A fast-paced, quick-witted police procedural that is light on character development and on substance which makes it good for a few hours of mindless distraction, but not much more since the author never really moves beyond the stereotypic representation of a young hardworking female cop (the book's protagonist) who. is hated by a clique of corrupt officers. So while this book is entertaining, it is not something that the reader will remember more than 5 minutes after putting it down, as there is really nothing to dig your teeth into.
I would like to thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

This book had some enticing action, but was a slow read otherwise, with some content that can only be described as filler. If this book wasn't as slowly-paced out, it would have been a much better read.

Eve Ronin is back on her next case - with his "on the door of retirement" partner, Duncan Pavone. This time they go undercover to catch the people behind a sting of robberies inside exclusive gated communities at Calabasas. Only things go a little sideways and ends up with three dead bodies. Eve feels that there are more to the case, including who is the actual leader and how they are easily come and go inside the community.
My opinion of this one is a little divided... on the mystery/police-procedural case, yes, I loved it. I admire Eve's tenacity to keep working because definitely, the case is not over with all the robbers dead. I am happy with the twists and turns that brings readers to the conclusion. On top of that, the author adds another case in the middle and it shows that Eve's way of thinking helps from a different perspective to solve it.
What makes me concern and weary, and rather disrupts my enjoyment is, well, the situation that Eve is facing. I don't know if I want Eve to change? But she definitely doesn't make friends in the department. She challenges things, and brings down another power player.
On one hand, I think it shows that inside a police department things can be very toxic. But on the other hand, it makes the series will always be Eve vs. Everybody else (except for Duncan, who keeps saying that he will leave within three months anyway). It's quite tiresome especially it's book #3 already.
I'm still rounding it up to my 4-stars category. But I hope the author makes a new progress with Eve and her colleagues. Or one day, Eve really will just be either fired or dead because nobody within the police force is willing to help her out of resentment.

I'm new to Goldberg's books and I have quickly gotten hooked on this series. Quick pace, strong characters, and a nice balance between Eve and Duncan. Although I saw a couple of the twists coming, it was nothing that took away from the suspense and there were plenty of plot revelations/twists that I didn't guess. I will continue to read further books in the Eve Ronin series as well as look into some of Goldberg's other books.

Detective Eve Ronin is back! Eve and her soon-to-be-retired father-figure partner Duncan investigate a burglary ring in a ritzy Los Angeles neighborhood and a gruesome fetal abduction case in the same development. Eve is still considered a rookie who doesn’t deserve to be where she is in the department, but she continues to prove herself by putting all the pieces together on her own by following her gut instincts and natural talents despite what everyone else might think.
Lee Goldberg has worked on many tv shows, including Murder, She Wrote and Monk, so his books tend to play out like a TV show, which I personally enjoy a lot. The story is fast-paced, the dialog is funny, and the characters are relatable. Looking forward to Book 4!
Thank you, @netgalley, @amazonpublishing, and @leegoldberg007 for an advance copy of this book! This book will be released on October 26, 2021.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / Gated Prey (Eve Ronin Book 3) by Lee Goldberg / Pages: 268 / Genre: Mysteries & Thrillers / Release Date: Oct. 26, 2021

Thanks to NetGalley for an advance copy of this book.
Interesting premise, burglars targeting homeowners in gated communities, with a side story about fetal infanticide. It was a bit difficult to see a connection between the two stories, but the shocking twist towards the end tied it all together.
Another reviewer on Goodreads lamented the author’s rehashing of things that happened in the previous two stories, but as one who did not read those stories, I appreciated that detail.
Downsides in the book were the preponderance of references to food, especially with regard to the character Duncan Pavone, and the references to Eve’s provocative clothing early in the story, but the strength of the overall plot made up for it.

I didn't realize that Gated Prey was one of a series of books until I finished it. It works well as a stand-alone read but for fans of the heroine, it will be an exciting addition to the exploits of the talented female detective, Eve. Eve encounters home invasions in a gated community in upper-class communities in this latest installment. Her soon-to-be-retired partner joins her as they become entangled in all the twists and turns that will help solve this mystery. In addition, while working to solve these crimes the two investigate the death of a newborn in the same community and add it to the crimes they are working on. How the heroine untangles the mysteries of the wealthy and the crimes they are surrounded by makes for an entertaining read. There is no doubt that Eve is a natural at her job and at solving mysteries, just not at relating to other cops in her town. Thanks to #NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review #GatedPrey#NetGalley.

Great installment in the Eve Ronin series. This is book 3, and likely my favorite so far. This book was very fast paced. I finished it in a day, and am already anxious for the next one! Eve is definitely going through some things in this one in terms of various consequences from previous situations, including physical and mental health, money, and her own experience. The relationship she has with Duncan is a huge shining light in this series, and the mentor ship he provides is so fun to read - keep drawing his retirement out! The plot was interesting if a little heavy. I like the various other characters and relationships, especially the people Eve can actually count on. Highly recommend for a fast, satisfying read.

Gated Prey by Lee Goldberg Fast paced, page turner with reliable characters and a twist in solving of both of the crimes. Like watching a favorite TV series, Eve and Duncan are working better as a team. Duncan's off the wall the comments lighten the tension with a dose of humor. Eve just keeps going and going until the crimes are solved. Can't wait to see what is in store for Eve and Duncan next.
Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for the opportunity to preview the book.

This series is a guilty little pleasure of mine. Lee Goldberg knows how to spin a good yarn, and the latest Eve Ronin is no exception. Eve is still battling for acceptance after her meteoric promotion to homocide detective in the LASD, and still hasn’t learned to play nice to make friends., which explains her latest predicament. Great whirlwind of a story that will keep you hooked from beginning to end.
Thanks to Thomas & Mercer to access to a digital ARC via NetGalley.

