This is a reprint of an older book. I read this book before a long time ago, and I enjoyed it. The biography is simple. Therefore, I recommend this fans of the royals!

"The Queen Mother" is a biography of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, mother of Elizabeth II. The book is largely a loving tribute to Elizabeth as a woman oriented mostly around family, faith, and country.

This isn't a particularly critical look at Elizabeth. We find out she came out of World War II urging her husband to be more openly Christian in his public statements, but otherwise, there's little talk of how her own positions differed from her husband's. Her intense feelings about the Duke and Duchess of Windsor are just vaguely touched upon, for example, and there's little discussion of her feelings about her grandsons' disastrous marriages. (We find out Elizabeth helped to coordinate the connections that brought about Charles and Diana, but not her thoughts about the infamous implosion of the marriage.) The fall of the empire is referred to and we certainly get a sense of her regret over it, but only in passing. All in all, this is a benign, pleasant biography, one that makes you wish to have met the Queen Mother, but not one that reveals new layers of her psyche.

A delightful biography of England's most takes about Queen. I enjoyed this book and appricated the details put into it. Though I did know some facts I definitely learned new ones. As a lover of historical reads and everything Royal I definitely recommend this book!

A reprint of a biography written by a veteran court reporter, I would describe this book as "tediously short." The book is long on detail, nicely written but the narrative does not move in a way that keeps you reading. Another fault, common to court reporters of the time is that the subjects of the biographies have no faults. It isn't hagiography because it is written in a matter-of-fact style, but faults are ignored and not reported.

This is an interesting biography of the Queen Mother, but it is a very slow read, and at points was overly detailed to the point of becoming confusing.

I was excited to read this title, but I was dismayed to discover that it's simply a repackaged edition of a much older book.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

I have really enjoyed Helen Cathcart's two republished royal biographies from the 1980s; while they don't cover the subjects' full lives, it offers different insights than biographies written now. This is a solid biography of the Queen Mother. It covers all of the main points in her life without getting bogged down in details. (While longer, in-depth biographies can be good, sometimes you don't want to read 1000+ pages.) I would have liked slightly more time spent on her widowhood, perhaps more specific episodes- it flies by quickly in a blend of time at Mey and engagements. In any case, still a good introduction to QEQM.

This was an enjoyable read if a bit out of date. I wouldn’t recommend it necessarily as there are more recent books about the Queen Mother on the market.

This is a reprint of an older book on Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. While it was missing information on the last 15-20 years of her life, it was an enjoyable read and gave a lot of insight into the relationships she had with her family, especially King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II. The reader truly gets an understanding of how she kept "the firm" going, even through the dark days of World War II. If you're curious about the life of one of the last grand English ladies, this is a good place to start.

This is a wonderful biography. Referencing Royal journals, family letters and personal reflections, Helen Cathcart provides an intimate look at Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. She was a devoted wife to Prince Albert and mother to Elizabeth and Margaret whose lives changed forever when Edward VIII abdicated the throne for the woman he loved and her husband became England’s new King, George VI.
Elizabeth faced the challenges of her new role as Queen with her unending spirit and unconditional support for her husband and the people of England..
With the death of her husband in 1952, their eldest daughter ascended the throne becoming Queen Elizabeth II. From that day forward she would be affectionately known as the Queen Mother. Her unwavering devotion to her daughter and her public and personal charm made her a most popular and loved member of the Royals.
This is an insightful and colorful portrait of a remarkable woman.
Highly recommended.
My thanks to NetGalley, Helen Cathcart and Sapere Books for an ARC in exchange for an honest book review.

This is an enjoyable account of the life of the Queen Mother. I am a huge admirer of Britain’s Royal Family, and I especially enjoy reading about the Queen Mother. Overall, there was nothing in this book that I had not already read, but I enjoyed it all the same.

THE QUEEN MOTHER by HELEN CATHCART is the delightful and well told story of the life of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. The author takes us from her happy childhood, through her support of her beloved Bertie as his consort, through the war years and then into her very active widowhood.
What an amazing woman, with her zest for life, love of people, friendliness, sense of fun and enjoyment, unwavering sense of duty and her faith in God..
I cannot recommend the book highly enough.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Sapere Books. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

The Queen Mother was everything I needed. I love everything royal and this is an excellent look into what it's like to be married to the spare who becomes King. Helen Cathcart put in a lot of time and research which I greatly appreciated and it showed.

Originally published in the mid 80s by the late Harold Albert (writing under the pen name Helen Cathcart) this delightful biography of one of England's most iconic royal consorts is a captivating and nostalgic journey throughout the ups and downs of the British monarchy during its long and eventful 20th century. Cathcart gives us a detailed & entertaining portrait of the woman who became a powerful presence during her daughter's reign and one of the most beloved and respected figures in British popular culture during last century. And please, don't worry, it's a bit gossipy too...😉 To be enjoyed without moderation.....

Many thanks to Netgalley and Sapere for this wonderful ARC.
