Can you imagine being a commodity because of your blood? Annis was bartered into her first marriage and it was a nightmare. She was free, but his family were planning nefarious schemes.
Then she is stolen by a rival clan where she is placed under the care of Rolfe Munro. This can definitely now cause issues between the two stealing clans trying to lay claim and you have the scheming family who want her back.

This is a fantastic book of conniving unscrupulous individuals and there are more surprises you won’t believe popping up! I love how Mary Wine, the author keeps you thinking one way and then she surprises you with the direction she takes the characters thought process! She has written a book that kept me wanting to turn the pages because I was interested enough to wonder what is going to happen. I had to finish before I went to bed!

I received a free advanced copy from NetGalley and these are my willingly given thoughts and opinions.

Elizabeth I is still on the throne, but not much longer. Who will take the throne after her death? Annis is Illegitimate, born in the family of English royalty. Used as a pawn, she is married to a Duncan. When he dies, she is still a prize for her royal connection. Rolfe Munroe goes to Duncan land to stop his cousin from kidnapping Annis. Even though Annis is English and Rolfe will be the next Laird of the Munroe, he sees her and wants her for his wife. Through a series of trials and tribulations, Rolfe and Annis will be tested for their love. Wine does an exceptional job interweaving separate stories of characters that connect to Rolfe and Annis. Recommended read for fans of Wine and Highlander historical romance.

Mary Wine knows her way around a story! She gives us Annis, a woman with a bloodline that everyone wants. She's been given away in marriage to a rotten man, but is now a widow. She knows she has to escape before they marry her off again.

Rolfe Monroe enters the story. His cousin has gone off to capture Annis, so Rolfe goes after him ...and then his life changes!

This story is filled with twists and turns. Our hero and heroine are honorable people whose lives are being manipulated by others. They must take a stand! Ms. Wine has given us some excellent secondary characters who hopefully will have stories of their own!

Great read!

Mary has a beautiful way with words, her stories leap off the page and become a wonderful reality.
Highlanders Captive is a great read, it’s not glamorous or fancy, but it is enjoyable and satisfying.
The characters are realistic and full of adventure and charisma.
Passionate with a chemistry that’s perfect for those with a romantic side.

I really enjoyed this book, and am hoping for a book featuring Jasper Chattan or Terrin Campbell soon.
Both were great side characters and deserved a book to themselves.

I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review

Rolfe Munro is the only son of the Laird of Munro. His father had been dying these last two years. He had been wife hunting. Euna his aunt, married into the Leslie clan. she sent him after her youngest son. He had just taken off to steal a woman from Duncan's lands and marry her. She had the blood of kings running in her veins. She was very sought after, they could see the advantage of having her in their clan.
Annis Stanley had been forced to marry Lonn Duncan but he had just died. His brother Goron Duncan was cruel and wanted to be Laird, he had married a Campbell girl, Terin, but that had been four years ago. What was funny was he still hadn't touched her. He wanted Annis. His mother was going to do away with his wife. Annis just wanted her freedom, she no longer trusted or believed men.
There are four clans vying for one English woman. There is a lot going on in this story. It could have gotten confusing but the author explained it so well. The characters were witty and Highlanders, also. She was kidnapped, hit on the head and no one trusted her because she was English. I really loved this novel. It had all kinds of twists and everyone wanted her even though she wanted no one. It was engaging, witty, and a touch of romance.

Fast-paced high adventure and romance are the hallmarks of this series. I found this book grabbed my attention from the opening chapter and I was unable to put it down for the rest of the day. Rolfe Munro is sent off on a routine visit to deliver a letter to his aunt and finds a distraught woman begging him to go after her numbskull cousin who is intent on stealing a bride. Therein was the start of Rolfe's problems. As one can expect the bride was not at all keen on being stolen, especially given that she had just managed to escape her late husband's evil family and Rolfe realises that he is going to have to play his own game of strategy if he is to win over the feisty woman who refuses to be pushed around any longer. I loved the interaction between Rolfe and Annis and in spite of the tension between them in the early part of the plot, their mutual respect grows as they come to appreciate one another's qualities. The novel is well written and keeps the reader's attention, and comes to a happy conclusion. I received a copy of this dramatic romance through Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Annis knows her only value is her bloodline. She has been bartered as a bride and now she is widowed that same blood will see her stolen and made a captive more than once. For women of that era marriage and breeding heirs is sometimes the only worth they have, especially when they are used to make alliances.

Rolfe Monroe is sent by his aunt to stop his cousin from doing something stupid. Capturing brides is seen as a normal way of life in Scotland. An English one with Royal blood is very valuable.

This is a Highland / historical romance with fabulous characters. We actually get two brave heroines. One of which I think will be the main heroine in the next story. Our hero is a dutiful son who wants to please his father but sometimes a man has to follow his heart.

Lots of twists and turns to this story, and a teaser for the next book at the end.

Great fun.

This was a nice Highlander book with good characters. The only reason I am giving it 3 stars is because of all the times that Annie’s was stolen. It got to be a bit ridiculous especially when her royal connection seemed pretty thin.

Poor Annis hasn't had the best time of it. She had to endure more hardships with shitty men than the previous two heroines did. I think it's strange that now that Annis is a widow, she's just up for grabs for every man every to come steal her away and lay claim to her. I mean, does she not get a say in who she ends up with? It's just first come first serve to whoever captured her? Who made these rules?

While Annis is very much a captive of pretty much everyone she comes into contact with, it's pretty clear from the get go that Rolfe is on her side and I really enjoyed seeing that relationship play out.

