The first book focuses on the city, and the two clans squabbling with each other. Book two broadens the lens, and pulls in politics from the rest of the world, and how the other countries interact with the clans on Kekon. This book combines the best of both, with some new things to keep you guessing.

I was a little nervous at first because there were some time skips between chapters. There would be one or two important events, then a small time jump to the next big thing. I typically don’t really like time skips in general, but this was done really well. The author utilized these jumps to highlight what’s important and age up the children of the main characters.

Because of this, the first half of the book had a lot of high stakes moments all packed in together, and then we dig deep into the characters and their personal struggles in the second half. I wasn’t sure that I was enjoying it at first, but it quickly grew on me. I think if you like plot driven books, you’ll love the first half of Jade Legacy, and if you prefer character driven, you’ll love the second half.

Overall, this was an absolutely stunning conclusion to the Greenbone Saga. It broke my heart, as per usual, made me love even the most villainous of characters, and really solidified for me what it is I love about my favorite books.

I want characters to be at the center of the story. I don’t want the author to shy away from writing tragic events and making the readers feel pain. I love political stories that make me rethink everything I know about our world. I want to read books that teach me about culture, folklore, and history. And if I can get some good fight scenes as well, I’d be so unbelievably happy.

This series has skyrocketed to the top of my list of things I’d recommend, because it’s just that good. It’s got a little bit of something for everyone: magic, politics, action, family, and so much more.

This was a fitting conclusion to this series. However, I did feel it was slightly rushed. Overall, I loved the Green Bone Saga and the world and characters that Fonda Lee has created. It is definitely one of my top favorite fantasy series of all times. I will be rereading again for sure in the near future.

Honestly, the only reaction I have to this book is that I was right to be scared because this book wrecked me (emotionally). I grew so attached to this family and every single terrible (and weirdly justified) thing they'd ever done. Yes, Hilo is a murderer. But I STILL cared for him! I could see how much he cared for his family. And I could see how much he grew! It's literally unfathomable how much I understood these characters, even when they did terrible things.

I especially love the relationship between the women of the family. It was great to see powerful women in their own ways working together and using each their strengths to help their clan.

The politics were so interesting and the whole book played in my head like a super intense slower paced tv show. By the end of the book, I was sobbing! Especially in two specific scenes that actually destroyed me. I especially loved how the journey went full circle by the end (still hate Bero though).

This trilogy honestly isn't for everyone. It's cut throat and dives deep into a lot of heavy things. It took me forever to get into the right mood to finally let this book consume me. But it was so worth it!

Superb completion of the trilogy! It started strong with the very unique magic system I devoured, continuing strong with a masterfully crafted ending! Family drama, human nature, and very human desires braided into each other constantly keeping the readers on the edge!

This is easily the best book in the Green Bone trilogy. I was amazed and in awe of the writing, both the vivid descriptions and the character depth and development. The emotional depth of this story is not to be missed. I found myself so deeply and emotionally invested in the feelings of these characters that I thought about them when I couldn't read this book, counting the moments until I could revisit their world and find out how this amazing series would end. I will say that I didn't love the second book in the series, but in Jade Legacy, the reader gets everything they need and want -- the epic conclusion of a wonderful series!

This was a mostly satisfying ending to this trilogy. I enjoyed the politics and the mob storylines, but the ending of this felt very rushed.

WHAT an ending. It was so good and so satisfying. This book made me feel joy and hope and sadness and anger and confusion and basically the entire spectrum of emotion. I don’t know how Fonda Lee managed to weave a multi-generational, decades long story so well. It is truly a masterful work and I know the Kaul family and the No Peak clan will live in my mind and my heart for a long time. A masterpiece.

Fonda Lee’s Green Bone Saga has already established itself as one of the best fantasy series being written today. Because of that expectations for the final installment of the trilogy were high. Jade Legacy is the epic conclusion to the tale of the Kaul clan and the powerful “green bone” warriors of Kekon. The “green bone warriors” use the magical properties of jade to enhance their fighting abilities as they navigate a gang-controlled world where Wuxia meets The Godfather.

