I expected this to just be a book on organizing your fridge, but it also included recipes. The pictures in the book were beautiful and the advice was helpful.

I picked up Fridge Love thinking that I would get another cook book with pretty unrealistic photographs with foods I will never make and I was very wrong! Fridge Love teaches you about how to use your fridge to the best of its ability. You learn how to prep, store and clean out your fridge so it does indeed look like the pretty photographs in the book. Why does it matter? If you are like me, your fridge is a mess and you end up tossing food out week after week because the food expires before you remember it is in there. This book offers practical advice (such as First In First Out) as well as recipes to use foods in the fridge quickly!

I picked up Fridge Love on a whim, enticed by the soothing photos of organized fridges on the cover. Kristen Hong in Instagram-famous for photos of her fridge where fruit and vegetables stored neatly in clear containers are lined up as a rainbow. These are kind of Instagram photos that make you feel calmer just by looking at them, right before the anxiety kicks in--”what do I need to do to make my fridge look like that?” In this book, she explains what to do.

This is more than a vegan meal prep book; it really does contain a lot of information about refrigerators. Hong covers the history of refrigeration, the types of cooling systems in refrigerators, and how air flow in each type determines how you should store your food. I honestly thought I knew everything that would be useful to know about putting produce in the fridge and Hong proved me wrong. In some cases, she provided the scientific reasoning for hunches I had and in other cases she disproved some long held assumptions of mine. If you are in the market for a new fridge or think that your current one is not doing all that it can, this book is for you. And don’t worry if you think it doesn’t apply to you because you don’t have a $3000 French-door fridge. She explains how to successfully use the old cheap fridge that came with your apartment just as well.

While I don’t like that this book is based around the nebulous concept of “improving” yourself, her attitude is so practical that it doesn’t feel like “diet” talk. She is frank about how much time and effort those beautiful fridges on Instagram take her. When giving advice, she always gives multiple paths for how to match your goals to your values and your actual life, instead of impossible aspirations. If you can do nothing else, she provides some very basic starting points to meal prepping and fridge management, such as cutting up snacking vegetables and putting them at eye level or making overnight oats and nothing else. While she herself follows the Fuhrman nutritarian Fuhrman diet, her approach is to meet the reader where they are.

The big question for a book like this--would I buy it? In this case, I think I will. The recipes, while appropriate for someone new to veganism, are not useful to me, but the reference sections are. When I get groceries each week, I often search the internet for how to store each vegetable. It would be nice to have such a thorough countertop reference instead. My fridge is also on its last legs and one day I will need a new one. Her breakdown of all the types of fridges and how useful the various amenities are in real life will be helpful when the day comes that I have to finally face the wall of steel in Lowes. This book fills a need I wasn’t even sure I had until reading it.

Fridge Love by Kristen Hong is a fantastic resource that helped me understand how I can make a huge difference with my food preparation and storage. The way Ms. Hong organizes the information is so helpful to the reader whether you want to utilize the pivotal information about the various types of refrigerators and placement of food items in the fridge or availing yourself of the 100 clear and creatable recipes she also includes. This book will remain a resource for me to refer to over and over! So many great tips! Thank you to NetGalley, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and Ms. Hong for the opportunity to review this advanced copy.

I never thought that I'd learn so much new material about an item that I use everyday. This book not only has instagram worthy photos to give off some fridge envy, but provides so much basic information about how to maximize the use of your fridge and the storage of your food that provide healthier lifestyles and choices. Really impressed!

This is a lovely book that would make a terrific gift for someone who is beginning a nutritarian or plant-based lifestyle. There is a ton of fridge info (really!), as well as tips on organization, meal prep, etc. There are some easy-to-prepare recipes, too. (The unfried rice and hummus are favorites at my house.) If you've enjoyed the Hello Nutritarian blog, you will like this a bunch.

Fridge Love by Kristen Hong

So this book just came up at the perfect time for me... I am in the middle of a bit of a lifestyle change (meaning I have less time to fart around in the kitchen) and I thought that I would consider meal prep as a way to get around that fussy time every day that is pre-making dinner to eating dinner. I have been a fan of Tracy Benjamin for a gabillion eons (and she seems to have mastered the process). I am not that organized.

So when this book came up as a "maybe you will like this book" option I thought... wow, from the cover it sure looks like it will be a meal prep book. Weeeeeellllllllll kinda sorta. Not saying I didn't gleen anything from this book. I mean I guess I did. I learned a little bit about where my fridge fan is, why not to block it when filling my fridge with food and condiments etc. I also learned how the air moves thorugh my fridge design to keep my food cold. That was absolutely 100% incredibly fascinating.

I didn't honestly prior to reading this book give this much of thought whatsoever. So it was really a very cool thing to learn.

The first 1/3rd of the book I guess is how a fridge (and probably your model design) operates, how to maximize it so that there is less waste of energy and resources. It was interesting for sure. The next third has a great breakdown of how to store your produce. Valuable information for sure. But not really what I was looking for. It's good information for sure, but not what I was looking for.

The pictures are very insta-pretty. Lots of rainbow set ups, not how I would fill my fridge, but pretty as hell to look at for sure.

The last part of the book is all recipes. It wasn't particularly any thing that I would actually make for us. Not that they didn't look good, but not something I would make that is for sure. I am not looking for a diet of vegan foods, which all these are. So while thumbing through it I just quickly moved through.

The author has a blog and the book is friendly and written like a blog which was not surprising at all. Her instagram is from what I can tell the source for this book. As it should be.

Did I like this book? Yes. Was it interesting? Yes. Would I suggest it... maybe. If you are looking for a recipe book with a little information about how your fridge works. Was it what I was looking for? Not at all.

