This was a great read. It had lots of adventure and of course, a happy ending. This is the first in a new series. I can't wait to read more from this author.

Kade said goodbye to the wife who had been cheating on him for years. She drove away never to be seen again – until her car was fished out of the lake eight years later. This is a riveting romantic suspense told by a master storyteller. I loved the way the author fleshed out the characters – flaws and all – and made them real along with plenty of sparks between the rancher and the private detective. Can't wait for the stories of the other brothers!

I was sucked into the action in this book. But then it took forever to go anywhere and that bothered me a bit. The author seemed to need it to last longer than was necessary. Still a fun read though and I love the relationship between Kade and Ellie.

This is a first in a series, and a murder mystery featuring a private detection agency helping Kade Logan track down who killed his ex wife. It was slow to pick up and I didn't feel connected with the story at all, and it felt a little like an off episode of CSI maybe. A woman at the private detective agency, Ellie, goes undercover and tries to figure out who did the murder of his ex wife. Overall the writing wasn't bad, but I just wasn't interested. I'm granting this a solid 3 stars.

The Last Goodnight was an excellent read featuring a romance between a rancher and the private investigator he hires to look into his late wife's murder.

When Kade Logan's wife Heather drove off eight years ago, he never thought it would be the last time he saw her. After her car is found in a nearby lake, Kade decides to hire someone to help him get to the bottom of her murder. Private investigator Eleanor Bowman specializes in undercover work so she integrates herself in Kade's ranch in the hopes of learning what happened to his late wife. After another young woman's body is found nearby, Ellie believes the deaths are connected and they're closing in on the killer. But when the killer sets his sights on Ellie, Kade will risk everything to save the woman he's come to love.

Kade has spent his life working on the family ranch and he's never wanted a different life for himself. Kade is definitely an alpha male which personally I enjoy but I can see how his possessiveness could put off some readers. Ellie is a great character and I liked how independent she is. She's fantastic at her job and has a way about her that gets people to open up to her. She's very thorough in her investigation and I liked that she left no stone unturned.

Kade and Ellie's romance develops quickly as they work together to solve his wife's murder. The attraction between them was immediate and their chemistry was fantastic. Kade definitely struggled to treat Ellie like an employee as a result and I liked seeing them fall for each other. When their relationship turns physical, the steamy scenes were well done. I enjoyed the two working together to solve Heather's murder as Ellie pushed Kade and took the case in directions he wouldn't have thought of. The suspense picks up quite a bit as we get closer to the end and I thought the final confrontation with the killer was very well done.

Overall The Last Goodnight was a great read and I will definitely be continuing the series when the next book, The Last Mile, releases.

Hijinks on a high country Colorado ranch

Eight years ago Kade Logan's wife presumably left him but then two years ago her murdered body showed up. And now her vehicle has been pulled out of a lake.

Kade wants to find out who killed his estranged wife, even though she had been cheating on him. And so he hires Ellie Bowman, a Denver private investigator, to come undercover onto his Colorado high country ranch and look for clues.

Then another woman's murdered body is found nearby and someone starts taking potshots at Kade's livestock and more around his ranch. And both he and Ellie find that sparks are flying between the two of them as they work to hunt down a killer.

This was a sexy thriller taking place in Colorado - one of my favorite places to be.

I received this book from Kensington Books through Net Galley in the hopes that I would read it and leave an unbiased review.

This is the first book in an exciting new series from Kat Martin. I loved the body guard series, but here, the main characters is Eleanor (Elle) Bowman female PI, working as an independent contractor for Nighthawk Security. Her specialty is undercover work, so Conner Delaney, owner of Nighthawk recommends her to rancher Kade Logan. The murder of Logan's wife 8 years prior became a cold case, until her car suddenly is found. As soon as Elle comes to the ranch, working undercover as the new cook, the ranch is targeted by someone, poisoning waterholes, shooting cattle, the ranch dog and then some of the cowboys. Elle's job is made more difficult by her attraction to Kade which is mutual, but as both of them have experienced cheating, both have trust issues. Aside from the page turning action, there are detailed descriptions of life on a ranch. Usually, I can guess pretty quickly "who done it". But not this time. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series, I assume about Kade's brothers.

I read an ARC from Netgalley.com. This is my unbiased and voluntary review.

This was my first time reading Kat Martin and although the writing was good the plot was just ok for me. Maybe I was expecting a little more suspense. Still an enjoyable read that I know a lot of my friends would like. Thanks!

This is another well written book by the Author - murder , mystery , intrigue and love all in one place - what's not to like .
Kade's estranged wife was murdered several years ago and when her car is found in a local lake he hires P.I. Ellie Bowman to go under cover on his ranch to discover who killed her ............ but at what cost as another body surfaces .
Are the killings linked ? Who seduced and murdered both victims ? What will investigating these events turn up ?
Its against this background that our duo must navigate their way through their growing feelings - will Ellie become the next victim ?

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own

The Last Goodnight has a nice blend of romance and suspense. There are some spicy scenes. Kat Martin always delivers a page turner.

Kat Martin takes your basic romantic suspense novel and throws in a few unexpected plot points to up the ante. Both of the main characters have romantic baggage to haunt their developing attraction. But mysterious and escalating property damage plus a murder, with a few tenuous similarities to an eight-year-old cold case, gave me plenty of reason to keep turning pages.

I enjoyed The Last Goodnight but, for me, the mystery/suspense side was better crafted than the romance. The first third of the book seemed fresher and moved along better than the second third where phrases and interactions seemed a bit repetitious. My primary issue, however, was with the character Kade. His emotions seemed limited to jealousy and lust although they did evolve somewhat for the ending. Ellie was a strong heroine and, as a private investigator, I think merits a series of her own. All the loose ends came together to a satisfying conclusion .

First in the new Blood Ties series, I will be interested in seeing where the next entry picks up with the Logan brothers. Gave this one 3.5 stars rounded up.

FYI - I received a copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Good start to a new series from Kat Martin! Kade’s wife was murdered years ago and her car was just found, so he hires Ellie to go undercover on his ranch to try and determine who killed her. In the meanwhile, strange events start happening putting everyone in danger so Ellie helps with that too while trying to figure out if everything is related.

Ellie and Kade are attracted to each other, but have issues with commitment, Kade was cheated on by his late wife and Ellie’s ex was a cheater as well. Despite their pasts, the two end up falling for each other.

Great romance and mystery blended together. I look forward to more in this series.

Thanks to the publisher for a review copy via NetGalley.
