I enjoyed this book and thought the narration was great. It was definitely a slow burn kind of book. I would have definitely rated it higher, but the ending just didn’t work for me.

The Dead Husband by Carter Wilson

Twenty two years ago a horrible tragedy rocked Rose Yates life, in her small hometown of Bury, New Hampshire. Only Rose and her family know the truth about what happened.

Rose escaped into a new life in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin. Married to her husband Riley, eleven year old son Max and a career as a fictional crime writer. Her books aren’t particularly hot sellers. Riley dies tragically in what appears to be a suicide. Rose vowed to never return ‘home’ to Bury, but has no choice. She’s not excited to be around her overbearing father and crazy sister, Cora.

Returning to her childhood home that secret starts to haunt Rose all over again.

Looking into her fictional crime books do they actually have some truth to them?

Overall an okay read. Kept me interested for the most part. I did feel like it was a little too long, my interest drifted a little.

Thank you Carter Wilson, Dreamscape Media and NetGalley for the audio to listen to in return for my honest review!

I will definitely read more of Wilson's work in the future, and if the trigger warning mentioned above isn't an issue for you, I'd definitely recommend this novel.

The ending was shocking! I never saw that twist coming. I thought this book was only going to be about a dead husband, but there’s also a dark family secret that’s about to come out! This audiobook kept me wanting to listen for hours at a time. I was desperate to know what happened between Rose, Cora, and her father. The family secret was about 90% of the book and finding out what happened to Rose’s husband was only about 10% of the book. All in all I thought it was a great read!

Thank you NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for this audiobook!

A 3 stars for me

I am a bit torn. This book had a lot of potential and it is well written. I liked the characters and the story. I enjoyed However the story becomes very predictable about half way through.
The other downside is the ending. It made no sense, it felt unfinished with loose ends everywhere.

The Dead Husband is a dark and twisty kinda juicy book! A gripping thriller with a turn at the end I guarantee you won’t see coming. Family secrets can definitely tear a family apart!

After the death of her husband, Rose Yates takes her son and does the unthinkable – returns to her childhood home. Her wealthy, controlling father keeps his family close and his secrets closer. Returning home means coming face to face with the family secret that has been haunting her for 22 years.

When Rose’s sister Cora discovers that Rose is seeding the novels she writes with details from their child, the history and dysfunction of the Yates family begins to unravel in slimy little tendrils.

Although there were some dark threads and some disturbing scenes, this didn’t live up to the thriller tag. The tale took a long time to develop and there were several extra characters that didn’t really add to the story. I was able to see the truth behind the dead husband very early on, although he had next to nothing to do with 95% of the story.

The narration was well done, this just wasn’t the book for me.

You won't want to miss this heart-pounding thriller book!
I listened to this and now my ears hurt from having my buds in the entire time!
But it was worth every second!
A fast paced thriller with a good narrator! Really enjoyed listening to it!
The twist and turns are just back to back! Amazing job on the writing! Now I'm looking forward to reading more from Carter!

I’ll be honest, much of this book was too convoluted for me. I was following it and interested until the Detectives wife’s who has the same initials and the dead boy (or something like that) showed up dead. I honestly still have no idea where that storyline went.

I also don’t feel like we got a ton of resolution in the original death.. I was looking for more of a flashback scene that showed something happening between the kid and the main character or something, like maybe Cora was protecting her little sister and that’s why she’s so involved, but it turns out Cora’s just a psycho I guess?

I will say I LOVED the turn at the end with her son. That came out of the blue and I wasn’t expecting it.

I would definitely try more from this author but maybe not this narrator—- the female voices are too breathy and the male voices are a little snooty rich guy for me.

After her husband’s death, Rose and her young son have moved back to her family home in New Hampshire. It’s a place she vowed never to return to after what happened two decades earlier, but she has little choice. Now a detective convinced that Rose killed her husband has gotten wind of that long buried secret from her past. He’s out to see that Rose pays for what he believes she’s done. I liked the premise of this book, unfortunately, readers will know almost immediately what’s going on. Still, the book was well written and I liked the main characters
