I have long been interested in Robert E. Lee having grown up in the South and being distantly related. I have so many mixed emotions because we read about how he didn't want to fight for slavery but he lived in a state where he didn't have the ability to fight with the union but that also just doesn't seem right to me and at the end of the day, it doesn't matter what he wanted, its what he did.

I recieved an ARC from NetGalley. Thank you.

This was a treat. My first from this author. (Will NOT be my last.)

I really enjoyed the author's writing style. His prose is a joy to read! I felt like the author was talking to me. I have become really interested ion R.E. Lee and this was my first biography of him. What an interesting subject!

The author did an incredible job with the research and the writing. I learned tons from this work. It's worth reading twice as it is packed with information but in a very digestable form.

Highly recommend this work. I am trying to see where I go to next with this author.

This book is a biography of Robert E. Lee and delves more into what appears to be the conflict within Lee over secession and slavery. The book covers a lot of ground already covered in other biographies of Lee, but does spend more time on the apparent conflicts within the man himself over loyalty to the union versus state and slavery versus emancipation. As an example, he thought slavery inhuman, but kept slaves as an economic necessity to make the farm work. My take from this book is that Lee was conflicted, but chose to take the path of least resistance in each case.

I received a free Kindle copy of this book courtesy of Net Galley and the publisher with the understanding that I would post a review on Net Galley, Goodreads, Amazon and my nonfiction book review blog.

Congratulations to Allen C Guelzo for all his brilliant accomplishments! This well researched book titled “Robert E Lee” is no exception! This is the most comprehensive story of Robert E Lee, his life story and his contributions to our history, that I have personally read! He offers an in-depth view of Lee’s life, all the events that shaped his views, actions, and his character, by offering us glimpses of his thoughts in written correspondence to loved ones, military leaders, political leaders and so forth, as well others’ views and feelings about him through their correspondence, and reports of his military accounts, and personal life. In a time when it seems some people today want to erase our Country’s History, good and bad, this is the perfect book to educate oneself on this trying time in our Country’s existence! I strongly recommend everyone to add this book to their personal libraries, their schools’ libraries, and other literary groups!
