I read this thinking it was more of a gothic piece and then I got into it and it is modern day, but they are still doing things from the far past including having housemaids. I felt that the atmosphere and the language left this book very unbalanced. I liked the glimpses into the past of the housemaid's mother, however this is unfortunately just about it. The ending never ended and just kept going. This did not work. Thanks for the ARC, NetGalley.

First of all thank you to Netgalley and the author for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Ah. I wish this would have been a home run for me, as I do love a gothic setting and this definitely seemed to fit the bill!
However, I just couldn’t get into the story. It just dragged on, at least to me and I couldn’t get into it.
A flop for me :(

This story got off to a slow start but then went from 0-100 real quick. There were also no clues to the reader as to one of the reveals.

This book starts with you thinking it will be like Downton Abbey. Respectable home owners, and their demure and polite cleaners and house maids. But soon you see that its not, and then the roller coaster ride begin, and you start wondering about everything. Highly recommended for anyone who loves a read that kicks you around.

Thank you Netgalley, Victory Editing Netgalley Co-op and Sarah A Denzil for the arc of this book.

It seems like the perfect job. A well paid position as a live in housemaid located at Highwood Hall, an estate owned by the well known Howard family. It's the perfect place to live and work after a run of bad luck.
Before long, the housemaid begins to realise not all is rosy behind closed doors. She does not get along with the strict housekeeper, she has heard some unsettling things about the previous housemaid and no one will talk to her about it.
Then the package arrives. A gruesome miniature doll with her features, trapped in a dollhouse, surrounded by blood. Is it a threat? Or a warning?

The Housemaid is a tense story. A lot of suspense and twists keep it interesting even when some parts feel a bit slow.
I felt some parts of the book were a bit unbelievable and out of place. Some parts were also left a bit unclear for my liking. I didn't dislike the book but it's definitely not my favourite by this author.

3.5 stars

Here is the thing. I read books like this for fun. As in, when I need something that will read easily and smooth and won't tire my brain, but I don't expect to like it. It was the case with this one too.

The Housemaid was my first Sarah A. Denzil novel, and it definitely won't be my last! All the characters were really interesting, and the main character was easy to empathize with. I don't want to say too much and risk giving the twist away, but I will say that I've never read anything quite like The Housemaid and I highly recommend it. Thanks to NetGalley and Victory Editing for giving me the opportunity to read and review this amazing novel. : )

I felt transported to the Victorian ages, where reality and fantasy intermingled.
There was something outworldly about the writing that kept me gripped to some parts of the prose. The atmosphere was brilliant. Slightly haunted, with different shades of gray, where I was unsure about everything around the main character.

The book was verrrryyyy slow, even the audiobook didn't feel interesting. I had to switch over to the digital copy as I wanted to skip sections that were not interesting. The twist was far-fetched. Somehow there was an air of unbelievability in the book. It needed modern day suspense to make it entertaining. A lot of unanswered questions.  The subplots were not seamless.

An okay read in some parts if you were willing to hop, skip, and jump around the prose.

Fairy tale themes, goth vibes, atmosphere and a thrilling mystery make this book. There is a chilling feel the whole way through, with a slow build to not wanting to read with the lights off but wanting to know the ending! This is the first book I have read by Sarah Denzil but I’ll be looking for more of her novels now.

SHOCKING, UNPUTDOWNABLE AND MYSTERIOUS.

Emily is looking for a job and gets lucky when she gets accepted as a housemaid in the luxurious Highwood Hall. However, everything is not what it seems. Scary packages begin turning up at the doorstep and before long, it's obvious something really weird is happening at the mansion.

I love the setting, full of mystery and suspense. The mansion got me really curious and excited with its hidden doors, secret passageway and weird paintings. Emily is really strong, I must say, to work in a weird house like that. But well, all she cared about was finding out what happened to her mother. The friendship between Emily and Siobhan is amazing. I think Emily was lonely all her life and Siobhan is her first real friend. Emily's relationship with Alex was kinda weird and from the beginning I never trusted him. There was just things off about him. I'm glad she found out what really happened to her mother. Even though it was heartbreaking. Mrs Huxley who was very mean softened at the end and I think that was because she never was really a bad person. Deep down, she knew it was wrong but was stuck with doing their bidding.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this addictive suspense. If you love books about old mysterious houses, then this book is for you. Thank you very much to Netgalley, the Publisher and the author for the arc copy of the book.

This book is a little CSI, a little old school Gothic novel, a little Clue, a little Nancy Drew. I liked this book a lot.The writing is very atmospheric, and perfect for a True Crime Podcast fan.
