I didn’t enjoy this book by the dialogue and language. I just couldn’t stick or have feelings about the characters until later on. I thought I would enjoy this because it’s a Wattpad book and focuses on body positivity and self-acceptance.

I've been following Wright's work on Wattpad for a few years now actually and it's been so much fun to watch her become so successful! When A Thousand Storms finished a little while ago I was genuinely so sad and The Hoodie Girl was one of the books that got me into reading on the website. While this book matches with the original plot of the original story, it's still been interesting to see Wright's writing improve over time and it's obvious that she's matured as a writer when going into this story. I'm so excited for this book to be on the shelves for the whole world to finally get to see it!

A quick read. There wasn't anything about this book that stood out for me as far as having to mention in a review. I picked this up because I too hid in a hoodie most of my teen years. This title does deal with a few hard hitting topics but overall it just wasn't for me.

this book was okay. i wouldn't call it bad but it wasn't great either. it was average, i guess. i think the best way to describe this is that it is the epitome of wattpad. it was definitely entertaining and a quick read and i understand why people would love it so much but it was nothing special to me. but on that note, there were both specific things that i liked and disliked so here we go.

PART ONE - things i enjoyed
- THE ROMANCE - as one of the focal points to the story it makes sense for me to like it and i did enjoy the progression of wren and asher's relationship. their banter was so cute and i feel like their relationship was cute, despite it being cliche. overall, i genuinely enjoyed reading it.
- CHARACTERS - i did like the majority of the characters and they did develop throughout the book, which was great to see. i don't really have much else to say about this besides such.
- DYNAMICS - both the family and friendship dynamics were everything. i think ever deserves her own point, but she was literally the best character and any scene involving her made me smile. i loved the relationship she had with the others. i also loved the relationships between both wren and asher with their mothers. but my favourite dynamic of all was probably the friendships. mia and wren had such a genuine friendship and the same can be said for brody, zach and asher. their banter was fun.
- SWIFTIE MOMENT - should this count? technically not. will i count it? yes. even before the 'about the author' section said that yuen wright was a taylor swift fan, i knew because as a certified swiftie, i caught those little references. no body, no crime, so true zach. i don't even know if they were intentional but they were there and that made me like it more.

PART TWO - things i have conflicting thoughts about
- THE WRITING STYLE - the writing style definitely changed over the book. i'm not exactly saying i didn't enjoy it because there were passages that i loved. but also, especially towards the beginning, you can see that the writing is rather telling than showing and includes unnecessary details. some passages were beautifully written though.

PART THREE - things i didn't like
- CLICHE - i don't have anything against cliches but, as i've said, this is the epitome of wattpad. as in cliches are everywhere and a lot of the time excessive. i just really didn't find this enjoyable and slightly overwhelming. it was pretty stereotypical.
- RANDOM - this may sound random but so many things randomly popped up. for example, her dad going to yale. this came up near the end and i was wondering why it came up so late. or her panic attack. that was so fleeting. i hope that doesn't seem like i didn't want her to move on or anything, it just felt fleeting to me.
GRIEF - don't get me wrong, the depiction of wren's grief wasn't bad. i just don't think we saw enough of it. it was spoken about then it wasn't if that makes sense. i would've liked to see her dive further into her memories and see her rediscover her love for painting, among other things. i don't know.
- ZACH AND MIA - i was so confused as to what was going on throughout the book. were they dating? were they not? because it felt like they were but also where? i know the book wasn't about them, so that's okay but we barely heard anything about their relationships.
- OUTDATED AND/OR CRINGY - this is more a pet peeve than anything, so feel free to ignore this, but there's two things i hated.
i ) birdie. just that. it's was cringy and i had to stop reading every time it came up. i would break up with someone on the spot if they called me birdie and i know for a fact that people a similar age would too. i know it was supposed to be cute but it really just made me dislike it.
ii ) the outdated social media references. the pinterest reference was fine but when he said 'unfollow me on twitter,' i feel like another social media should've been used. people use twitter but in my experience, it isn't with their irls and more for fandoms / stans / etc.

I guess the biggest compliment I can give this story, and the author, is that as I was reading I kept wishing my 17-year-old daughter could meet Wren just to be her friend because she's really that freaking cool! Wright gave us a beautifully written, sweet, relatable coming of age for two teenagers who truly understood the best and worst life could give. The drama is truly age-appropriate and handled in a healthy way rather than a lot of stories about beautiful barbie's and football captain bullies who destroy each other while "falling in love." The characters were three-dimensional, likable, realistic, and actually thoughtful people who acted like Sr in High School. I highly recommend the story and will be looking at and sharing Wright's other stories with my daughter and her friends.

I really liked the description of this book, and I was excited to read it. There were certain parts that were better than others, and maybe it was the ARC formatting, but it felt stunted almost. I really wanted to like it. but every time I started to get into it, I felt like everything was trying too hard, or was a little bit too cliche.

Rated 3 stars up from 2.5.

I wanted to like this a lot more than I did. Wren is a girl who hides under an oversized red hoodie because of reasons that will be revealed later. But it's clear there is some trauma in her past that makes her seek invisibility. She's a good student, and that's all she seems to care about at school.

Asher is a popular jock for some sport I really can't remember what it is now (sorry!). But he's good-looking and has tons of friends, so of course he's destined to suddenly notice the quiet girl.

