Beautifully, heartbreaking art and story. Loved this book just as much as I loved the others in the series!

Thank you Netgalley for letting me read this book in return for an honest review.

WARNINGS: Animal blood, animal fighting and animal death

This is very 'circle of life' and shows the outback through the eyes of a Mastiff. It shows the violence between animals as well as the food chain. This book has no writing within the story itself but the beautiful art has a brilliant narrative and it works. I do not like animal violence and this affected me emotionally but it was still really good!

This was cute, I didn't expect it to be the way it was. But it was a pleasant surprise either way. I won't go into too many spoilers but I enjoyed it.

I must say.. I was a bit disappointed by this.
The art, the drawings, the shapes, they're all so beautiful and life-like, you're right there in the Australian wilderness and the quick dive in the climate change issue at the end was a very pleasant and interesting addition to the graphic novel.

The story was less.. interesting? We mainly follow this mastiff who tries to protect a man and other weaker animals from predators; he's alone, travelling from forest to more deserted places, alwats alone. That is, until he finds his "love".
It was very short, I literally flicked through the whole thing in 5 minutes - also because there is no text, it's a silent graphic novel. It captured both the beauty and the brutality that characterize nature. But even despite its shortness it was quite repetitive and too quick at the same time in its final stage.

NOTE: I received a free preliminary, and likely unedited copy of this book from Netgalley for the purposes of providing an honest, unbiased review of the material. Thank you to all involved.

A few weeks ago, I read another graphic novel by Brremaud called Brindille, that I enjoyed quite a bit. It was a simple but effective fantasy book that had great art and interesting characters, in that review I stated that I wanted to get another Brremaud book under my belt, so here we are with Love: The Mastiff. It appears that the author has produced an entire series of these books on various animals, and if this is like the others, they appear to be heroic stories featuring nature as protagonist, antagonist and everything in between. These are marketed to children, but this one does have a small amount of blood in it, so keep that in mind if you plan to purchase this for a younger child. I’m dating myself here, but this reminds me of Benji, Homeward Bound, or Milo & Otis without the spoken dialogue.

"A loyal Australian hunting dog finds himself alone in the outback when his master is bitten by a poisonous snake. He must venture across the dangerous outback to find his way home alone. The fifth volume in the lavishly illustrated, award-winning series of wordless wildlife graphic novels, each depicting a day in the life of different wild animals, told through the dramatic lens of Disney-esque storytelling, like a nature documentary in illustration."

“I’m tired of these Motherf%$#% snakes in this Motherf%$#% outback” – The Mastiff, probably. All kidding aside, this book has no text bubbles in any way whatsoever, the book is presented as a silent nature documentary of a hunting dog faced with the plight of making it back home, alone. There are scenes that, despite the subject matter, really stir emotions in the reader. The mastiff has to battle every bad thing we hear about Australia, including all manner of poisonous snakes. Truthfully, if anything, that is my one takeaway about this – Australia seems insanely full of evil snakes, hellbent on killing anything they come across. There’s a side-story involving a platypus taking care of her young, that immediately made me mad at the author in an unfounded way. “You better not…”, I said, to myself, the moment they started being in peril. Thankfully, The Mastiff is basically an animal superhero here and keeps everything safe at his own expense.

In the back of the book, there is a section on the recent Australian wildfires and global warming that was interesting. It’s cool to see a book like this tell what is ostensibly a survival hero story, then come with a PSA at the end GI Joe style, I thought that was a nice touch.

If you have older kids interested in nature, or comics I would definitely recommend this. Even in a classroom, something like this would have been cool when I was younger. I mentioned blood earlier, and largely its all contained to a few instances where the Mastiff has to defend himself from either snakes or Dingos, and takes justice into his own paws. it’s nothing gratuitous, but that does need to be a consideration. I enjoyed this book quite a bit, and hope to read more of these as he produces them!

Do you want a niche book that's got style? Love: The Mastiff is a story without words! It's a graphic novel following a mastiff on his adventure. The book is packed full of absolutely gorgeous and stunning illustrations. It's breathtaking and absolutely lovely. I wasn't expecting a book with no words, but I was floored.

