I loved this book. The storytelling, the characters, the narrator. Everything.

I struggle with finding adult fantasy that isn't one of two things:

1. Struggling through miles of world building and exposition where the author clearly is trying to write the next Lord of the Rings.

or

2. It's just smut but they threw in some faeries.

While I enjoy a ~spicy~ book as much as anyone else, this book did neither of those things and I am happy for it.

Cursed luck was well written with engaging characters and potential to be a great duology or even series. Although I have no idea if the author has plans to do either.

*Thank you to the publisher for this eARC.

I really enjoyed this book. Thank you netgallery for allowing me to review it before the release date! I will be looking out for more books by this author. I would also like to hear more from this narrator.

Many years ago was the first time I read a book by this author. Then a few months ago I read one of her non-fantasy series. I say all that to say that this book is a lot. Like a whole lot. In the Rockton series I recently read it was hit and miss with the whole lot of crazy and so much going on. This one though? I’m not sure how to feel about this one...

We start out with Kennedy a curse weaver who just wants to live her life and run her antique shop. Her family’s magic is in the removal of curses from objects. She wanted to get out of her small town so she set up her own shop in Boston to enjoy city life. Everything goes wrong when she meets the snobby Aiden who wants to hire her for a job. She later finds out that he is a little different too and his magic is in luck. She doesn’t like him and an off handed comment makes her think he’s threatened her sisters who end up kidnapped. What does this kidnapper want? The same thing as Aiden... to un-curse a famously cursed ancient necklace that’s coming up for auction. So they have to team up to try to get the necklace to save her sisters. Naturally absolutely everything goes wrong.

There’s magic and near death and multiple kidnappings and oh right Greek gods... It’s a lot. And when you are dealing with Greek gods there’s always some kind of familial infighting. Curses and luck and shenanigans.

Something that seems to come up far too often in paranormal/fantasy types of stories how someone who is already doing something unbelievable will believe something else is completely impossible. Um when you have magic yourself and your family has maintained the fact that you are decedents of gods and then when you find that there are real living mythical gods that’s something crazy? Something you just can’t believe?

I did not read this book as a serial since I literally only heard of it because I’m doing an audiobook review. And since the book hasn’t been released I can’t just skim forward a little. It’s not a bad story at all it’s just too much and rather exhausting. The whole kidnap plot was perfectly fine the immortal twist didn’t make it more interesting just overly complicated. Though of course considering those involved the chaotic insanity makes sense it just could have been interesting without all of that. I like Kennedy and Aiden and I appreciated their love for their siblings.

I'm still dipping my toe in fantasy but I thought this was a really intriguing audiobook and loved all the detail about the magical world and items. I thought the bond between sisters was a really lovely touch too. I'll definitely be seeking out more fantasy and more from this author.

I didn't realize when I picked up Cursed Luck, that it had been previously released as a serial. I think I might have enjoyed it more in that format. I was granted the audiobook in completion on Netgalley for review. I liked the narrator and the story was a fun one about magic and luck and curses and the love between sisters. It went in a a little bit weird direction with the Greek mythology and the whole kidnapping plot. While it wasn't quite what I was expecting, I'm sure others will enjoy it. This was my first Kelley Armstrong book.