If I sound annoyed it's because I am. I was reading and just waiting and waiting for the next level to be reached, but it's very much the cliched story without real depth. There is an attempt at depth, mind you, but it never feels authentic. Ditto their so-called meet-cute. Ditto their romance. I seriously don't understand why they like each other, other than teen hormones. There's even a scene where he's listing all the things he likes about her, and they're all very superficial.

There's also a very weird out-of-touch feeling with this book. For the longest time I couldn't understand where or when it was taking place. The main character doesn't have a phone or barely uses it or something. Not enough of the teenagers use phones! There's also talk of Pinterest and some other sites that I don't think teens use. I think I eventually realized this was set in the U.S. but it doesn't feel like it.

Once they get to the romance stage, I was utterly over it. This is some promposal-level stuff with about as much creativity, and I just couldn't understand the very conventional way everything was playing out.

Anyway, I know this was an uber-popular book on Wattpad, and it's a first book for Yuen Wright, so well done, Yuen! I think it could still use some work making that leap.

All that said, this was advertised as for those who like the "Kissing Booth" movies, which are also utterly ridiculous and superficial, but those are wildly popular Netflix films. So don't listen to me, or if you do, know what you're getting yourself into.

Wow wow wow, what an amazing book. I read Hoodie girl in less than 2 days and I am absolutely obsessed with this book. This is your classic high school teens fall in love. Boy plays sport, boy gets injured. Girl is shy, girl comes out of her shell ....and we all know where it goes from there. Not gonna lie I am a sucker for high school romance so I obviously loved this book. As well as romance the book also talked about mental and physical health which is important to have in high school books.

It's an entertaining story, but it's nothing memorable, because we see the same formula of "you're not like the other girls" and that's already a thing of the past and it's tiring to see it again.
The characters are good, but they didn't end up convincing me and the truth is I don't stay with any of them, because as I mentioned above, it wasn't a memorable read.
The writing I must admit that it is very good, there were many moments in which the story flowed very fast and made me advance with the reading, but I have to emphasize that there were many moments that were not at all interesting and had much prominence and the moments that I thought were going to be touched more, ended up barely mentioned...

I really liked the concept of this book, however I ended up stopping this book at about 54% and marking it as DNF/on-hold because of a few things that were making it more difficult than enjoyable to read. I realize with ARC's there can be typos or other issues that will be fixed in the final draft, but there were some weird page-break markings/random numbers in the middle of paragraphs that were causing a disconnect with reading. I believe this was originally posted online and so it felt like this was never edited from being online. It also read a bit like a fanfiction, which is not bad, but there were some really strong cliché's that were contradicted in different chapters. Just random inconsistencies, like someone being described as wearing a white shirt on one page and then a black shirt on the next page, which is not a big deal but it was distracting. I know with edits and polishing this will probably be a very solid book, because the concept is really cute & popular, but for me there was too much that was bringing me out of the book for me to continue reading at this time.

This book book is AMAZING. I fell in love with the characters right from the start. I loved how well written this book was, and how different the characters came to life as I read this book. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for fun witty romance.

This book was very cliche. The whole shy girl meets a popular boy and has an extremely extroverted best friend. But sometimes you can tolerate some cringey dialogue and romance. Some things I really disliked were how the main character’s trauma was described, and how there were a few small plot holes. However this is a very quick read and if you are looking for a book that’s engaging and adds to your goodreads goal, you should definitely check out this book. I recommend this book for ages 13+.
TW: mentions of parental abuse, ptsd, losing a family member.

Disclaimer: I will post about this on my bookstagram page @meetcuteromancebooks.

I remember reading this on Wattpad ages ago and it's so cool that Wren and Asher's story is going to be out in public!! I plan on writing a full review on my bookstagram page and Goodreads closer to the date.

Unfortunately, The Hoodie Girl by Yuen Wright suffers from being a bit too cliche for my taste. It was stereotypical, it doesn't necessarily stand out.

The truth is – this was the same old story I’ve heard a gazillion times before and that was worse than all the other problems I had with this book combined. There was nothing in it that would make me remember it in a few months.

The characters were fine but nothing special. The writing was good for the most part, but it had some weird moments. The stuff I didn’t care about got a lot of space, while some pretty important things were barely mentioned.

All in all, there was nothing particularly horrible about this book. I just didn’t care.

Thank you to the #NetGalley and to the author and publisher for providing me with an ARC of The Hoodie Girl by Yuen Wright in exchange for an honest review.

This was a pretty stereotypical high school love story. I felt the characters lacked depth and felt completely unrealistic. It was a classic shy girl who gets noticed by the popular boy and her whole life changes. The story moved pretty quickly, and if you're looking for a teenage love story you might enjoy this one. It's not a long read and not entirely unpleasant.

It was an sweet love story between two teens that have not much in common with each other. It was a fast paced novel that I can enjoy within a days time. Sad to state this but the couple felt more like friends to me. I couldn’t see the romance between them at all. I also felt that this story was a bit forgettable and I might not remember this in six months time, There were also triggering issues that was brought up and I’m glad it was dealt with in a compassionate manner. Overall, it was okay story.
I received this ARC from the publisher and Netgalley for my honest review.

From the first paragraph, I knew this book would be a good one. I immersed myself into the book from the first chapter and I cannot say enough good things about this book! Honestly amazing! The writing is incredible and the plot is just one to die for. I am absolutely obsessed with this book. My favorite part would have to be the character development throughout the book. Character development is something I look forward to and this book did not disappoint.
