Any first hand account of experience with the crimes of Joseph J. DeAngelo is worth a read because the crime spree was so long and unusual. So I was happily wading through all the fake and phony "atmosphere" the author lays out, waiting for the good parts which have to include DeAngelo or else who cares, right? That's why we're here.
We're frankly not that interested in this guy's ouvre. We really, heartless as we are,. don't care about when he woke up, what mood he was in, whether the coffee maker was working, what that phone call was about or whether his sprinkler was working UNLESS any of those things has a bearing on the killer's activities. And this book is loaded with "stuff", i.e. laborious writing that has nothing to do with the crimes. Then he inserts something about the crimes. Okay.
But THEN he gets dates mixed up. OMG that's when I bailed, because if there's one thing we really don't need it's inaccuracy about these events that hurt so many people.

I like true crime quite a lot and I was very excited to read this book. Overall I liked the perspective of the book and some parts were very good. Unfortunately the story meanders a bit and that was distracting and confusing at times.

Thank you to Netgalley and publisher for an ARC

I consider myself a true crime enthusiast and after listening to podcast after podcast, studying criminal psychology, and reading countless thrillers and true crime stories, the description of this book hooked me and I wanted to love it. I stand strong on the point that this book has a great idea. I was so intrigued that this book ties in a real crime and uses the details of the crime to fictionalization it.

Cole, an investigative journalist, hears rumours that the Golden State Killer might have murdered one of his victims in Cole’s house. With the killers recent arrest, Cole is compelled deeper to find out what really happened in his house, but discovers more than he bargained for: hidden records of an accomplice. With this information, Cole must decide what to do next.

I thought there was a good amount of twists and discoveries to the story to add to the existing and true narrative of the actual crimes. I felt that at times the story was a little lost and I was sometimes confused where things were headed. I also did not love Cole as a character. I found him a little unrelatable. I did however, enjoy the overall concept of the book and the clear research on the case.

Thank you Netgalley for this ARC.

The blurb of this book really intrigued me--the Golden State Killer having an accomplice. The horrid reality of that, let alone the chilling fiction, forced me to pick up this book.

Unfortunately, it really missed the mark for me. The writing is confusing and sort of all over the place. The story was bogged down, and therefore, boring. This story has such great potential, but this book didn't do it justice.

It all begins with a house for sell. A murder that the mailman said possibly happened in Coles house. Since Cole is a journalist he sets out to see if wha the mailman said really happened.

Victim Eleven by Tom Chorneau

Cole, an ex investigator reporter, dives into several investigations when he discovered his home, which he was trying to sell, was a possible location of a crime years ago. Because of his investigating tendencies, he had to get to the bottom of this rumor. Did a crime take place in house? And was it an act of the famous Golden State Killer?

This book appealed to me as I'm an avid reader of crime and investigating novels. However sometimes I felt really lost while reading it. There were just so many crimes he was investigating at once, and with new people always being introduced it was hard to keep track of everyone and their crimes or affiliations. It got more confusing at times because some characters had multiple nicknames such as the Golden State Killer/East Area Rapist/E.A.R or Lorraine/Raine. It would have been more fluid reading if the titles/names would have been constant. Both of these issues made it slow going at times. Don't get me wrong, sometimes I was super concentrated and couldn't put the book down - but other times I was bored out of mind.

I had a hard time coming up with what I would rate this book. It was between and 2 and a 3. And I'm ultimately leaving it a 2 because of the ending. I think there could have been a prologue, or some kind of ending/wrapping of the book. I turned the last page thinking there would be another chapter and NOTHING! Not sure if that means another book? Or just bad planning? I just feel like there could have been another chapter or two wrapping up charges against those who committed crimes, resolutions in friendships/relationships, and overall just an ending to everything we just read. I just felt like I was left hanging, and that everything I was invested in for so long just didn't matter. I mean yes, without giving spoilers, everything kind of came to a conclusion in the end - but I still think a chapter or two would have been a nice wrap up of it all because again, there was A LOT going on.

Thank you Tom Chorneau, DartFrog Books and NetGalley for the advance copy to read in return for my honest review!

I wanted to add this to my list of things I’ve read on the Golden State Killer, and did. Its a well written story that kept me involved to the end. Thriller mysteries aren't usually my thing, but it was worth the read. Just thinking about there being another DeAngelo type out there is creepy. Advance electronic review copy was provided by NetGalley, author Tom Chorneau, and the publisher.

I loved the author's writing style. It almost read like the narration in one of those old detective noir style shows, but in third person. The plot itself was good and interesting, especially for anyone who follows the true crime stuff behind GSK. My main struggle was connecting to the characters. It made it hard to really be invested in the book, even though the reading was an enjoyable experience. I didn't necessarily care when I put down the book if I couldn't come back to it right away. I would absolutely read this author again because it's clear that his style works for me and maybe a different set of characters or the maturing over books could fix the parts I struggled with.

Fast paced book with a lot of drama. The political slams were a disappointment. I'd like to thank Dartfrog books and netgalley for the advanced copy.

This book had such promise. Unfortunately, the author preferred to wax poetically while believing he was profound.
Such a disappointment.