The book is sad - a hunting Mastiff's owner dies and he must find his way back to civilization. The dog fights valiantly to protect his owner, but unfortunately... It doesn't work. There's lots of pain and struggling in it, so don't let your heart be squashed.

I highly recommend this book if you're looking for something a little different! What a powerful story.

Three out of five stars.

Thank you to NetGalley and Diamond Book Distributors for providing me a free copy of this book in exchange of an honest review.

This graphic novel had beautiful artwork and is full of Australia’s amazing animals. It does feature life and death so it might be too much for younger kids but older kids will love it.

Love: The Mastiff was absolutely beautiful! It appears that he went hunting/hiking with his master who got bitten by a snake and died as a result. Love then had to brave the dangers of the outback for his long journey home. I’m concerned because Love’s own snakebite seems to be an unresolved issue, but overall, I greatly enjoyed the storyline and the stunning visuals!

Oh my gosh, there's something in my eye! This was beautiful!! A wordless graphic novel told like a nature documentary, about a dog who's master is bitten by a snake out hunting, and the dog has to find his way home. Along the way we catch glimpses of the beautiful and brutal lives of native Australian wildlife. And this definitely doesn't shy away from the brutality of nature and the precarious nature of survival as an animal in the wild, so be prepared for mild animal gore and death. Gosh I was so freaking worried about those little playpus babies lol! This story is kind of sad but also really beautiful. The art is stunning. At the end there is information about climate change and practical ways to help, which seem geared towards a younger audience. Overall I thought this was really lovely.

This is my second experience with this series. I have checked Love: the Tiger out from the library several times for my son, we both love how much story can be told with pictures only. Love: The Mastiff does the same thing. Without a single written word there is a clearly told story that doesn't shy away from reality. We get to see the beauty and danger in nature; the fight for survival between predator and prey. The chain of events in this story are very sad (the owner of the mastiff is killed by a snake to begin), yet the tenacity of the dog also inspires hope . It is quite an accomplishment for the author/artist to be able to tell such a full story without any words. I want to read all the titles in this series.

ARC Copy...Highly lavish and oozing with natural wonder and danger of the Australian outback. All of done with out words yet I could follow with the narrative's drama and emotions.

This graphic novel was beautiful! The story was unique in that it was told exclusively through pictures, without any words at all - and every single picture was GORGEOUS! I wish that I could have each one framed and hung on my wall. I read this as an ebook and can only imagine what the print book will look like. This novel is part of a series of wordless wildlife graphic novels, each depicting a day in the life of different wild animals. This one was the story of a loyal, Australian Mastiff who is out hunting with it's master. When it's owner is bit by a snake, it goes on a grand adventure to try to find it's way home, meeting many different animals along the way. It was a quick "read," due to the lack of words and I enjoyed studying every picture and experiencing the story in a very visual way.

The book is out June 15th! There are 4 other books before this one in the series as well to check out while you wait! I know I will!

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an eARC in exhange for my honest review.

A very engaging wordless graphic novel about a dog's journey. A great addition to any younger learner's library as this facilitates great discussion.

I'm a huge fan of Brremaud's art style... I think I'll pick up pretty much anything by him just t be able to stare at the beautiful illustrations.

This short graphic novel was about a dog going home. It had a weird concept as there was no dialogue at all in the book. The design was fantastic, however I have found the plot a little confusing to follow with every panel jumping to another animal. I think this could have been working better on movie.

Like the title, Love: The Mastiff, a silent graphic novel, tell us a story about a courageous Mastiff -a type of guard dog breed- continue to find his path after his master death. Set in Australian wild life backgrounds that very beautifully drawn, the Mastiff journey isn't smooth sailing. He failed to protect his master body from wild dogs and being misunderstood from a group a kangaroos at first, but with his bigheartedness, he always do his best to protect others, included save a kangaroo that attacked by wild dogs. The Mastiff's journey and his struggle to help others continues, until he find a family that loves him. From the Mastiff, I learned that love can give us courage to protect others and don't be afraid to share our love to another ❤️
