I am a huge Caraval fan and wanted more on The Prince of Hearts, so I was very excited to see Once Upon a Broken Heart in my pre-approved list. I read it immediately and loved it!

This is the first in a two-part series spin-off, and the main character is actually Evangeline Fox, a rather silly and impulsive young girl who believes she is madly in love with a young man set to marry another. In desperation, she makes an ill-advised deal with The Prince of Hearts, Jacks, who is fresh from his own rejection by his "true love" Donatella in Finale. Of course, her deal goes sour as Jacks cannot be trusted, and the story takes off on a number of wild twists and turns. Jacks makes less of an appearance in the first part of the book, but then is around more in the second half. Evangeline grows up as the story progresses, and starts to realize some hard truths. The ending is quite the cliffhanger, but anticipation is sweet.

Jacks is just as fun as he was in the Caraval books, Evangeline is a character worth rooting for, and, as always, the writing is descriptive and imaginative. I think it's actually toned down a bit here from some of the metaphors that were rampant in the Caraval books. Garber is honing her prose and it shows.

Firmly in the YA genre, and a worth addition to the Caraval collection.

For as long as she can remember, Evangeline Fox has believed in true love and happy endings…until she learns that the love of her life will marry another.

Desperate to stop the wedding and to heal her wounded heart, Evangeline strikes a deal with the charismatic, but wicked, Prince of Hearts. In exchange for his help, he asks for three kisses, to be given at the time and place of his choosing.

But after Evangeline’s first promised kiss, she learns that bargaining with an immortal is a dangerous game — and that the Prince of Hearts wants far more from her than she’d pledged. He has plans for Evangeline, plans that will either end in the greatest happily ever after, or the most exquisite tragedy...

First let me say, BSKDORBWODKF!!!!
This DID NOT feel like real life!! I emailed the publisher @flatironbooks on May 5th inquiring after an ARC of OUABH. I promptly forgot about it lol because I have the memory of a goldfish. Then I checked my emails on June 10th, to find a response and A NETGALLEY EIDGET ASSIGNED TO ME!!!
To say I screamed is putting it mildly LOL I swear my heart stopped for a few seconds!!
I absolutely adored this book. Jacks is…..delicious lol
There is really no better word to describe the charming and broody fate. The tension was palpable. Evangeline is such a treasure. I loved her little snippy comments and how she never let Jacks push her around! I devoured this book in 2 days! I was not surprised by how much I loved it! @steohaniegarber weaves literal magic into her stories!

Garber does it again! I could barley put the book down and finished it within mere hours. Jacks is quite the character and I've absolutely loved getting to know him better. Can I get book 2 now?

*Thank you to the Publisher, Stephanie Garber and Netgalley for an E-ARC of "Once Upon A Broken Heart" in exchange for an honest review*

Ahhh, I was SO excited to return to the world of "Caraval" in "Once Upon A Broken Heart". This is Jack's book. He was one of my favorite characters from the series and I loved getting a better look at him.