However, referring to Jade Legacy as a conclusion seems almost a misnomer. Jade City established the mechanics of the world and introduced us to the web of characters; Jade War intensified the political and power-fueled conflicts to boiling points. Instead of racking up to an epic blow-out, the final book in the trilogy instead opts to simmer the tension throughout a story that spans decades. Jade Legacy embraces the transition from family drama to the generational saga.

There is true mastery in Lee’s pacing. Jade Legacy’s timeline is sprawling. It picks up in the aftermath of events in the previous novel covering two generations of the Kaul family. However, at no point does the story seem to drag. Rather, Lee expertly manages to maintain a sense of urgency and impending intensity throughout the novel. If anything, the length of the novel only helps raise the stakes. We get to see the politics and structure of Janloon — and the Kaul family — shift and move in real-time. Lee lets us sit with the characters, their decisions, their deliberations. Tension holds, sometimes for one charged scene, sometimes across several years.

What’s remarkable is the interplay between the personal and the political in Jade Legacy. The story of the Kaul family is inextricably linked with a story of power, imperialism, capitalism and tradition. But they never feel hollowed out or flat. Approaching a story like this runs the risk of reducing characters to metaphors for a larger thesis. Jade Legacy is all the more effective for its insistence on being as character-driven as it is politically sweeping. We have come to know Hilo, Shae, Wen and Anden well over this trilogy. Most series would treat their final book as a closure, wrapping up arcs and exploring conclusions. Jade Legacy, however, wades in deeper. The character work is rich and rewarding, as we see the Kauls and develop in front of us, altered by time and circumstance that we see unfold alongside them.

It is rare to capture a world so detailed and immersive. Lee pulls this off whilst also providing such incisive critique of imperialism and colonization. Jade Legacy is certainly a crowning achievement of the Green Bone Saga. It cements the trilogy’s place as an all-time great in the realm of SFF literature.

I put off reading this for so long because I wasn't ready to say goodbye to my favorite cast of characters. Thank you Fonda for creating this world and these characters that I will treasure for many years to come. This ending was everything I could have hoped for and more. I cried, I screamed, and I smiled. If you haven't picked up this series yet, you must!

The No Peak clan has been battered by war and tragedy, and we see their story conclude in Jade Legacy. The end is even more violent and dramatic than the prior books.

What sticks with me most is how Lee makes the Kauls somehow sympathetic and terrible at the same time. Hilo’s acquisition of Niko in the second volume really cemented his for me, and it continues here.

The downside to the volume, if there is one, is how quickly time passes and how many events are skipped over. It's hard Hopefully the TV series will make time to linger on these moments.

An incredible conclusion to Fonda's Green Bone Saga. In this book, she beautifully wrapped up the lives that we've been following for decades. One of the most satisfying endings to a series I've ever read.

Fonda Lee is simply a genius - the other installments were amazing but this was a whole new level. The amount she was able to cover in this book was fantastic and it truly read like a movie. So impressed and I love that she really went there.

What Fonda Lee has achieved with this series is truly remarkable. I cannot overstate the sheer scope of this series and its world building, Fonda is nothing short of a genius for the careful pacing of this installment which spans over 20 years. With the Kauls, Lee has introduced me to a world and characters I will truly never be able to forget. The Kauls are complex, fallible badasses who grow and evolve in such interesting ways over the course of this trilogy.

I want to say that Jade City is one of my favorite books of the year 2021 and that I really loved Jade War. I was incredibly excited to receive an eARC of Jade Legacy.🤩

I dont know what happened here. I am disappointed because unfortunately I didn't love it as much as I would have love to. My first reaction while reading the first few chapters was my happiness for meeting these characters again. I strongly believe that Fonda Lee is great at writing compelling characters and this family is one of the best I've read. 💕

I unfortunately found myself a bit bored at time or just overwhelmed. I usually love political intrigues but I think it was just way over my head and i was struggling to remember every minor characters, places and various plots.

