Rachel Klein worked at the White House until all went bad. Out of nowhere "someone" hits her as they speed by.
Is this because of the critisism of the President (which managed to get her fired), or some other reason? As always with this author there is humor, it's timely, and most importantly, she gives us intelligent, but fun main characters.
Love her. I highly recommend.

I picked up Rachel to the Rescue because I was looking for something light and cheerful. (Also, it has Rachel in the title!) Luckily, this hit the spot. Rachel Klein has a job at the Trump White House taping together all of the documents that the president rips up after he reads them. One drunken night, she accidentally replies all to an office-wide email in which she criticizes Trump and his ilk. She is promptly fired the next morning. As she is leaving the office on foot, she’s run over by a car and wakes up later in the hospital.

When Rachel finds out who ran her over, that opens up a whole can of worms that could involve the president. She takes a new job working for a muckraking journalist who mainly hired her for the dirt on Trump. She tries her best to stay above the fray but it’s not always possible. Meanwhile, her personal life is actually going pretty well – her roommates set her up with a great guy and she has very loving parents.

I found this book to be charming. I liked that there wasn’t too much drama, apart from Rachel trying to figure out who ran her over and why. She and her boyfriend never fought – it was nice. As far as romance goes, it’s extremely chaste. That may be good or bad depending on how steamy you like your books. Also, it takes down Trump in many ways so if you’re a fan of his, you definitely won’t like this book. I personally thought it was really funny. Recommended.

Hmm. Not sure what to say that isn’t already the publisher’s description. An easy breezy book. If you’re a Trump fan, and you’re sensitive about your man, you’ll want to skip this one. It’s a beach read. What more can I say? Thanks to NetGalley for a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

This is not the book for fans of former President Trump, but it is a humorous take on the end of his term in an alternative reality. After Rachel Klein is hit by a car driven by a woman involved in a sexual relationship with the President, her life becomes all the better as he spirals in a way his haters will love.

A humorous take on life in the Trump era, as Rachel is fired from her job at the White House, pasting back together the many documents regularly and illegally shredded by Trump. Rachel is hit by a car while leaving the White House by a philandering optometrist who is Trump’s secret lover. The laughs are endless as we see Melania drive away from the White House, stopping at the Biden rest stop in Delaware. Rachel gets a new job with an unscrupulous author, digging for more dirt on Trump. With quirky characters and political satire, this book was a fun read. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.

Unlike others I've read from this author, I didn't care for this one at all. I was bored by its subject and dislikes the characters.
Thank you netgalley and the publisher for this arc

I was attracted to this book because I thought I had read some of the author's previous books -- I looked through her book titles and realized this is the first book of hers I have read! After reading this fun romp through the Trump era I will definitely read other books by Lipman. Rachel is an extremely likeable character who ends up getting fired from the White House (not a spoiler since this happens in the opening pages! What ensues rolls out like a mad-cap caper and I could imagine a movie version of this.

I highly recommend this book if you are interested in a fun, well-written adventure!

Another brilliant read from Lipman. An enjoyable take on the White House & Trump Administration with many characters to love and enjoy as they cross each other’s paths.

An untimely email sends our unlikely heroine on the adventure of a lifetime. It’s a humorous look at life in the political arena of journalists and the secret handshaking that goes on behind closed doors. It’s love in unexpected places at points in life where you were meant to be solid and now find yourself humming for no reason. Rachel’s rescue is the stuff of political science majors dream. Landing a great job after a very public dismissal and finding love for more than an afternoon. The humor is timely and incisive.

I DNR'd this at 30%.

The concept was okay. Personally, I enjoyed the bashing of Trump. However, I just wasn't drawn to the story. I personally didn't see where it would go and wasn't particularly fond of the writing style.

Thank you to #Netgalley for providing me this ARC.

Rachel to the Rescue is another hilarious book by Elinor Lipman.. I was a huge fan of Good Riddance. This book, I figured, would be even better because it is set in DC. Well, it had all the pieces that make for a great Lipman novel plus some good, old-fashioned Trump jokes.

Other pros in the book: the super nice boyfriend, the roommate’s live-in girlfriend who becomes the glue holding the apartment together, and the goofy boss who sometimes feels like a drunk college kid with his pathetic hijinks. And the work enemy, Sandra, was drawn is such hilarious detail.

I know this novel came out before January 6 so the jokes about the former occupant were probably funny prior to the attempted coup. It was a good book. Lipman is an excellent comedic writer. She always has quirky parent(s) and goofy main characters. This came out after the COVID shutdown and is one of the first books I’ve read that makes any mention of it. I appreciated that it was mostly in “before times” but included a little slice of pandemic life. I needed a book that didn’t go too deeply into the unbearable sadness of this time. This was the perfect gateway book for me.

I loved the plot, the characters and how it's such an amazing read for the political lover and hopeless romantic and funny as well.