If you can't say what food is in your refrigerator, you need this book. Fridge Love combines organizational strategies with recipes to demonstrate how keeping an organized refrigerator can make for a healthy and happy relationship with food.

To begin I only wish my fridge looked so beautiful! But with this book I will be making a greater effort using the tips and useful information including storage information and recipes. I especially liked the sections on stocking by your family’s needs (kids, teens, young couples) and the very informative produce storage. Not only how to store for maximum freshness but what not to store together and why. I’m not ready to go totally plant-based but adding the some of these recipes will add to my options for adding more fruits and veggies to our meals.

All in all, a very interesting book with lots of helpful information. And for those who really wish to go to a more plant based diet this book will be very helpful in your journey!

Love the cover....beautiful arrangement of food. This is a book to help you organize your fridge and how to better understand food storage. The idea is certainly gorgeous but not every fridge will look as gorgeous as the ones photographed.

What did I like? I went to the Instagram page for this nutritarian... a person whose diet selection is based on nutrient content of food. I don’t understand the correlation between nutrient content and the gorgeous refrigerator pictures but the book was interesting. The book basically helps you understand the zones of your fridge, best placement, and storage practices. Then the author gives you some recipes to help you meal prep and help you understand how food stays fresh. It’s unique and delves into food prep way more than any other food prep book I have read.

Would I recommend or buy? I’d buy a copy! Not only does the book cover how to make food last longer but gives some great vegan looking recipes that I’d love to try. The recipes need pictures too...
Which is why I only gave four stars. If your looking to make those greens last longer than this book is for you! Four stars!

I received a complimentary copy to read and voluntarily left a review!

Ok, where has this book been my entire adult life?! I'm forever buying bins and jars and bottles to keep my fridge looking like the pictures in this book but failing miserably each time I attempt it. Now I know where I've been falling short and how to put them into practice in a way that will maximize my fridge space as well as keep my food nicer for longer. I loved how the book got into the actual mechanics of how a refrigerator works, something I never really thought too much about but makes complete sense when I think about it. I've got a large subzero fridge that kept freezing my food in the back and a freezer that kept my food just on the verge of defrosting. I'm going to implement some of the things I learned in this book and see if that makes a difference. I will definitely be buying this book to keep in the house, thank you so much for letting me review it! Invaluable resource!

Are you a human being who eats food? Probably.

Do you have a working refrigerator in your home? Again, probably.

Well guess what? You need this book! Kristen Hong is the woman behind Hello Nutritarian, a website and popular account on Instagram (a Nutritarian is someone who eats a high nutrient, whole food, plant-based diet, a term coined by Joel Fuhrman MD). But you don’t have to follow this diet to use the book. Because even if you eat a steak every single day you most likely buy other food with that steak. How many of us buy produce from the grocery store, bring it home and throw it in the produce drawer, and probably forget about it? Then you fish it out two weeks later as a brown squishy mess. That’s not doing your wallet or you any good. Which is where Fridge Love comes in. This wonderful book goes over storage guidelines for dozens of individual foods, how to prep your produce, the best storage containers, and even how to care for your fridge itself. There are also more than 100 easy vegan recipes. And again, even if you don’t follow this diet we can all agree that we should be eating more fruits and veggies, so you’ll still find some recipes that appeal to you. Best of all there are tons of photographs throughout the book, which will inspire both envy and inspiration. I cannot recommend this book enough!

Thank you to NetGalley & Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for this advanced reader copy. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.

This was a great little book! It is so colorful and well researched. The photos in this book are so beautiful! I like how thorough the author was with explaining the functionality of the refrigerator! She breaks the organization and meal prepping into different groups depending on the reader's needs, The Fresh Fridge, The No-Cook Fridge, The Chopped Fridge, and the Prepped Fridge. I thought this was very thoughtful because people's needs vary. Hong, a Nutritarian, explains the diet and why she chose this lifestyle, and how she incorporates other types of cooking into her home to provide for her family, who are not Nutritarians. The recipe section in the back looks simple and delicious. My daughter is a vegetarian and I know this will be a great resource for her in the future. We are looking forward to reorganizing our fridge this summer. Thank you to NetGalley and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

This is the best resource for everything you could need to know about your refrigerator and how to organize and use it. There is so much excellent information in this book it will take a while to digest it. I would guarantee that if you follow the ideas presented in this book not only will you have the prettiest , best organized and most efficient refrigerator in town , but you will be saving money on groceries due to limiting wastes. The author even includes recipes , meal prep ideas and suggestions on containers and storage solutions. This book is a fabulous resource that you probably didn't know you need, but you do!!! The book is slightly vegan-centric but this does not detract from the valuable information (very well researched) that is included.

When I was reading this book and looking at these beautiful fridges full of all colors of the rainbow I was like, "there is no WAY, I can do this!" Well the more I read the book I think I can start with baby steps like storing each item in a better way so that I use it and it will last longer in my fridge. I hate wasting food but there are times things just get lost in the mess. I hope to use some of these tricks so food doesn't go to the compost instead of in a meal. Hong packs a lot of information in one book so be ready to get educated on how to store, prep, and eat what you buy.

Wow! I have serious fridge envy!
The author does spend time giving great information on the Nutritarian diet but this book is worth its weight in gold for the rest of the book. Besides the drool worthy pictures of neatly prepped refrigerators, it gives you tips on refrigerators themselves, best storage containers and how to buy/store/prep every kind of produce imaginable! Then there are some great recipes that can be easily modified for many kinds of diet. I will be ordering a hard copy...it is a kitchen stocking encyclopedia!
