I did not think it was possible to write a better book than the first but Mr Osman has managed it. This is a cracking read and kept me captivated all the way through.
This book has given the chance to flesh out the characters that we met in the first book and give them real character. This reminds me so much of an old fashioned Ealing Comedy with a character driven plot and the 70's series the Zoo Gang (which probably hardly anyone remembers).
It would be wrong to give much away but I just loved the characters in this book and you end up wanting them all to do well and be okay.
I can not recommend this second book highly enough it is a great read and if you don't buy it straight away give it to someone for Xmas!

I'll be honest I was worried if Book 2 The Man Who Died Twice was going to be any good. I loved the first book The Thursday Murder club when I read it pre-bookstagram. I was not disappointed the characters were well written and just a great ensemble. I felt like I knew each character personally and should be arranging my overdue visit to Coopers Chase. Joyce is my favourite character and please tell me that I am not the only one who checked Instagram. Osman's ability to write the varying characters is astounding and at time laugh out loud funny. My favourite moment was when Joyce asked a criminal if he needed the toilet as the journey was going to be long.

As always more musings over on my blog https://pjsandbooks.wordpress.com/

This is such a fun book it is hard to do it justice in a review. I already liked the first one in this series and the sequel was just the right blend for me. A well plotted and well written detective story with original heroes, written with an incredible sense of humor. Osman does a really great job with his characters and the details of the story make me suspect he must have quite a few elderly friends or relatives, though I doubt that there would be any as outrageous as Elizabeth. It keeps you on your toes till the very end and the ending really restores your belief in humanity, though there are quite a few dead bodies to get through first. A book everyone will enjoy!

This is Osman's second novel in the Thursday Murder Club series and, like the first it is absolutely delightful. I can only describe it as akin to sitting inside near the fire on a winter's afternoon with a nanna rug and a cup of tea. Everything about Osman's writing, setting and characters is endearing, surprising and relatable. With just enough thrill to keep you guessing and a few shady characters thrown in on top. This book is a hands-down must read of 2021.

After the events of the last book, the Thursday Murder Club have got back to business, but when Elizabeth receives a mysterious note from a man who she knows died years ago, the Club get embroiled in another adventure - one that will see them tangle with the Mafia, drugs barons, the security services and a particularly unpleasant youth...

As a fan of the last book, I was very excited to receive this one and it does not disappoint in the slightest - in fact, I would argue that it is better than the first one! Osman seems more comfortable writing for the characters now, and allowing them to get into more scrapes whilst still retaining the humour throughout the book. This is a very easy 5* choice for me!

Absolutely wonderful. As ever, his ability to delicately examine humanity while telling a brilliant story, is impressive. Engaging and fun - and fans of the first book will not be disappointed!

This is possibly the most excited I had ever been to receive an advanced copy - and the excitement didn't leave me from one cover to the other!

We pick up where we left off, in the hands of our trusty Coopers Chase friends, off for another adventure with loads of twists and turns. Here's the thing - I actually thought this one was better than TTMC. It felt like Osman was really getting into the flow of writing, the plot and characters were a bit more fleshed out than the preceding book. And it is truly just as much of a riot as the first one. The characters really are the backbone of these stories, the quintessential Britishness of the whole thing is the entire comedy style and it is absolutely golden.

Thank you, SO MUCH to Viking and the author for the advanced copy!

The Man Who Died Twice, Richard Osman 5/5 💙

The Thursday Murder Club are back and they are on excellent form. Elizabeth has received a letter from an old colleague with whom she shares a long history. He needs help with stolen diamonds, violent mobsters and a threat to his life.
Elizabeth enrols the Thursday Murder Club. The mystery and bodies pile up as Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron help Elizabeth unravel what lies at the end.

The Man Who Died Twice is a highly anticipated release which lives up to every expectation. Joyful and funny this return trip is like coming home. You can become engrossed in the mystery, knowing you’ll never unravel it before Elizabeth does. You’ll feel like you are sharing a slice of cake with your four dear friends who taught you that age does not mean underestimating anyone. As before Richard Osman has written smart, brilliant and darkly hilarious. The Man Who Died Twice is another 5 star, must read. I look forward to the next edition of the series!

Wow, just wow! I loved “The Thursday Murder Club” and have recommended it far and wide. I was looking forward to this book the moment I finished the first one, and it did not disappoint. If anything, it is even better than the first. I know, how is that even possible?

We meet our loveable group of O.A.Ps and what makes this book great is that it’s like meeting a group of your friends again. Other characters from the first book return, with Bogdan, Donna, and DCI Chris Hudson joining our gang again. Their escapades will leave you laughing and sitting on the edge of your seat throughout the entire book.