Rachel works in the Trump White House taping back together all the important documents President Trump rips up, even though he's not supposed to. (This is based on a real job during that administration!) Well, she works in the Trump White House until she accidentally sends a critical email to a co-worker but hits "reply all" and the email gets sent to Trump himself. Then she gets fired.

Then she gets hit by a car.

But not just any car. A car driven by the President's mistress.

And thus begins this fast-paced, humorous story of lawyers, cheating spouses, and an imagined world where Melania divorces Trump because of his infidelities.

But despite the whole Trump thing being pitched to me as the main story, it actually becomes more of a background; something that spurs Rachel on to get a new job, become closer to her roommates, and fall in love. If, like me, you're expecting the Trump stuff to take center stage, you might be disappointed. The novel turns into a romantic comedy and then... ends.

I wanted a little more resolution for the Trump stuff, and a little more development for the romance stuff. And while I liked the fast pace of the story, it read more like a movie script than a novel. Lots of dialogue but not much action. I'm also not really sure what Rachel rescued.

While I thought the premise was interesting, I wanted more from this novel. It did not go in the direction I had anticipated.

Rachel to the Rescue is published by Mariner Books and is available to purchase now. I received a free e-ARC in exchange for my review.

I usually love Lipman's books but this one was too much too soon. By that I mean it's July 2021 and satire about 2020 and Trump is too much for me.

There is a sweet romance between Rachel and Alex that could've been more center stage. I just felt like I didn't get to know any of the characters well.

As much as I enjoy Elinor Lipman's books, I wasn't sure I was ready to read anything, even fictional, about a former White House employee of the Administration-that-shall-not-be-named.

But I need not have worried. This is a fast, fun, and one might even say silly novel (in which T**** is discussed but does not appear), about Rachel Klein, who loses her job at the White House and is hit by a car shortly thereafter. While the premise sounds grim, the story is anything but, as it follows Rachel's resulting adventures/misadventures, which involve the author's usual cast of quirky but ultimately likeable characters. An entertaining read even (or especially?) for those burned out from the recent years' political horrors. 3.5 stars from me, with thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC.

Rachel to the Rescue was funny at times. I have to say that I enjoy poking fun of the powers that be just as much as anyone and I am no fan of the former guy. That being said, I wasn’t sure where this went. Instead of being about what happened to Rachel, it was about how Rachel grows into her adult life. Unfortunately, we don’t get to experience Rachel before the accident. We get to hear about it. It didn’t seem like enough. It was as if I started reading one book and finished a different one, but I only had half of that second book. Rachel to the Rescue is about a quirky group of people who come together. I like that kind of book. Not sure why the rest was in there.

3.5 stars. This was an interesting satire, and what a cast of characters. Rachel gets fired from her job taping back together documents that the president tears up, and on her way out is hit by a car. The story covers what happens after with her, her new job, her parents, roommates, relationship, and what happens in the White House and with those associated with the person who hit her. The story would seem totally ridiculous and far-fetched except for having already lived through the reality. This was an entertaining read.

As we all know comedy is subjective and this satire didn't do it for me. The premise is interesting, the characters are well written. But I just wasn't captivated by the humour.

“I was merely a bystander, if stumbling into traffic could actually be called bystanding.” Rachel to the Rescue by Elinor Lipman

3.5 stars. This was fun and unexpected. I enjoyed it.

What if you got a job in the White House, and was fired by accidentally emailing everyone what you thought about the 45th President? And fired for it the next day. And on that same day, crossing the street to leave the White House, you’re hit by a car. And who was driving the car? Someone who had close relationship with the 45th, but wasn’t FLOTUS.

In this book, the events that happened after Rachel was ran over was something that could’ve happened in an alternate universe. What a field day everyone would have if it did happen in real life. And Rachel? Well, she found a job that sort of tracked the events that followed.

Then the pandemic happened which put everything on halt. And made the events that happened to the 45th et al, fade into the background. I guess that’s my complaint about the book. Though it would’ve been elections by then and 46th came into White House. Still, it sort of fizzled towards the end and focused more on Rachel living, moving on during lock down. Which was a bit less exciting.

But other than the ending (it was a happy every after for now), this was a fun read.

Thank you Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and NetGalley for the arc of this book. It was fun.

I've read many of Elinor Lipman's books. I'm a big fan, her books are the perfect summer-y vacation reads, and this one fit that bill just fine. I always love a found family, and while main character Rachel certainly isn't lacking in family, I still loved her collection of the roommates, the love interest, and the boss and his........stepsister??

Lipman's characters are typically lovable, and they are here as well. Rachel's over-the-top exaggerations and sarcasm had me chuckling, as well as the "yenta" roomie shenanigans.

It was nice to escape into an alternate version of reality where Melania gets the heck out of dodge, and while I was worried the Trump content would have been a little triggering- it wasn't too bad if I stayed in "romcom" brain and not in "oh good lord this man actually happened" mode.

Thanks to Mariner for the review copy!