I also enjoyed the introduction of so many new characters because there were a lot of bread crumbs that I'm sure are going to be picked up in future books, and I'm really looking forward to reading more

I did enjoy reading this. Both Rolfe and Annis are likeable, strong, compassionate characters and make a good team. Annis is feisty, smart, wise and some of her antics were very comical. Considering their mutual attraction, I was totally engrossed in their dilemma and anxiously anticipating how it would all work out. Some of the methods are a bit harsh even though it was traditional, the story seemed overcrowded and I got mixed up a few times trying to keep track and romance was secondary. 3 1/2*

The Highlander’s Captive follows several separate storylines that all involve or revolve around Rolfe Munro. Rolfe’s father sends him with a missive for his aunt in Clan Leslie. His aunt, in turn, requests his assistance with her youngest son who is going to steal a bride from Clan Duncan: the recently widowed Annis of English origin. The Leslie and Munro unite against the Duncan to capture Annis. But then there is the matter of who gets to claim her: Seath Leslie, his older brother, or Rolfe Munro. Back to the Duncan, dissent is brewing regarding who will be their Laird. Meanwhile, Laird Munro is seeking an alliance with Laird Chattan. And through it all, we get to see the slow-growing romance between Rolfe and Annis as they get to know each other despite all the obstacles they must overcome to reach their HEA. This may sound confusing, but I found it easy to follow the separate but interrelated plots. The Highlander’s Captive is a fast and enjoyable read.

Thank you Net Galley for an ARC of The Highlander's Captive. I love a good Highlander romance and this one fit the bill. I have never read Mary Wine before but now that I have, I'm going to continue. She builds strong characters that I fell in love with.

Rating: 4.5 stars

Oh, tis a classic tale as ole as time in the world of Scottish romance. A handsome, dutiful, brawny, actually thinks before he leaps, future laird hero being pushed to seek a bride right when a verra unlikely choice others are fighting tooth and nail over is dangled in front of him. Complete with a sassy, resilient, royal blooded widow heroine determined not to go down without a fight. Lots of slow burn, relationship angst stays center stage here, while these two destined to be together figure things out. You see, there are several people who either have to be convinced or pushed completely out of the way for that to happen, folks.

The plot and writing flowed, so I stayed fully engaged. Not surprising at all since this author is Mary Wine after all, a legend in this genre.

I dinged the stars a little here for even the hero often referring to her as "his prize" and standing on the sidelines a wee bit longer than I thought he would or should. She truly was treated like a ping pong ball object. She had the rope burns to prove it. Though she soon earned respect of those around her when they saw her stand up straight, meet adversity head on, and not just shrivel up in fear and defeat.

At the end of the day, I'm always a sucker for an enemies to in love tale where we are shown the hero does have remorse and sadness for the heroine's situation and begins to yield his own steely resolve in winning the heart of his new, unexpected, lady love. Some very graphic smexy scenes show up later in the book, but do not hijack the story line, btw.

We are also given cameos and brief glimpses of other sub characters who are likely to take the spotlight in future sequels. In particular, one lass, who also has a history of being used as a pawn. She ultimately turned the tables on a threat that tried to take her out. Clever, indeed, Ms. Wine. I can't wait to see who wins this smart, brave woman's heart and hand in matrimony.

It did jump around quite a bit between what was going on at the various clan lands, so you had to pay close attention to the chapter introductions. Plus, the main couple's mental musings were often interwoven as a brief sentence or two, while events were unfolding. Almost like they were speaking to themselves. However, it still worked for me, just as this new addition to this great series did.

I definitely enjoyed the previous book, have yet to read the first one, and am already really looking forward to future releases of the Highland Rogues. Keep them coming, Ms. Wine. I'll be back for more!

In a time when women were mere chattel and were duty bound to wed for better alliances, Mary Wine brings us Annis and Rolfe's story. My heart went out to Annis, she just seemed to be everyone's captive, having no say in anything. This is a story of hopelessness turning into hope, distrust turning into trust and hate turning into love.

I very much enjoyed this story and the author's style of writing. It also doesn't hurt that Rolfe is a sexy kilt wearing Highlander:) Not only do we get Annis and Rolfe's story, we also get to see into the lives of a few other characters which makes it all very interesting.

A high 2 stars

The Highlander's Captive, by Mary Wine, is an okay book that didn't necessarily lose my attention; it didn't really grab it either though. It's third in a series, but it's the first one for me. I was a bit lost in the first chapter as a result, but after that, the story worked okay as a standalone. It does, however, appear to be setting up several subsequent books, and I would have preferred a little less of that and more time spent growing this book's characters.

Annis is a young English woman recently wed and even more recently widowed. Her status as someone with royal blood makes her something of a strategic choice as a bride, and she subsequently spends a good part of the book being trussed up and spirited away by one Highlander or another. Rolfe is one of those Highlanders, but his intention is a little different, and I guess that intention is what attracts Annis' attention.

I like Annis and Rolfe and think they make a good pair. However, there's never a moment where they talk to each other, really talk, about their growing up years, likes, dislikes, and so on. Instead, Annis' love for Rolfe stems from him being nice to her. For his part, Rolfe's love comes from a combination of admiring her spirit and appreciating her verbal defense of him. For me to buy into this relationship, I need to see more. I think that "more" is there, but I wish the author had teased it out more.

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion. Thanks!

I received The Highlander’s Captive as an arc from #netgalley. This review is my honest opinion.

#TheHighlandersCaptive was a pleasure to read. I did not realize this was the third book in a series, but the story flowed well enough that I had no problem reading it as a stand alone (although I’ll likely go back and read the first two books.)
I loved the pace of the story, and the strong female characters. I just finished a large series before this book, so this was a delightful “palate cleanser.”
I loved the witty banter of the characters. The Highlander’s Captive is a quick, feel good read.

Thank you to the author, Mary Wine, NetGalley, and Dragonblade Publishing for the privilege of reading this book.
