Laura Snider kicks off the “Ashley Montgomery Legal Thriller” series with hutzpah. Ashley Montgomery is at once kick ass and vulnerable. She is the defense attorney that you want even if you don’t want to live her life.

Snider shows us what small town mentality can be like and I am not even sure I am correct in stating that. Ignorance is everywhere, not just in small towns. I was constantly shaking my head in frustration over Ashley’s treatment in her hometown. The fact that she still practices...kudos.

Then on top of all of this, Snider throws in a humdinger of a mystery. I thought I had figured it out, but then I didn’t and that is a good thing. The twists and turns and in your mind “gotchas” were plentiful.

I love the friendships formed and worked on in Unsympathetic Victims. The mystery is the bonus and the real story is how we choose to live and when we decide to trust in people and life. Ashley isn’t the only one who has to jump hurdles in this story and that is what makes it great.

Snider gives us plenty of characters to keep us in town for awhile as the secondary characters are unique.

I cannot wait for the next murder or crime to happen because Ashley and Katie will chase down all leads...no matter how dangerous.

I received an ARC of this book and I am writing a review without prejudice and voluntarily.

I am a new fan of Laura Snider! I read the second book in this series first, and as soon as I got done reading it I knew I needed to read the first book, even if I did know what happened already. Knowing what would happen didn't lessen the entertainment and my interest in this book! It was still really riveting and I read it in one weekend! I can't wait for her next book! New Fave Author!

"When successful public defender Ashley Montgomery helps acquit yet another client, people in small-town Brine, Iowa are enraged. Following the verdict, a protest breaks out — and the hated defense attorney quickly finds her life in danger."

This is a mixed bag for me. I liked the book but some of the things that happened didn't seem to be realistic. Without giving away spoilers, I will do my best to share them. First up most of the characters have very intense personalities that seem over the top, such as "with me or against me" thought process. The county attorney and lead prosecutor appears to have control over the police department, which seems odd. The end was also abrupt unless it is written that way for a second book to follow.

The storyline was good, but I would have liked to see the characters fleshed out to be less one dimensional. On the other hand it also shows how people are today. They don't read anything to find out the facts. They accept innuendo and lies as facts.

Brine, Iowa is in an an uproar, when public defender Ashley has gotten another not guilty verdict. Things gets worse when murder happens of one of her clients and she is the suspect. The tension, the fear of who to trust, one pick up as you read the story. Good series with believable characters. Given ARC by Net Galley and Severn River for my voluntary review and my honest opinion

Public defender Ashley Montgomery finds herself in an unpopular position, defending people who the public finds “guilty” is not the best job in the world, but one that Ashley takes seriously, she doesn’t have to like or agree with her clients. Police office Katie Mickey has a very black white approach to guilty and not guilty, and is not a fan of Ashley.
2 women unlikely to be friends, but money, corruption, family loyalty is stirring the towns pot and makes these 2 to allies.
Great 1st book in a new series, started reading and wished I could have read through the night. Looking forward to book 2 .

This book was sent to me by Netgalley for review on Kindle. Mystery and intrigue...character driven...unlikeable characters...guessing...

Ashley Montgomery is a young, successful public defender in her small hometown of Brine, Iowa. The kind of town where everyone knows everyone’s business and gossip is worth more than the truth. The entire town turns against Ashley when she unwittingly gets a child rapist off on a technicality. Although the error is the fault of hot-headed police investigator Katie Mickey, everyone blames Ashley. Both women are strong, stubborn, and lonely. Eventually the two form a friendship and work together to figure out who’s killing victims off a list they found that includes the child rapist, his friend, and Ashley. Can they find the killer before he or she gets to Ashley?

I enjoyed the dynamic between the two leading ladies of this story. Some of the unfairness by the town and the district attorney seemed a little over the top though, but that is what makes the payback worth it in the end! I especially liked that Ashley has an Australian Shepherd. 🐶🙌

A big thank you to @laura.snider.writer for the advance copy of this book! This book will be released on July 27 and will be available on #KindleUnlimited.

Ashley is a public defender and a talented one at that, she got the guilty to be off the hook. Everyone hates her for it to the point she get death threats and two of her clients gets murdered, she could be the next one.
I liked the friendship between her and Katie and how it developed maybe a bit too fast for my liking though.
I like Ashley she was a strong character who didn’t let anyone tell her what she was supposed to do.
The plot twist were good (a bit too unrealistic sometimes and a bit of a reach) but overall I enjoyed the book and it was a good ending i could read the sequel and hope justice will be done.
