On point, very contemporary and were we really ready to see trump appearing in chick lit not disguised one single bit?
It was a cute read with even cuter characters. Go Rachel!!

I am typically a fan of Elinor Lipman's work but I really struggled with this book. It started out good but took a down hill slide pretty quickly and I had to force myself to finish.

Rachel was desperate-she needed a job if she wasn't going to have to work at the family store in New York but her skill set wasn't too large. After college, and after her author assistant job died (along with the author,) she landed a job in the Trump White House. At first, she transcribed documents but was moved to the more important job of scotch taping documents Trump shredded in his many hissy fits. Canned after a facetious email was sent to the wrong people, Rachel was hit by a speeding car and knocked unconscious-amazingly, that was her lucky break!
I loved this book-it was political satire but not in a heavy-handed manner-it was romantic, smart, and hilariously funny. My only complaint was that it ended too soon-I wanted more of Rachel's story and the other great characters Ms. Lipman conjured up-bravo!

Sometimes it’s good to read a book about things which are going on in real life and see the author manage to shine a light on how absurd that reality is. This is good fun with just enough of an edge to make you actually think about why fiction about current events can be funny to the point of hysteria. Too close to the bone? Maybe, but the characters are engaging and the pace is good - an enjoyable read.

I received a copy of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley.

I didn't enjoy this: I found the tone obnoxious, the subject matter pointless, and it felt strangely unfair reading about contemporary real life people in a work of fiction. I did like Alex though.

3.5 stars my friends!

Listen, if you dislike Trump and you do like a little lovely romance (but without the throbbing common to erotica) this book is for you.

I loved the Judaism. I loved the lesbians. I loved the parents (jeez I miss my parents). I loved the portrayal of the despicable ass wipes otherwise known as the Trumps. I loved the portrayal of the lunatics surrounding Trump. I loved the way that Rachel can’t get out of her own way and seems to have a weird relationship with boundaries but in this version of life, her quirky awkwardness ends with a thriving friend group and a lovely partner.

To be honest, I cried at the end when the story turned to COVID and Zoom weddings and lockdown life. And I shuddered when the author portrayed Trump on Hannity defending his usual bullshit. In that sense, maybe it’s a touch too soon... but overall it’s a funny, cute story. A beach read if I’ve ever read one.

Entertaining at times but have to say, having Trump fatigue, even reading a satire-is book dealing with him is too much PTSD for my life right now.

This was a fun absurdist take on life for one woman in proximity to Trump's White House. It's also the first novel I've read where the pandemic is written into the plot in some way. In spite of the potential for it to be "too soon" this book manages to be a light-hearted romp with fun side characters. 3.5 stars. I received an ARC from NetGalley.

Thank goodness for Elinor Lipman! Just when I wondered how pleasurable a novel could be, I had the opportunity to read this. The story of poor Rachel, working in the Trump White House at a job more absurd than anything that could exist except for Trump. The catalyst for the novel is Rachel, poor, fired Rachel, exiting the Whit House and being hit by a car. Of course, since it’s the Trump White House, the driver was headed there for nefarious purposes.

As always, Lipman has gathered a group of funny , lovable eccentrics to populate this novel. Combining a few pieces of absurd truth and very funny circumstances mixed together, Lipman has created a delightful novel, not to be missed by reading groups.

Thank you Netgalley for this opportunity. to read, laugh and enjoy this delightful novel.

Rachel Klein is fired from her job at the White House for sending one of those reply all emails - either we have all received or sent one of those! On her way out, she ends up in an accident and the driver of the vehicle will change the course of her life in more ways than one!

It was interesting to read a book that not only dealt with the Trump presidency but dove into the COVID pandemic and have the characters lives be interrupted by the changes made to everyday life due to the health crisis. I read the book in the middle of December and I am glad I waited until after the election and the vaccine was on the way because I am not sure I would have enjoyed this book if I had read it during election season!

For me this book was good, not great but good. It was funny to see the fiction being depicted - knowing the truth and seeing some fiction was entertaining. There might have been a moment or two where I wish it was fact!

This was my first Elinor Lipman read and I am intrigued to read more, maybe a book that isn't so much about the 46th president.