I liked the ending and how everything concludes but I think I was remembering the time when Hilo was fighting in the streets and it was just so cool and all. Now it was other characters that I was not really attached to. My heart was broken a few time and I almost threw my ereader at the wall at some point because I was scared for some characters and I didn't want them to suffer. 🥺

I still loved the book but I was disappointed for not loving it more, like the other two.😢

I just finished Jade Legacy. Honestly, that trilogy is just beyond impressive. Each book is super different and I don't think anybody could predict where book 3 would be going from book 1. There is not one thing that happens in Jade Legacy that I would have guessed at the end of Jade War. The sheer scope, the imaginativeness, the bold choices of where to focus and how to use the alloted page count, the themes it is dealing with, the expert-*expert*- characterizations. I don't think JL hit the high heights of my all time favorite books, but I was just constantly impressed and along for the ride. The book made me cry separate three times, which is a lot. Everyone compares this series to the Godfather but I thought even starting with Jade City it was more like The Wire, and the thing Jade Legacy reminds me most of is the scope and ambition and themes of The Wire, even if they are following different types of things by the end. I also think the series is kinda presented as action heavy with the kung-fu tag, but the restraint for when to employ fights is incredible. There are books that come around that just shake things up, that take the genre in a different direction. I imagine the people who were reading Tolkien, who were reading Jordan or Hobb, who were reading La Guin or Rothfuss, who were reading Martin right when they first came out, knew that something special was in the making. Those are some hefty names, and we are never getting another Tolkien or Martin, but I really believe that in five years, ten years, 20 years, people will be releasing incredible fantasy books and citing Fonda Lee as their biggest influence. I have read a classic in the making.

(Better late than never!) This was an incredible book. I loved the intricate familial relationships and how they intertwined with the plot itself. I think my favorite aspect is how this book (and series) shows that epic, secondary world fantasy can be done in a setting that is analogous to our modern day.

Summing up this behemoth is a challenging task, but significantly less so than the task Lee had to write this epic culmination of the Greenbone Saga, and decades of failures and successes for the No Peak clan. Jade Legacy has to be one of the best series finishers I've read, and while there were tears aplenty on the journey of reading this book, I can't help but to feel at peace with the ending as I closed the book. The world-building continued to expand in this installment, while still feeling immersive and fully realized. The character development was absolutely unmatched, and the pacing was excellent, especially considering the amount of time this book covers. If I had any complaint, it would be that the series continues to be a bit male-centric, and I wish some of the women characters were given a bit more--specificlally Jaya--and were more developed. Nonetheless, a book that will stay with me for years to come.

I'm an honestly devastated that this series is over! I haven't read a lot of adult high fantasy in my life, and thought it just wasn't the genre for me, but this series absolutely changed my mind. The way that Fonda Lee crafted these characters and this world in a way that challenges the reader but also makes you never ever want to leave is just amazing. This book so perfectly wrapped up the series and all the characters I couldn't have asked for more. I loved how even though sometimes what happened is not what I thought would happen or even what I wanted to happen, she wrote it so wonderfully I couldn't help but love it. Jade Legacy is a stunning conclusion to one of the best series I have ever read in my entire life. The character development was absolutely incredible and I cried with them like the Kauls were my own family. The plot was the perfect amount of action, politics, making me cry and family relations. Fonda Lee has the ability to make you feel strong emotions (you can read this as almost faint while reading) for each of her characters, whether strong love or hate. This shows how strong of a writer she is and how I'll read literally everything that comes out of her brilliant mind.

The reason it took me so long to write this review is bc I didn't realize it was a third book. And though thoroughly engaging in its own, about 15% in I was like, no I need to read the others first. Not bc I was confused but bc I was enraptured. I'm glad I did. Amazing Trilogy. Highly recommended. I'm annoyed I came to it so late but glad I did!
