"Donut Fall in Love" by Jackie Lau

Ryan Kwok, an actor, returns to Toronto after the promo tour for his latest film. This rom-com is not getting decent reviews. Ryan decides to take some much needed time off to focus on himself. However, even though Ryan tries to help his family after his mom's passing, he still does not quite know how to talk to his father.

Lindsay McLeod is a baker who loves making innovative treats! Ryan knocks over two dozen specialty donuts at her bakery! What a mess!

Ryan signs up for a celebrity baking episode of Baking Fail but doesn't know much about baking. He asks Lindsay to teach him how to bake, and she agrees.

During their lessons, Ryan and Lindsay cannot deny their sparks. They begin talking, learning there is always more than meets the eye, and the two of them have more in common than they thought.

I had the desire to bake while reading this book! Ryan was super relatable, working through his grief and changing family dynamics. Lindsay's mom is dating again, and her friend married, so Lindsay is feeling lost. Very cute rom-com book focusing on grief and loss.

Thank you to @netgalley for the opportunity to read in exchange for my honest opinion.

A little cliche and the ending a bit predictable but overall a good read. The premise of the book is simple boy meets girl, except the boy is a hollywood star/golden globe nominee and girl is a baker, both are from Toronto, Canada. Their meet-cute is over spilled donuts and then it's a whirlwind of romance. For fans of romance novels and baking shows.

Couldn't finish this one; something about that male character felt empty and kind of vapid- he wasn't likable at all.

This one was super cute! I loved all the baking, it was making me hungry! I loved how they bonded over their grief and sweets. The characters were well developed in depth characters that I felt were real and likeable.

Thanks NetGalley for this ARC!

Lau created two lovable characters for this rom-com. Ryan is charming and multidimensional. We hear a lot about how good looking he is, but she also gives him vulnerability and he is working to hold everyone in his family together. Lindsey is well adjusted, self-made, confident (except when it comes to dating Ryan, then we see her very repetitive insecure self-talk).
Their romance is sweet, the foodie references are peppered just the right amount, and the break up scene isn’t toooooo dramatic, so the recovery is believable.
Nice, easy fun read!
Thanks for the arc!

I love this book so much! First off, when you read a Jackie Lau novel, you're going to need to have snacks handy. The way she describes food makes you hungry. After reading this book, I BAKED BROWNIES. I couldn't not have something sweet and cakey. I needed it!

Ryan was super relatable, even though he was a movie star/actor. Lau did a fantastic job of working through all the things he's worried about, particularly the changing dynamics of his family, now that his mom has passed away. There's a scene where he is vulnerable with Lindsay, while they are baking that was so lovely and sweet, where they talk about loss, and why he's doing the Celebrity edition of Baking Fail. I just loved that. So great.

Lindsay is also navigating changing family & friend dynamics. Her mom is dating again, seven years after the death of her husband, her friend just got married and she had to move to a new apartment, with a new roommate that she doesn't really know yet. (I hope the roommate gets a book). Plus, now that she's dating a famous person, now she's in the public eye in a different way. Her insecurities about that seemed super real. I love how they explore them and how they resolve.

I love this book.

Received an ARC from Netgalley for an honest opinion.
This was a super fun book and I loved the bakery backdrop. The characters are so fun, and you really get to know them. I loved how her mom got involved, and it seemed to help the rest of them in their grief. If you have the time pick this up when it is released, you'll really enjoy it!