I don’t want to give anything away in this book, but believe me when I say it’s a page-turner. I raced through this as soon as I got my hands on it. We have twists and turns throughout, some red herrings along the way, and a great who-done-it mystery. Richard Osman is a genius!

I’m sad to have finished the book as it’s saying goodbye to these wonderful characters for the time being. You learn more details about them, their past and personalities becoming a little clearer to us. If anything, I love them more after this book. This is one that I absolutely recommend, light-hearted with dry wit and humour, but a mystery that will keep you guessing till the very end.

Since Richard Osman’s previous book had such great reviews I thought I’ll try out a book of his. Unfortunately I feel that he is not an author for me.

I enjoyed this book so much. Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for this ARC.
So, we're back in the world of the Thursday Murder Club and the action starts right from the first page. Elizabeth is contacted by an ex husband needing help.
I love the style of writing and the way you end up so emotionally invested in all these characters. I did not want to put it down.
I don't want to give away any spoilers. This is a great book and now I'm desperate for the third installment!

I really like this book, it made a change from the cozy mysteries of old. This one set in a retirement village with links to M5. The story winds it way around the disappearance of a man who, from all intense and purposes, has been dead before but returns to recoup a fortune.
There are many twists and turns, a lot of investigating and some laughs. I must say, although slow at times, I could not put it down until the end. Really enjoyed it.

I can not begin to tell you how much I adored this book.
When I saw it was available to request I couldn’t click the button fast enough.
I adored the first Thursday Murder Club adventure, and have been looking forward to the 2nd instalment since I finished the last page of the first.
The Man Who Died Twice sees the return of the much loved elderly foursome, along with most of the other characters from the first book.
I don’t want to give away too much of the story, but I will say I found it as charming and enjoyable as the first book, perhaps even a little more so.
I don’t have a single critique, I just feel so lucky I got the chance to read this gem early.
Thank you so much Net Galley and Penguin.

I think, I think I preferred this to the first one. I absolutely adore Joyce's chapters, her Instagram handle made me laugh out loud for quite some time. Highly entertaining, witty. challenging and felt familiar with the gang back together.

We are back at Cooper’s chase for the latest instalment…
What I loved: further development of likeable characters, pacy writing and crazy escapades (stolen diamonds, drug dealers and deceit). Lots of twists and lots of fun!
Sometimes the scenarios were too far fetched but this series is meant to be tongue in cheek so this did not hamper my enjoyment.
I was concerned this wouldn’t live up to the first instalment, boy was I wrong! LOVED it!

In this second book in the series, not only do we get another cracking mystery to solve, but as I'd hoped, we also learn more about the four main characters, particularly Elizabeth, and their lives before the retirement home and the Murder Club. Although the perspective switches around between the various characters, Joyce is the dominant narrative voice and this works really well. She is the Miss Marple-esque character - all soft and fluffy on the outside, but with a core of steel and a good brain, even if she doesn't always realise it herself. I love how it feels as though she is talking to the reader - the chatty narrative style suits her character perfectly and pulls the reader right into the action alongside her. Her foray into the world of Instagram had me giggling right from the start, as did her throwaway comment about it right at the end of the book.

The initial incident strikes right at the heart of the group of friends and I love their response to what happens. On one level we know the police probably shouldn't encourage them, but at the same time we want them to take matters into their own hands where the police are powerless to act. I want a group of friends like this when I'm approaching old age. They look out for each other in every way conceivable and it's wonderful!

In short, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and eagerly anticipate the next instalment.

I'm hugely grateful to both the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC and for the opportunity to review the book.

Full review will be posted on my blog on 16th September.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for sending me this eArc.

Once I started this book I couldn't put it down. Although these characters have only had one previous outing, reading this was like meeting up with old friends. The Thursday Murder Club is back and crime-fighting pensioners Elizabeth, Ron, Joyce and Ibrahim are on a mission to recover stolen diamonds, which sees them up against MI5, Mafia bosses, gangsters and the local drug dealer. Alongside all this, they are also seeking revenge for a brutal and cowardly attack on one of the quartet and are ably assisted, once again, by Donna, Chris and Bogdan. The relationships between all of the characters are bubbling along nicely and it will be interesting to see where they go next. There are lots of laugh out loud moments in the book, many of them provided by Joyce (her foray into the world of Instagram is priceless), but issues of age and vulnerability are handled sensitively. If you enjoyed the first book, you'll love this one. Highly recommended.
