Leaving Breezy Street was not an easy book to listen to. Brenda takes us through her incredibly traumatic early childhood to her teen pregnancies, her many years as a prostitute and drug addict, and getting herself clean and out of this terrible lifestyle even though it's pretty mich all she'd ever known. I dont think there are really a lot of candid stories out there about prostitutes, but Brenda lets us into her life and explains why things went the way the did. She is a resilient woman, and I am glad she shared her story with us, and that she is using her traumatic life experiences to help young girls that are headed down the same path.

This is a difficult book to read due to the content of human trafficking, a variety of abuse, and prostitution. I listened to it as an audio book as the author read and told her story. It may be a difficult read but it is a very inspiring book that shows that these women can change their lives for the better. It is so hard to hear first hand how young children are already part of hard lifestyle.

Trigger warning: the language is very graphic along with detailed descriptions of rape and other types of violence against women. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing this book in exchange for an honest review.

“Leaving Breezy Street” is a hard and intriguing memoir, which may be a difficult read for some, however, may also be inspirational for others who may find themselves in similar situations on how there can be a light on the other side. I listened to the audio version of this book and the narrator was phenomenal adding to the depth and character of the memoir.

“Breezy” lead an exceptionally complex/tough life, with unimaginable childhood abuse, setting the stage for a life of continued physical and emotional abuse, drugs, prostitution, living in fear, and her various experiences on the street. I appreciated the memoir allowing the reader a glimpse into her life, the humor, her brutal honesty, and her personal journey to understanding.

A sincere thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for providing me an advance copy (ARC) of this book in exchange for an honest review. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to read this story and leave my review voluntarily

This was such a hard, yet interesting story. This is the story about Brenda Myers-Powell and her life as a drug addict and sex worker. She spares no details which can be triggering for some people so please check trigger warnings before going in to this one.

Brenda eventually was able to break the cycle and is now helping women that were in similar situations are her get out of that lifestyle as well.

I listened to it on audiobook and the narrator did such a great job and kept me engaged throughout the entire book.

Thank you for NetGalley and Macmillion Audio for an early copy for my honest review.

How do I begin? This book is explosive, in the best way possible. Brenda Myers-Powell will leave you stunned. She doesn’t shy away from anything she’s seen, done or experienced. In the frankest words possible Brenda shares her incredible story of survival and revival. Her sheer will, strength, resilience and humor through it all is inspiring. I shed tears while listening to this audio, not because Brenda cries victim but because she screams victor! Multiple trigger warnings for language, violence, human trafficking, rape, child molestation, drug use.

I absolutely recommend listening to the audio, there was SO much power in HEARING this story. Narration was fabulous. Definitely a memoir, I won’t forget.

I am curious to watch the documentary mentioned in this memoir, The Dreamcatchers. The DreamCatcher Foundation is a nonprofit founded by Brenda and her soul sister Stephanie Daniels-Wilson. It’s a survivor founded, survivor driven, and survivor focused agency fighting to end human trafficking in Chicago and its surrounding suburbs.

Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for gifting me with this amazing story. In exchange I offer my unbiased review.
