recommend

This book was certainly worth the hype. It would appeal to readers of The Thursday Murder Club and Alan Bradley's Flavia de Luca mysteries. they are all "cozy" mysteries that rely on personality and language as opposed to action. Moly is delightful and I am sure she will be a huge hit.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an electronic copy to read in exchange for an honest review.

I was hooked on this book just from the description. Molly, the maid (yes, really), works in a hotel and comes across one of their guest dead. For the rest of the book we learn who Molly is, her unique characteristics and traits, as well as so much about other hotel employees and guests. As everything is told as Molly perceives it we can see the evolution of the crime in a way that Molly isn't able to. With a small cast of main characters and the hotel setting this reads almost like a locked room mystery. It was so fun to read. A lot of 'Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime' vibes and I was here for it!

I am so looking forward to another novel by the author - hopefully soon!

This was quite a refreshing mystery. Based on other reviews, it’s not a shock that Molly the Maid is giving major Eleanor Oliphant vibes, but I found her much more endearing. The powdered donuts… I laughed out loud. I loved all the twists and turns and enjoyed all the sayings that gran quoted to her. The story also gave me some Where the Crawdads Sing vibes as unexpected parts of the story unfolded. This novel was simply a state of perfection! Definitely recommended for any book clubs. There’s so much to discuss!

Mystery | Adult
<cover image>
Molly Gray is a hotel maid. She is proud of her work, committed to restoring the most disheveled hotel room to pristine cleanliness, or as she calls it, “state of perfection.” She wipes, scrubs, disinfects, vacuums and polishes, finding joy in doing her job as well as she can. She knows her colleagues make fun of her, but as social subleties are a challenge for her, she’s used to it and tries not to let her get under her skin. Routine is her saviour, especially since her beloved Gran died just a few months ago. So when she discovers the body of a regular hotel customer in a room, Molly is flummoxed. She faints, in fact. When the police question her, she struggles to figure out how to answer their questions without annoying them; in no time, she finds herself the focus of close police attention. If she wants to avoid jail, it’s up to Molly to figure out who killed Mr. Black, with the help of those around her, but her ability to know whom to trust is sadly lacking. This is a delightful modern cosy mystery loaded with rascally characters, red herrings, motives galore, and a constant series of twists and turns. There are several reveals at the end, most of them a complete surprise to me, and even one that shoots over Molly’s head. I thoroughly enjoyed this sympathetic, quirky, loyal, and dedicated protagonist and her adventures as maid and detective. The mystery is well plotted, and has a heartwarming ending that satisfies on many levels. It’s reminiscent of the wonderful The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, and as Molly is barely out of high school, it has crossover appeal to teen readers who like mysteries. Local pals can find a copy of this book at the Grand Forks (B.C.) and District Public Library on the adult fiction shelves. If you prefer, you can check it out as an e-book or e-audiobook as well. My thanks to Viking Books for the digital reading copy provided through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

A quick read, a cosy murder mystery with sweet Molly. I knew I would like Molly when she said she had read all her Gran’s Agatha Christie books. So many great quotes and lessons learned from her Gran too. “When you assume, you make an A-S-S out of U and Me.” epages 19.

I am looking for readers that own pajama’s with teapots on them, lol? Thank you to Net Galley for accepting my request for a copy of the book. A budding Canadian author.

Molly is a maid at The Regency Grand Hotel, where her attention to detail and adherence to proper etiquette make her ideally suited to her job, but she is also socially awkward, struggling to read social cues, which has left her isolated and lacking in real friends, especially after the recent death of her beloved Gran. When Molly finds a rich businessman dead in his bed at the hotel she becomes a suspect and needs help to clear her name but who can she really trust?

Molly is a very endearing protagonist and I enjoyed seeing the world from her perspective. I believe from the way she is repeatedly described, we are to assume that Molly is neurodivergent (though this is never actually addressed in the story).
I sped through the book and really, really enjoyed most of it, particularly the relationships between Molly and both Mr Preston and Juan Manuel but unfortunately I didn’t overly love the ending. There were two plot points at the end that, to me, felt totally out of left field and while I do love a good twist, I just felt neither of them were really in keeping with Molly’s character.

The Maid might be being classed as a thriller/mystery but it’s definitely on the lighter, cosier side of the mystery genre, with much more emphasis placed on the characters and their relationships than on the actual mystery itself and so I suspect it might appeal more to a contemporary fiction audience rather than to the hardcore thriller/mystery readers.

I rated this book 3/5 stars. It was a quick and overall enjoyable read. I did sometimes find myself getting frustrated with the characters especially with Molly, although I’m aware she was probably meant to be written that way sometimes. I did really like the hotel setting and there was a few unexpected twists right at the end. I was happy to see Molly get a happy ending.

Holy shirtballz; this was amazing!!!
Molly is the most delightfully addictive character, and the story flows so smoothly.
Fantastic mystery, fabulous characters and wonderful settings.
I could not get enough of this, and cannot wait to read more from Nita Prose.
The hype behind this is 100% accurate.
Much love to NetGalley & Penguin Random House Canada for my DRC.

I've clearly been ruined by dark, psychological thrillers because I kept expecting The Maid to completely descend into madness. What I read instead was a consistently cozy mystery, with characters that gave you just enough of themselves to help you work out whodunnit, or in the case of The Maid, who didn't do it.

Molly Gray, the main character, is very likely neurodivergent, though that was never outright mentioned in the narrative and thus became a sort of a sore spot for me (like, why not just mention it? It's not taboo, for the love of god). So, let's just go with the fact that she was on the spectrum, and while I can't speak on correct representation in terms of that specific learning disability, I will say that the inclusion of that "fact" put an interesting spin on the narrative. I was never sure if I could fully trust Molly or her perspective on events—I personally love a good unreliable narrator, but again, I wish I was certain of the reason for her unreliability, The side characters were fairly one-dimensional, and I can say with complete confidence that I only really loved one of them: the doorman of the hotel Molly worked for,

I probably wouldn't read from this author again, as their narrative style/choice just isn't for me, or what I enjoy, but when my brain stopped expecting the huge twists, I was able to enjoy this specific book a little bit more for what it was.

I ended up listening to this book as an audiobook and it was really well done! The mystery was well-done but I especially loved the social commentary threaded throughout the story & it's a little spoilery but I LOVED that Molly & Giselle clicked based on their similar class backgrounds & that Molly's instinctual care for Giselle wasn't misplaced, that Giselle ended up being a (mostly) good person. I'll be recommending this book a lot this year for mystery readers who love a well-written story and don't want a lot of gore.

This was pretty good! I liked sweet, naive Molly, her Gran and her friends. The story took place in a short span of time, mostly in the hotel and Molly's apartment. The characters were vividly portrayed, with distinct personalities. It was an interesting "behind the scenes" lf hotel housekeeping. Three quarters of the way through the book I thought I had figured out whodunnit but I hadn't and it was a neat surprise. 3.5 stars, rounded up due to the author being a local. Looking forward to the movie!

An absolutely delightful story about Molly the Maid and her adventures at the posh Regency Grand Hotel. Her well mannered, quirky personality makes her a likeable character. The murder mystery is a page turner filled with humour, loyalty and love that we need in todays world. Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this wonderful book. Nina Prose you’re a good egg! Thank you for this heartwarming story.

An interesting and creative read with a hero that frustrates even as you cheer her on. Some of the set up may be a trifle naive but enjoyable.
