Yes, yes, YES.

This is how you write a Disney spin-off novel. I love Mulan and I absolutely loved the way the author handled her story and the what if's of the "Happily Ever After", especially considering Mulan got less of one than most.
(It also had Li Shang and he was perfectly in character, so HECK YES)

There was so much to love about this story! I went into it wary, because I wasn't the biggest fan of the previous installment in this series and because I love Mulan so much. However, I had nothing to be concerned about.

This was a celebration of femininity, loyalty, and the importance of believing in yourself. It held true to the messages of the beloved classic, while improving upon some of the lesser aspects and proving as a valuable story for readers of all ages.

Overall, while it wasn't perfect, it did make me happy almost the whole way through and that's a complete win in my book.

Full review will be up on pop-culturalist.com closer to pub date. A retelling of Mulan! But, in this one the emperor makes Mulan his heir. This was so freaking good and I'm so excited to read what Livia writes next.

Fans of Mulan won't be able to put down the latest installment of the Queen's Council. Answering the question of what happens next, there are more adventures in store.

I really enjoyed this continuation of Disney's Mulan story. Mulan, heroine of China, has been spending her days training an all-female militia in her village. She and her militia have been working hard to help keep law and order in the area. One day an old friend, Shang, arrives to take her for an audience with the emperor. Shortly after she arrives she is given a new honor; she is now heir to the emperor. As she learns about her new role from the current emperor, she can't help but wonder what life would be like if she could become Shang's wife. When the emperor dies, Mulan is thrust into the middle of a power struggle with the court ministers. She questions herself and her ability to rule China as the ministers work in opposition to her wishes at every turn. Mulan will have to draw on all her strength and courage to become the empress China needs.

This is the best Mulan sequel I've read (I liked it much more than the Twisted Tales). Like in the movie(s), Mulan is still portrayed with strength, independence, the struggles of being accepted and respected as a female in a typically male role, etc. These issues escalate to a much higher level in this book (I don't want to give too much away). The Mulan characters you know and love also can be found in this book, and some new friends too.

I cannot recommend this book enough. If you love Disney movies and extensions of those classic tales, I highly recommend this read.

Pretty good! This reminded me a lot of Disney's A Twisted Tale series, it was very readable and fun to see a new take on familiar characters. I also really enjoyed the idea of a Queen's Council, strong women who help other women in times of need.

Thanks to NetGalley and Disney publishing for the e-book arc of Feather and Flame!

I loved this book so much. It seemed to me like exactly what was meant to happen after the original Mulan Disney movie ended. I enjoyed seeing how the relationship between Mulan and Shang developed all the way from the start to the end of the novel, and how Mulan was still so connected to her ancestors, especially her grandmother. It was amazing to me how the Mulan in the novel still seemed so much like the Mulan I knew from the film. I would definitely recommend this to any young readers who are Disney/ Mulan fans!