Eve Ronin is trying to solve a series of break-ins that have been happening in neighboring wealthy communities.
But the case quickly spirals out of control, with car chases, and unexpected deaths. Meanwhile, Eve's quick promotion to detective is causing resentment from her already sexist co-workers. A great action packed read that will leave you wanting to know what comes next in the Eve Ronin series.

Thanks to netgalley for an advanced copy. Another great book in the Eve Ronin series. I had read first 2 books just prior to this one, so was happy to be able to read them all in order back to back. I have really become invested in the characters, especially Duncan, and love how they develop by this third book. I also enjoy the book gets right to the point and jumps in. I will continue to read this author, and hope for another Ronin book soon!

Detective Eve Ronin is working an undercover operation with her partner Duncan Pavone to catch a string of home invasion robberies. But, they both are nearly shot when no back-up arrives. Is it a real mistake, or is it payback for what Eve has done in the past to uncover corrupt police officers? While tying up loose ends, they also catch another gruesome case of murder. Duncan is counting his days to retirement, and Eve is trying to decide if there are any police officers she can trust to have her back when Duncan is gone.

This is a great series tends to builds a thrilling visual striking climax. This has suspense and drama are guaranteed to keep a reader spellbound. This also has a energetic resourceful procedural starring a heroine who deserves a series of her own.

A simple sting operation takes a violent and unexpected turn for Detective Eve Ronin and her soon-to-retire partner, Duncan. They will not be getting much help from the powers that be in this story based on previous incidents. I highly recommend reading this series in order. This is the 3rd in the Eve Ronin series and it keeps getting better with each outing. Tightly plotted, interesting characters and amazing dialog. I can't wait for #4! Thank you NetGalley for the advanced readers copy for review.

I decided to read this book because I had already read the first two in the series. I hoped it would be more like book one, which was exciting and focused more on the case than on Eve's continuing battle with her colleagues in the sheriff's department. However, I was disappointed that it was more like book two. Instead of diving deep into the case, which involves a series of robberies in gated communities, the book insists on reminding the reader of how much Eve is despised by her co-workers because of events that occurred in the previous book. I just couldn't take it after a while. There is an interesting twist in the actual case near the end of the book but the rest of the story is overshadowed by the Eve versus the department storyline. I would not recommend this book. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.

A simple sting operation takes a violent and unexpected turn for Detective Eve Ronin in a gripping thriller by #1 New York Times bestselling author Lee Goldberg.
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s detective Eve Ronin and her soon-to-retire partner, Duncan Pavone, are running a 24-7 sting in a guard-gated enclave of palatial homes in Calabasas. Their luxury McMansion is a honey trap, set to lure in the violent home invaders terrorizing the community. The trap works, leaving three intruders dead, a body count that nearly includes Eve and Duncan.
Eve’s bosses are eager to declare the case closed, but there are too many unanswered questions for her to let go. Was the trap actually for her, bloody payback for Eve’s very public takedown of a clique of corrupt deputies? Or is there an even deadlier secret lurking behind those opulent gates? Eve’s refusal to back down and her relentless quest for the truth makes her both the hunter…and the prey.
Such a funny book. What fun Eve and Duncan are. Always trying to do the right thing, yet somehow things are not working. Duncan is to retire in two weeks if he makes it. I guess, this book is a series and even without knowing the before was fun,

I've just finished reading the aptly named Gated Prey by Lee Goldberg, the 3rd in the Eve Ronin series. Thanks to Netgalley for the advance digital copy. This is my honest review.
Each in the series has enough background info included to allow for stand alone reading, but why would you?
This time Eve, and her soon to be retired partner, Duncan, is undercover to catch a gang of home invaders. while continuing to be resented & undermined by fellow officers. The suspense builds as Eve investigates the death of a newborn baby in the same gated community.
The "Hollywood" atmosphere continues in the Calabasas, CA setting outside LA. This installment was even better with both new and old supporting cast, familiar family drama, politics within the Sheriffs department, and plenty of fast paced detective work. This series is easy to read & has humor while still addressing current issues. Eve is a strong, driven female detective & I hope there will be 4th book.

Gated Prey by Lee Goldberg is the third entry in his Eve Ronin series, featuring a detective in the LA County Sheriff’s Office who lives and works in the area of Calabasas, CA. The location is important in these novels as the author sets up the place and attitude (think “Hollywood” types and money) that are as integral to law enforcement’s job, as enforcing said laws.
In this book Eve is involved in a couple of circumstances, which at the outset have little to do with one another except that they occur within a gated community. The first has her, and her soon to retire partner, Duncan, going under cover to capture a home invasion team. The second involves the apparent premature death of a still born child in another home.
Power differentials continue to be a part of this novel; Eve as a female is only one of these. In the first book of the series, she began a reputation due to being caught on camera in a heroic act. She now has an agent, and Hollywood is beckoning her to become involved in a project written around her story. These all help to bring tension to the story and help to illustrate her love of her law enforcement career, as she continues to do her job, with tenacity, despite the figurative siren call to leave.
Though I liked this installment very much; as the other Eve Ronin’s books this one satisfies with twists, surprises, and fulfilling conclusion, this one might be challenging as a first read in the series, as events from the previous novel carry over into this one. Regardless, whether you read the books in order, or not, I expect if you love mysteries and police procedurals (or Goldberg’s other books) you will enjoy Gated Prey.

I thoroughly enjoyed this latest Eve Ronin novel. She’s an impassioned yet practical heroine who’s very easy to root for. I loved the way the two main plots interconnected, and the ultimate bad guy was a total surprise to me, in a good way. A very fresh twist. I read this in two days and got totally wrapped up in it!
