The story is about a female police officer and her retiring partner working on their current case together. The two of them were able to put all of the different parts together to get the bad guys and find the female who was aiding the bad guys. The story moved along well. I do enjoy this author's writing style. I would recommend this book. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Gated Prey by Lee Goldberg is the third instalment of the Detective Eve Ronin series but it reads well as a stand-alone. Detective Ronin is partnered with Duncan Pavone, a detective who has only a few weeks to work until retirement. This police procedural takes place within the purview of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department. Most of the action occurs in gated communities in the area. Eve and Duncan’s relationship adds much to the story: the odd pair provides the reader with many funny and touching moments. The action is unrelenting and two storylines dominate in the mystery. The pages just fly by and the unexpected is consistently around every corner. It’s always interesting and more realistic when the protagonists have personal problems and flaws. It makes the characters more relatable. I thoroughly enjoyed Gated Prey and I look forward to reading more of Lee Goldberg’s novels. If you like police procedurals with a difference, this one is for you. Highly recommended. Thank you to Thomas & Mercer, NetGalley and the author for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Grated Prey by Lee Goldberg is the 3rd book in the Eve Ronin series, and another great addition. Eve and her soon to retire partner Duncan are running a sting to catch criminals. Violent home invaders are terrorizing the upper class residents. Eve and Duncan sting was successful ,but there seems to be more to the story. I found this book to be very interesting, and a wild ride, which kept me turning page after page. If you enjoy fast paced police procedural, give this book a try, you won't be disappointed. I highly recommend this book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

This is the 3rd book in the Eve Ronin series by Lee Goldberg. Eve and her partner, Duncan, are undercover on a sting operation as part of the Los Angeles County Sherriff's Department attempt to catch some home invaders in a gated community. The operation goes awry and all three of the home invaders are killed. Duncan is trying to survive up to his upcoming retirement and Eve is trying not to take offense to being despised by the force for her swift rise to detective rank. While they are working the home invasion case, they get called to a routine stillbirth call. Eve can't get over the feeling that all is not as it seems and can't let the case go and there are definitely some unexpected plot events to be revealed.
This book reads a little like a tv crime drama and has a humourous twist in that Hollywood is knocking on Eve's door to develop a tv series about her life, a road she is not willing to go down.
Goldberg does a great job of letting us get to know how Eve's mind works out the details of the crime and develops her character a little more in each book. It will be interesting to see how she copes with Duncan's eventual retirement and a new partner and I'm sure Goldberg has already got something worked out for that. He is a great storyteller without revealing too much and still able to keep the reader wanting more.
Looking forward to the next instalment!

Another great installment in the Eve Ronin series; fun, engaging and just the right length!

Eve Ronin is still having to prove herself as a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s detective. Even after solving several cases and working as hard as possible, many don’t believe she deserves her position. Her soon to retire partner, Duncan Pavone, is with her running a sting to try and catch a group of home invaders and thieves in Calabasas mansions. Their trap works a little too good, leaving the thieves dead and almost costs Eve and Duncan their lives. Even though the case seems closed, Eve has many unanswered questions and continues to dig deep into the case to figure out if anyone in the department could have been involved as payback for her takedown of corrupt deputies in the department. Eve refuses to back down puts her in more danger.

The Eve Ronin series is a fun favorite of mine. The characters are fun and realistic with their animosity towards Eve and how she got her position. It wouldn’t be real for me if they all took her in and it was sunshine and roses. Goldberg did a great job of capturing Eve and her emotions through it all. Her relationship with Duncan is great and the playful banter that they have is fun to read. One of the things I love about these novels is they are just the right length, not too long, not too short. Eve is tough but she also shows emotions when she is by herself and doesn’t just try and play off the hurtful things the others in the department do to her like it is no big deal. Eve’s biggest flaw though is her inability to deal with her issues; she works too hard and tries to do almost everything herself because of her distrust of colleagues. Overall, this was a very enjoyable book, nothing stands out to make it great though. Eve needs to have some personal growth in the next book and I’m hoping that is the direction it will go. I recommend this book to those that like a good mystery that is quick and easy to read but doesn’t mind a little bit of harsh language.

I received a complimentary copy of this title from the publisher. The views and opinions expressed within are my own.

I am an impatient mystery/thriller reader, often skipping to the end to see who is the culprit. However, the skillful writing of Lee Goldberg kept me reading without cheating. His humour, action-packed scenes, and dialogue that flowed so well kept me reading.

This book had me looking for more of the author's works, but I think I will settle for waiting for the next installment in this captivating series.

Eve Ronin is back. This time around she and her partner are running a sting to catch a gang of thieves performing home invasions in an upscale gated community. The sting works, though things definitely don’t go as originally planned and people end up dead. While still trying to wrap up this case, she gets called in on another case involving a woman who has given birth to a stillborn. Are either of these cases as simple as they seem or is there more here than meets the eyes? Fast-paced and action-packed, Gated Prey is an other excellent entry into the Eve Ronin series. Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the opportunity to read and review an eARC of Gated Prey.

Everything that makes young detective Eve Ronin appealing to readers is exactly what makes her resented by her colleagues: she got a lot of publicity for decking an abusive celebrity, leading to quick promotion over officers (mostly men) senior to her. Even more galling is Eve’s success as a new detective despite her inexperience, not to mention the TV series soon to be based on her life. It’s a recipe for tension, but she manages to get along with a soon-to-retire senior detective as her parter. Here they pose as residents in a fancy-schmancy house in a gated community, as part of an undercover operation to solve a series of home invasions. Of course everything goes wrong, people are killed, and our hero barely escapes with her life. Eve is left to wonder whether the series of missteps leading to this outcome is truly accidental or if bitter colleagues deliberately hung her out to dry. Her investigation reveals plenty of shady dealings, she encounters plenty of crazy only-in-LA situations along the way. The author keeps the story moving and the scenes lively, with entertaining dialogue throughout. This is the third book in an appealing series, but it can easily be read as a standalone. I look forward to the next installment.

Gated Prey by Lee Goldberg
Eve Ronin #3

Younger than most with fewer years under her belt, Detective Eve Ronin leapfrogged over older more seasoned officers to get the job she is in. She has media presence that she would happily have avoided because her true focus is the job and not the publicity, popularity, politics, and celebrity game that seem to hound her. She wants to solve murders, get the bad guy, and see justice done. This book has two major cases to solve while her personal life has a few things churning in the background.

What I liked:
* Eve: young, dedicated, focused, sees in black and white, wants to solve cases, burns the candle at both ends, has been injured more than once on the job, has an interesting family, is a good partner, has good gut instincts and follows them.
* Duncan: Eve’s partner, older, retiring soon, has years of experience, good partner, wise, gives good advice, good balance to Eve, shares his wisdom with Eve, will be missed when he does retire but have a feeling that he will be involved in future books in one way or another.
* The writing, plot, pace, and place of the story
* Knowing that though there are corrupt cops there are also a few that are not and will have Eve’s back
* Getting to see the politicking and interaction of the various members involved with Eve.
* That no stone was left unturned in the pursuit of closing cases
* That both cases were resolved though there were a few red herrings
* That the civilian bad guys were unearthed and dealt with one way or another
* That it was believable
* Being able to see some of the locations having been grown up in Los Angeles
* Wondering what will happen next in this series related to Eve’s job, the law suit, her house, her private life, her family, the TV show, etc ~

What I didn’t like:
* The criminals and their crimes
* Knowing that there are police and politicians more interested in their future(s) than in the jobs they are supposed to be doing

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Definitely

Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the ARC – this is my honest review.

One in a series but good as a stand alone we have our female Chief Detective facing as usual the barrage of
bad feeling from her colleagues with just a few supporting her work. Her success is the cause for the antagonism,
never mind that she almost died in the case and the fact that the last case is going to be cast into a TV
series has not won her any followers amongst her fellow workers.

When a series of robberies takes place in gated communities with so called security guards and plenty of
preventive measures in place Eve follows up on the latest robbery. A trail which leaves the three robbers dead
all not caused by her own hand, anyway gets her the notoriety she hates and which her boss is going to use to his
best advantage for the advancement of his own political career. Uncovering a racket which seems to go beyond just
three youngsters on a stealing spree, a murder of a woman and a baby is uncovered which adds to the complications
in the story.

The story is fast paced, and an eye opener on how easy it is to get into even a gated community when the community
itself becomes lax on security and warnings. Everyone gets very settled into an easy pace and then the trouble begins.

I haven't read other books in this series, but I don't think that's necessary to enjoy Gated Prey. Eve Ronin, the main character, is whip-smart and takes no guff from anyone. The story pacing was excellent. Goldberg's use of dialogue was great. This was a high speed crime novel and reads like one. I really enjoyed it and will be on the lookout for more from Goldberg in the future.

Lee Goldberg does it again! Another great Eve Ronin story. I love this kick-ass strong female protagonist.

Lee Goldberg’s ‘Gated Prey’ is a tightly written police procedural featuring earnest young detective Eve Ronin, and her soon to be retiring partner Duncan Pavone. The partners are undercover investigating a spate of home invasions in

Eve is tenacious, ambitious and doesn’t suffer fools, particularly with her other colleagues and superiors. She still has a lot to learn about being a detective, having been promoted as part of a publicity stunt by her captain after she went viral on social media. Having previously uncovered corrupt colleagues, she has very little friends in her team, one of whom includes Duncan.

This is the third Ronin book, and it’s clear Lee Goldberg’s background as a TV writer and producer are utilised well. Not only for the content (Eve’s life is being made into a TV show), but also in this book. Goldberg has some sharp and witty dialogue, and he also manages to not overdo descriptions of places. Calabasas California is another character in this book and he makes me feel like I am there stuck in LA freeways driving around these exclusive neighbourhoods without boring me,

The strength of this book is the relationship between the two partners, with Duncan trying to get Eve to play politics better and impart his wisdom before he retires. I also like that Eve is new and is still learning. I hope as this series continues we see those detective skills improving.

Gated Prey is a solid, fun and riveting thrill ride. Eve Ronin is a treat to read. I am looking forward to reading what happens to her next. I also hope Goldberg does turn this into a TV series (perhaps the fictional Eve Ronin a Tv series within a book).

Thank you to Thomas & Merced and NetGalley.

What starts out to be a fairly simple sting operation, designed to catch burglars who are targeting luxury mansions in LA county, turns into a much more convoluted crime that engulfs detective Eve Ronin and her nearly-retired partner, Duncan Pavone. With the body count rising, Eve and Duncan are in high gear, trying to determine why the trap failed. Is there someone else behind the home invasions and is there more than meets the eye behind the gates of these luxurious communities?

Gated Prey is the third book in the Eve Ronin series by Lee Goldberg. And, once again, Mr Goldberg has served up an entertaining story that moves quickly and provides several unexpected twists. The dialogue is witty, the action fast-paced, and the storyline is well-plotted. I enjoy the relationship between Eve and her partner and, all in all, Gated Prey is a well-done police procedural.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a copy of this book for review.

This is another exciting story in Eve Ronin's detective career before Duncan retires. There's a dark story line but it's not the main investigation. (Check content warnings in other reviews if that's an issue for you.) The author is a TV writer/producer, so Gated Prey moves along at a great pace and predictably, reads somewhat like a script. I'll be over here waiting for the next book.

Gated Prey by Lee Goldberg.
A police procedural thriller with a young, brash, female deputy and her older more laid back partner. What’s not to like? This is book three in the Eve Ronin series but easily read as a standalone. Lots of action including a car chase with an Escalade and a Rolls Royce, an explosion and a fire and more than one shoot out. The author is also a TV writer and this book has a TV movie quality to it. That is not a complaint because I found it entertaining. However, it was easy to foresee the twist at the end.
For me it was not my usual read but good for a change of pace. I might go back and read the first two books at some point.

Gated Prey is the third book in the Eve Ronin series. Eve is back on the job after the craziness that was the second book. I enjoy Eve as a hard nosed character but she also comes off as really harsh as she wants to be respected but is not going about getting the respect in the right ways. Duncan is still one of my favorite characters and a perfect partner. This story is fast paced and will keep you turning the pages to see how it ends.

Thank you to NetGalley, Lee Goldberg, and Thomas & Mercer for providing me with an ARC of this book.

I have enjoyed other works by Lee Goldberg and was excited to get a copy of the latest in the Eve Ronin series. It was a quick and fun read. The plot moves quickly and has a good balance of heart and humor.

Gated communities supposedly keep people safe inside their gates, or are they to keep the evil from spilling outside? This concept, without any doubt, has also been through the writer's mind as it's also mentioned in the story. Gated Prey has a surprisingly well-written plot, with two main characters that are opposite in almost every aspect but the search for the truth. Eve is torn between continuing to work as a detective or selling the rights of her life as a police officer for a tv series. Duncan can hardly wait for his term in law enforcement to finish and go into retirement. In spite of the different stages in life, they believe in pursuing the truth, finding the culprits, and bringing them to justice. Where they also differ is that Duncan already knows how to handle personal and professional lives whilst Eve, if she doesn't learn fast, will soon have a breakdown. They have to untangle the disappearance of a pregnant woman, a series of robberies in high-priced condos, and a case of a dead-born baby. There are so many twists and turns in the story until the crimes are solved that leaders in the Police are changed, a lawsuit is settled whilst other is left open, and a very unexpected ending surfaces. Everything is well-timed, well-written, and very entertaining!
I downloaded a free copy of this book through NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.

“The problem with all of her mental notes was they somehow got erased the moment she made them.” Gated Prey by Lee Goldberg

Boy, does this quote resemble me!

3.5 stars. I enjoyed this installment of Eve Ronin series. Much more than the previous book.

Eve is still the same, and her troubles are piling.l up. Plus there’s the mystery of the home invasions still. That mystery fekt lighter than the previous book, but I don’t know. I like this better. Sad to say the archeologist isn’t around anymore. But Duncan is! I’m half afraid he’ll be killed before his retirement. Really enjoy this odd couple.

The book feels lighter than book 2, but no less gritty (can it be light and gritty?) and tense and has shoot-outs and a few twists to make you go huh.

Thank you Thomas and Mercer and NetGalley for the arc. This was fun to read.
